View Full Version : Rear axle droning sound

Lately I've been getting a droning sound coming from the rear wheels/axle. At first I thought it was just the exhaust but I've had that quietened and the pitch of the droning hasn't changed and if I take it out of gear and just roll the noise stays the same.
The noise itself isn't always there, it comes and goes and usually starts between the 60km - 80km/h mark and lasts maybe 15-30 seconds before going away.
I've got Porsche D90's 16x8 with 16x7.5 tyres with adapters/spacers.
I'm wondering if I just need a rear wheel balance or is it something else?

May be a possibility but could it be the rear tyre on that side?
Our Mazda 6 had a droning sound and every mechanic/tech that heard it said "Quick replace your rear wheel bearing"
Anyway we had the rear tyres changed a couple months later and the sound dissappeard.
May be a possibility but I'll let the experts put in their opinion.

the obvious first thought is a wheel bearing and spaceers will make it worse. jack it up and try and wobble the wheel.
could also be a warped disc so give the wheel a spin to see if its catching.

Finally got around to jacking the car up (didn't want to cos I have a crapy jack) but anyway the wheel catches and you can clearly hear the disc catching.
Where would I go to get it fix/replaced? just a general brake place? Or somewhere else since its an older golf?

Any decent garage should be able to do them (replace both sides at once or you could get a brake imbalance). I think the rear discs are the same as the mk3 2.0 so shouldn't be too expensive or har to get hold of.
I think the wheel bearings are mounted in the discs aswell so you may aswell change these at the same time.

Will see what I can do as the noise is starting to drive me up the wall
