Hi Guys,

First time blogger! Just purchased a new VW Polo GTI late last year which I'm hoping to get my April (if the dealers keep there word), but I'm not the biggest fan of the 17' rims which are stock with the car. As my car is candy white and will have the black sunroof, I think the 18' detriot rims which are an option for the Golf GTI would look awesome on the car! Is anyone aware as to whether this is possible or whether there are any issues surrounding this change? Also, does anyone have photos of this being done as I wouldn't mind seeing what it looks like before I do it.

The Golf has a PCD of 5x112 whereas the Polo is 5x100 so the VW original Detroits won't fit.

Until and unless someone comes up with a replica with a 5x100 PCD I'd start looking at other options but maybe call Tempe Tyres (http://www.tempetyres.com.au/products_closeup.asp?part=&part_no=2295) to see what they have to say about the linked wheels.

Maybe have a look at getting a custom spray job on your stock wheels, or vinyl cutouts to turn your denvers into "detroits".

If you go cheap, the wheels will be heavy. Good wheels from the US are the way to go, but be prepared to spend a little more. You also want to get the wheel offset and width spot on to get the best handling and looks. Fitment is the same as last Polo, mk4 Golf, mk3 vr6, mk1 Audi TT, mk1 A3/S3.

In europe the 17 inch Detroits are a factory option on the Polo GTI. Pity they aren't available here

I think I may go down the path of painting the stock wheels to be similar to the detroits. Would be awesome if i could find 17' detroits though....

Hmm, I thought the new Polo was 5x112... Has someone got the exact GTI wheel specs?

alias_vw

They're definitely 17x7" PCD 5x100 and I believe the offset is ET38 (but haven't found 100% confirmation of the offset as yet).

Bugger, that reduces the wheel options significantly - no picking up a set of cheap Golf/A3 rims!

I just saw on the Tempe Tyres website that they have the detriot style rims in stock. May be a possibility of drilling the rims to be the same size as the polo gti?

Be aware of the wheel weights with copy rims. Weights do make a difference, my old rims were 25 pounds each, new ones are 16.5 each. Acceleration and handling are adversely affected by heavy rims...

Is there a way of finding out the weight of the stock 17 inch rims for the GTI? As this may now influence my decision.....

shauno

They should be close to the Golf Denvers - same size and width, even if the PCD and offset are different.

I have to say i was under the impression that the new pogo GTI was 5x112 as well....

I agree, you don't want to hinder your new Polo GTI's performance because of appearance.

Well I've tracked down the good oil on the various 'stock' wheel options for the 6r Polo;

15" Lakeside 15x6, PCD 5x100, ET40
17" Boavista 17x7, PCD 5x100, ET46
17" Denver 17x7, PCD 5x100, ET46

After a month of research and trying to see what detroits would look like on a Polo GTI, i found this:

YouTube - VW Polo GTI - En direct du salon de Genève 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfAo-hec2Cw&feature=fvsr)

Now i need to see where i can buy them!

New Zealanders have the option of Detroits on their Polo GTIs, see Volkswagen NZ website. Why the hell didn't we get them here???????

Does anyone know if we can even import the 17" Detroits from New Zealand? I have had no response emailing VG NZ and a couple of their dealers:(

Let us know how you go. I enquired about getting the Denvers, alloyed and painted, to look like Detroits, guy said not very likely as it would involve too much work and therefore expensive. Told me to try to source the OEM wheels...well derrrrr;)

Sorry to raise an old thread, but has anyone been able to source the OEM 17" Detroits which were allegedly available in NZ and Germany? If so how did you get them?

I walked into the parts department for Brisbane VW (Somewhere near the Fortitude Valley?, I'm from TAS) and the bloke in there said he can order 17" Detroits for the Polo GTI for $580 a corner (They're usually $800).

---------- Post added at 06:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:58 PM ----------

So as far as I know, its possible for 17"s

Crikey that's more than my Rays wheels cost me.

They are in NZ too, that sucks (ex Kiwi) how the heck does that work, do they haggle a better deal with VAG to start with?
We would have jumped at the detroits especially as we missed out on these on the Golf :(

Opps, should have read further down as GTI Joe has already mentioned this, sorry.

BUT, here's a thought.....hubby's brother inlaw is a car salesman and works in the same building as a VW dealership in NZ, so we
will send him an email and get him to ask......
Can you guys help me out though with exactly what info to ask please as I don't want to bug him with too many emails

Why get them from NZ?

The guy I spoke to said that every VW parts dealer in the country should be able to source 17" Detroits... They were right on his system...

i saw a white polo GTI in the city yesterday parked with detroits. Not sure of size - must be 17s based on the discussion here. Took a photo - not sure how to post it up?

You need photbucket or something similar.

They could be knock-offs, home-made or special imports.

So I bit the bullet and opted to have my denver rims painted to match the 18" detroits, and I'm quite happy with how they've turned out!

Admittedly was expensive $160+ gst per rim, but cheaper than buying new ones/importing them.

Alliance Rim Repairs in Malaga, WA did the job and very satisfied customer here!

Sorry for the late reply bud, overseas at the moment. The whole rim was painted including the whole face I believe.

But very happy with the job, I can recommend Alliance Rim repair for sure!

I went to Alliance Rim Repair on Saturday and Mark showed me one that he's working on (machine + painting black). Looks really great and he quoted me for $220 per rim including gst. When did you get yours done?

Perthies might like to chat with Bob at Perth Wheel Repair. After he was recommended to me, I used him recently to repair a couple of rims, and his price and service was excellent. He subs the painting out to a pro, so it was top notch.
