I'm sure I'll make it out to watch a couple of your races again this year Pete, and with any luck, I might be in a few too.
Once the mk 3 is up to scratch, hopefully I'll hit a few winton fridays, and hopefully make it to a sprint or two towards the end of the year. (either PI or Sandown, or both maybe)

Oh, and you'll have to be there too woody, so I can copy your lines!

Good thread, I definitely want to try out Winton or PI at some point later in the year.
Hitting Sandown for the first time in the R on Thursday as an instructor/education type day which should be good fun!
Winton is awesome Dave, you must try it ASAP :D Sandown in comparison is majorly boring! You have to think about late apex's and a double apex, you have to be much more proggresive on the brake pedal in some points also... more gentle inputs required when on the limit due to the technical layout, love it :D

Wait until you get to the Island, Adzy - it's raises the bar to a whole other level :)
Another event is the 2011 Alfa Club Winton 6 hr on 15 and 16 October 2011.
One day, I'd love to put a 6 hour team together with a hotted up PD Polo. Given that my (fairly stock) Polo used under 12l/100km at the recent Winton track day, despite my best efforts to flog it, it'd be a pretty good endurance racer due to the smaller number of pit stops vs a (obviously faster) petrol engined car.

Sorry you are correct ill be there in the 9th for the circuit day.
Id rather pay less and get more track time on the Saturday then get timed on the Sunday with less laps and more ego's...
Sweet. I better suss out my cash situation

It's only $10 more for the Sunday and you can tell how your lines are working with timing. But you can do that too if get someone to come along and take times.
Some of us will be going up to Winton on the 10th to run the 2nd round of the Victorian SuperSprint Championship (and stroke our egos :P)

If ya want seat time which m sure most of your do Saturday is hard to beat. Its relaxed yet professional, heaps of seat time and well run.
SaturdayHas been allotted as a circuit familiarisation/driver training day where advice from racing drivers will be available for
those who require it, or competitors may go out an learn the circuit on their own. Competitors will be allowed a
substantial time on the track (We would expect approximately 1 hour of track time in the form of a number of 15-30
minute sessions). The entry fee for Saturday is $190.00 (Entries before 04/07/11 $170.00).

Adzy, Winton is on the to go list, but I still haven't decided what to do my front rotors (another set of OEM's, DBA's etc). Chasing prices and getting feedback but so far another set of OEM rotors looks like the best option along with a modification of my right foot and brain!
Will leave PI until I've got a few more days under my belt. Sandown is convenient given the location though so I can see myself being there a couple times a year without question.
It's a shame that this area of the forum isn't so much busier. These cars are fantastic fun out on the track and I'm with the others, avoiding the timed days to just get out there enjoy yourself with no ego pressure is a great day out.

IMO it would be a better option to go a DBA Street or 4000 series slotted rotor as they are made from a stiffer steel than the OEM's and the slots help with clearing hot gasses and dust etc. the ventilation is also more efficient than OEM and price almost the same ;D but up to you.
It is a shame but hopefully I will be atending many more events going forward and Dave, you cant go wrong with a Golf R as when you get into trouble the car drives itself :emo_baghead:

Yeah I'm doing plenty of reading and research at the moment. Getting a lot of mixed info but I think I'll take a punt on the 4000's as they appear to be the same cost as the OEMs almost.

LOL that would be awesome! I'd buy a 10 pack for sure.
Just waiting on some pricing to come back for the DBA/Ferrodo combo. Debating about whether or not I pull the trigger on the H&R sways and W-ALK now or leave it as is for a bit. Should fix my hack driving style before trying to change the car!
You know you want to pull that trigger... they are great mods and you will only enjoy your driving so much more

Anyway not looking good for Winton on the 10th though, ordered my rotors/pads last night but don't expect to have them for at least 2 weeks then need to find time to fit them :(
Where you getting brake fade at Sandown?

