While it's officially "unsupported" I thought it worth mentioning that VCDS seems to run perfectly in Windows XP running through Parallels. You could always dual boot using Boot Camp if your wanted to be completely in Windows, but it's up to you.
I had tested it before using a eBay knock off of the cable and the old software, but it's nice to know that a genuine cable with the latest version of the software works just as well.
So for all those people with MacBook's out there, you can still enjoy some VCDS loving.
