From memory, I think it was this VIN decoder

http://www.abvwc.org.uk/vw_vin.htm

Not sure how accurate it is though.

hey phaeton, not all mk2's are German. all the later big bumper digi2 1.8 models that were proper imports are German, but you will find pretty much all the earlier private imports are South African.

My Transporter came from Graz, Austria.

(The Australian factory closed in dec '76, so any '77 models were German)

The VIN is under the windscreen and on your rego papers.
It should be something like;

WVWzzz19zGW***********

WVW VW Germany passenger car

19 Golf 2

G year model (1986)

W manufacture plant (see table above)

(The "z" is just a filler)

I found out here that the GLi was later rebadged as a GTi
http://www.vwgolfmk1.info/main/Buyingacab.pdf

I have no idea where it was built, I think it has a new head of another mk1 on it because the head is Brazilian and everything els is German. You guys have told me you dont know either, so im still confused.

This is what i got from the VIN decoder:
Year: 1979 (or maybe a 1969 Ghia)
Model: Golf Mk 1, including cabriolet
Serial Production No.: 116636

What was the details again.

If it's a '79 (Chassis number 179*******) Have a look at the glass and it will tell you whether it was made in Germany (Wolfsburg) or South Africa.
If it has an Australian compliance plate, then it came from Germany.

Yeah its got the Australian compliance plate.
If the chassis number is 176, it is assembled in Australia.
If the chassis number is 177, 178, 179, 17A, it is made in Germany, Wolfsburg.

That's it.

Mine (2005 Golf Comfortline 2.0 petrol) shows Italy, on the plate under the bonnet.

So had to vote "other"

All the time I've owned it I'd assumed it was South Africa built so there you go :)

That link above doesn't appear to be working:

On that basis I'm going for Spain for where mine was built (build date Feb 06)

edit: after further research, the 11th number in my VIN is Y, which = Pamplona, Spain (SEAT Factory)

I got that from here:

VW VIN Codes - Club VeeDub (http://www.clubvw.org.au/vwvin)

I tried one or two others, like the one previously mentioned in the Scirocco thread on here:

Cybertects: VW VIN Decoder (http://www.cybertects.co.uk/scirocco/vincheck.php)

But that just gave me Europe as the area of manufacture.

so Win :)
