AUSmotive.com » Audi officially confirms quattro for A1 (http://www.ausmotive.com/2011/01/10/audi-officially-confirms-quattro-for-a1.html)

How long before VW slips the AWD drivetrain under a Polo and creates a Polo R?

Based on the popularity of the Polo GTI it certainly has to be on the cards.

That thing will be a great car to drive. So light and AWD. Awesome combo.

The A1 is already overpriced.... So adding a 'sport' version will only make it less appealing IMO.

If only they could make it not look like an A1. Weird german interpretation of a Fiat 500 IMO.

Polo looks incredibly good for a car its size.
If a Polo R comes along, I'd honestly look at moving out of my MKV GTI Pirelli.

Have you tested the new Polo GTI yet Martin?
I wasn't impressed esp coming from a Pirelli - I was quite disappointed actually. I felt detached from the driving experience. Maybe the R will be different animal.

LOL... and where did putting names down early get people with the Polo GTI? Nowhere ;)

It's true....

I put my name down in September. Ordered on 27 November and VGA don't think I'll get my Polo GTI in 2011. Blless them

Last we heard it had been canned, but that was last May before the A1 quattro had been confirmed: http://www.polodriver.com/polo-2009/it%E2%80%99s-official-volkswagen-quells-the-latest-polo-r-rumours/

And that was VW UK, too, who told me face-to-face that an R wasn't coming, and that the Golf would be the smallest R model, but with the Polo GTI gaining popularity, who knows?

ive decided to hold off on the polo GTI, for 2 reasons, im not keen on the wait, and if the polo R comes out and i bought the gti i would be kicking myself, this is based off the differences ive felt from drives in both the mk6 gti and golf R

So we're getting a heavier, pricier AWD Polo now. A 1,400 kg Polo R/S1, how awesome is that!
Sorry but I can't see the point of it. Just as I can't see the point of the R, a GTI that pilled up 200 kg only because it is spinning its rear wheels. Loved the R32 and all V6 Golfs though, they had soul and charisma...

Where did you pull 200kg from?

On an Audi A4 there looks to be a 60kg penalty

I'm not too sure, but the math probably went something like 1500 - 1300 for the Golfs.

Wait, let me get the calculator.

About 100kg from Golf GTI to R

The sunroof and NAV were not available in the first shipment, in fact there are still no sunroof cars in the Oz!

Where's the sunroof?

My sunroof is in the back streets of China town, with a roll of 3M Duct tape and a coping saw.

I thought VW have said that they're not building the Polo R. The AWD/Quattro system will be too expensive and profit margin for this car will be petite! Plus the pologti is targeted towards younger buyers.

Look at the Audi A1, starts from $29k ish, with sat-nav,leather,chrome here and there, it will reach $50k in no time! who would want to buy a $50k Polo R? when you can get the Golf R for a few grand more....

Your logic is weird? Why are you using Audi option pricing, applying every option under the sun then saying that will be the price of a Polo R? Whats the difference in price between a Golf GTI and a Golf R? 10K? Apply that to a Polo and you would get a Polo R thats less that 40K. Remember that all the crap you added to an Audi A1 price is optional on a Golf R!

Audi A1 quattro (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/firstdrives/262135/audi_a1_quattro.html)

Here they have a drive of a quattro A1

and they seem to think the S1 will have a 1.6 turbo engine with 160kw+

I heard too that the engine will be a 1.6 turbo.

It's interesting that WRC cars are now 1.6 turbo and AWD just like the S1 and Polo R!!!

It looks as though Audi and VW have a few rallies on their agenda in the coming years. The Touareg has trounced the opposition in the dakar so amybe VW might turn it's attention on rallying cars in other competitions?
