i put a new engine in my '77, 4 door golf, but i couldnt put the emission control on there because one of the plugs wouldnt come out. so we left it out.
does this matter when i go to get my roadworthy?

Leave it all off and make it look as if it were never there. It would be a severe tester that picked you up on that in a 30 year old car. At least in NSW.

Well...if anyone ever got Milo cranked before it hit the casket, you would have realised his grunt.

After i changed the box and clutch (even before) it genuinely hammered!

Hard to keep grip on him, much nicer when i had the 225's on the front, original MK (hmm...forgive my innocence) - actually they werent MKII GTI rims...i cant remember, anyway...it had some extreme pull when it was in its full pieces. Didnt last long...someone tried to put it through a school yard after a wee bit too much chit chat with Mr James Beam. (oh...and "I" dont drink bourbon...)

All 1600 Golfs hammered. in the Uk we had 1L, 1.1 and 1.3L ones. I had a few 1300s which went ok. But 1.6 is best for power to weight ation. i`ve still got Milos motor and box here. A bit of no licence going around i`ve heard.

it was my bad.. i got bored one night waiting for raoul to come back from a concert.. i decided to kill time by demolishing half a bottle of jimbeam to myself in about 2 hours... decided to go for a "spin around the block" in milo, then jim took over and started going around other streets instead of the block i lived in at the time. (mind you, luckly iit was late, and quiet streets). anyway.. i think jim stopped driving at one stage, by that stage.. i had fallen asleep. i would seem that i had sailed straight down a street and attempted to turn a corner. instead, i jumped up onto a gutter and missed a fence by about a metre(the fence was about 2 metres from the gutter). when i came too(impact). i had realised what had happened and got worried. 1. drink driving. 2. no licence. 3. in bad part of neighbourhood where many "islanders" live. 4. the car wouldnt start. 5. when i pushed the car off the gutter, i noticed the wheel and rim was well busted. 6. the steering wheel was goin mental like i was driving on the dunes(the car was smooth tho). i locked the car and ran home.. waited for raoul and co to come home and we towed it back with a bit of rope and a bigarse ute..

and there you have it folks, the tales of the drunk, unlicenced driver :)

Towbars are a pest, as you cant remove unless you also have the brackets which were removed to fit the towbar. It makes jacking up the car at the back easy though!

Yes i fitted the rallye/syncro floor pan with rear diff etc. Quite a bit of work but well worth it. Will be fitting a vr6 24v turbo in soon. Will be back in uk in a few weeks so will send it off over here.
I will be in Ireland myself in a month or so. Got some work to do in a town called Youghal,Co Cork.

Nope. Was lucky. Bought it 5 years ago with 90000miles on it. Put a lot of effort into getting it straight and shiny. It was a good base to start with though. Third owner. Dont think I will sell it. Too good. Retire it when I get a MkV GTI.
Thanks for the compliment. The car will be in the Volkswagen magazine for Australia as part of their publicity for the MkV. You wont get it in UK, though.

Mine is a Mk2 GTi with G-Max suspension, Powerflex bushes, K-Mac camber kit, strut braces, Zimmerman X-drilled discs, goodridge hoses, 15 x 7 Zenders wheels with Yokohama A032R Tyres. The Motor is stock GTi at the moment but not for too much longer. The car handles really well but is in serious need of some grunt!

I have a few ideas: 1, Supercharge the 8V motor, 2, Convert to 16V 3, Convert to Mk4 TDi. I would like to race it in Improved Production in the Vic State Race Series if I can get it to go fast enough. Supercharging is probably my cheapest option but the 16V could be kept in an under 2 litre class. Diesel would be great because I don't think anyone races a diesel in Australia and a front wheel drive diesel car would make a change from the Nissans and RX-7s! It would be expensive though unless I can find a motor at reasonable cost.

Just out of interest I have a data logger in the car and I ran it at Philip Island. For those who know the circuit I was exiting turn 12 onto the main straight at 145kph and going through turn 1 at 5100rpm in 5th which is about 165. The poor thing just struggles for top end speed but with more power it will fly!

It went really well in the end, but took ages to get the sort of performance I was after. Mainly because the people doing it had no experience with VWs.

The Mk1 has a similar ABF engine spec ready, minus the throttle bodies. I'd gathered a few bits to turbo it, but can't afford it yet by the time I factor in big radiators etc etc etc

alex g
15-08-2005, 05:32 PM
forget the turbo and go for the old school throttle bodies no engine suits a mk1 better than a 16v on dual carbies or bodies in my opinion

gave it to a mate to use for roo shooting on a farm, that was about 2 years ago god knows where it is now.... probably in a small cube!

been thinking i want to do it to my current one, but that would just be stupid and a waste of a good golf, should be fun chopped 16v and all hahahahha would fly........

I wish my g/f's Vento was white. Her red one is nice enough though. Also 96. I know this will create a stir here, but its dropped 40mm, has Koni reds, nice amount of neg cam on the front, and handles far mor neutrally than my Mk2 GTI. It is amazing how well that thing handles...

Heres my 79 3 door, its an EFI 1.8L with a Wolf 3D comp, Mk2 induction manifold, 5 speed box, 4 wheel disc brakes the fronts are ventilated, Bilstein shocks. It's a BMW metallic paint with BMW rims also the interior has been all retrimmed.

I will soon purchase some extractors and put a nice sports exhaust system on it to make it go a little bit harder (although it already fly's) but not attract to much unwanted attention, and maybe one day rebuild the engine and do some internal mods balancing etc.