Where you getting brake fade at Sandown?
No they worked pretty good until the later part of the day once I'd put way too much heat through the rotors and developed a lovely vibration. I know they don't "warp" but whatever they do technically, they were farked. Had to have them machined 3 times to get an even surface to stop the vibration. Have a lovely squeal when braking slowly in traffic now.
The dust covers behind the rotors will get removed when the new ones go on and my braking/driving method will be altered slightly.

I have the same thing after Winton but only slight. I notice a tiny vibration when braking now due to the punishment the new discs and pads received, I bedded them in properly as well... guess it's expected when tracking the daily driver :glasses:

My front rotors are pretty scoured but they're still straight so I'm going to leave them until after the July Winton day (they may be rather more beaten up with the extra grip from the semi-slicks).

Getting a piece made up to hold the fire extinguisher in front of the passenger seat using the seat rail bolts but have to go buy the fire extinguisher first. I know it needs to use a metal bracket but Supercheap has 750g and 1kg ones.

Yeah, it's on my list of things to do. There's a lot of the info already in my wreck to race thread where I was getting heaps of questions on the subject.
Just need to pull it all together when I've got a minute.
Everything is in here CAMS Online Manual of Motor Sport (http://www.camsmanual.com.au/) but it can be a bit confusing to the uninitiated.

Thanks for putting up the pics, Pete - they really highlight the loving care that I take of my car :P
living up to his name and shredding up a new advan
No damage to car or driver thankfully. Not sure what caused it. Greg can tell the rest of the story.
The tyre (only the driver's side front) developed a slow leak somewhere between turn 1 and GIO as I 1st noticed the front end pushing a bit through GIO, so I missed the apex by a couple of feet.
At Siberia, it pushed more (missed the apex again) and seemed to spin up a bit on exit with a bit of vibration through the steering wheel.
Up over Lukey heights, the understeer got really bad and the vibration was quite noticable as I crested the hill.
Out of MG, I deliberately pointed the car more than usual and clipped the apex fairly hard at turn 11 to try and fight the understeer - at this stage the vibration was getting pretty bad and the car still understeered on to the rumble strip on the exit.
On turn in into turn 12, the vibration was blurring my vision and at the apex, it felt like the wheel was about to fall off.
Fearing the worst, I backed right off down the straight and noticed some smoke coming from the driver front wheel arch area. The steering wheel was still vibrating badly and the car was now pulling to right so I pulled off just after the pit exit.
All in all, a destroyed tyre was a relief vs what I though it might have been. 2:30 wasn't too bad a lap time in retrospect.
I think I need new headers! The back firing's getting worse!
Definitely - it went from sounding like a 22 to a shotgun as the day went on!

What's stopping you, Adzy? You were putting down awesome lap times up at Winton.
Final 2011 VSSC results are in.
Funny how the VSSC site never got the 3rd round entry form out let alone the Round 3 and overall series results.
I could claim to be 2nd in class for the series since 3 of us were tied on equal points (only a Porsche turned up for more than one round in this class). Or I could be listed as 4th (me being ranked in front of Phil Buggee is just preposterous).

It's $190.
You need to be a member of a car club (Club Audi Vic for me) and have a CAMS L2S.
Yeah, timing gear is all included from Natsoft.
Would be nice to have some other VAG cars out there.

Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (http://www.piarc.com.au/)
If the weather's good I'll be trying to crack the 2 minute barrier. Previous best is 2:04
I've got some work to do though. The manifold hasn't come back from the platers yet and the carbs have to be re fitted when it does.

sort out a fire extinguisher. How did you mount yours Greg?
I have a piece of 3mm x 25mm aluminium strip under my passenger seat rails, bolted through the front mounts. It is bent so that the seat movement and underseat drawer is not blocked. It also has 2 6mm holes drilled in it and these are where I bolt a 90 degree extrusion of aluminium which has the fire extinguisher mount screwed on to it.
It's much simpler to show you than to describe (I haven't taken any decent pics of it but here is a crappy one).

If you're breaking in a set of semi-slicks, have a THOROUGH look over them for any objects you may have picked up on the drive down when you get to the track (like jack the car up and spin the wheels while checking the tread). You don't want to trash a brand new tyre like I did (see page 8 of this thread)
