Just wondering seen alot of mk1s on rotisseries and it looks like it makes its alot easier to work on the under body!

Was interested to know does the car need to be fully stripped or can the engine be left in?

nah, have to take the motor out, or the car be hard to roll.
better to have the car in bare shell stage first....
ive never had a golf on a spit but ive had a few mk1 escorts on one.
shure beats the hell out of laying on the ground with dirt in your eyes. :D

GO here and have a read, then decide what you want to do.

You need to be able to WELD metal competantly as there is still some weight left in the shell when it is on the rotisserie.

I built one of these for the Mk1's I have, went down in size of the tubing BUT kept the wall thickness the same.

Suggestions :- use 4" dia wheels and unless you have a perfectly flat floor, use only 3 wheels as opposed to 4. ( change from 2 wheels on the inner cross piece to 1 )

Cost me about $250 - $300 to build, + time ( 1 day with frequent booze stops)

I heard that logic was more practical than welding steel - cheaper too :D

That isn't mine - I copied the design, though! (I think that's what the net is for!) lol :D

If you put legs on the bare ends, then it's a useful stand for the car too. The only negative is that it doesn't roll around without making a separate dolly, but I don't see why you'd need to move the car unless you're transporting it elsewhere.

It costs under $50 to make.

Front and rear "bumper" 4x2's are 174.5cm long.

The wedges are 60cm radius 1/4 rounds out of 23mm thick ply.

The strut behind the car bridges the two B-pillar seat belt mounts together to keep the car stiff and also stop it over-rotating. It is 166cm long.

Works very well without all the complication and expense :)
