I know there are reasons why an auto VR6 is not a good idea, but I would like to hear them from someone else, also what are the positives about them? There are heaps of autos for sale, they mostly have low k's, they may not be flogged. Why aren't they flogged? are they too slow? Cheers

As far as i know the reasons are, Expensive to fix if something goes wrong, very very heavy and finally auto vr6 are much slower than manual.

Add to that they are very sluggish :(

with a lazy 4spd... Steve ya right, very sluggish
I hate cars with auto, hate to do kickdowns
you just always have to watch out for your right foot when driving an auto.
else the fuel gauge will be empty in 60secs:D

I've got an auto and she goes alright. Its averaging around 10.5/100 at the moment city driving. Ok take off is a little heavy but very good mid range. I've blown away alot of car's that i though i had no chance against.

My mechanic says VW auto boxes are prone to exploding.

Yup, exploding. He showed me the casings of a few dead ones with significant chunks taken out of them by gears flying the coop.

My mechanic says VW auto boxes are prone to exploding.

What models?

The older ones were always bullet proof.:???:

My memories really fuzzy. I think we were talking about auto golfs and then he showed me the dead boxes.

i cant tell you how close i came to buying one, i was literally going to go put a deposit on a grey auto, then i spoke to Matt (golfloon) as i was walking out of the house to go give my hard earned away. he said that they are

3 seconds slower than a manual

they are more juicy - manuals are juicy enough

and the gearboxes start to go at about 100ks and will cost you a couple of grand to repair/replace.

so listen to the guys when they tell you its a no go.....

i havent heard of the vr6 ones exploding. But i have heard of them playing up. shift point issues. I know one guy who got annoyed to the point where he just did a manual conversion cos no-one was able to tell him what the problem was.

Just as I suspected, I was hoping to be pleasently suprised. Those 100 or so autos can stay for sale.

DIT what is it about the auto that you like? Have you driven a manual VR6 before?

No i haven't driven a manual VR6 before but I've driven manual cars all my life and now prefer the auto for its simpleness and comfort to drive.

Your right about that, as i mentioned before i was nearly gonna get one. I remember when i was younger i was like " aint now way im ever gonna get an auto", just goes to show that as you get older you learn to appreciate the ease and relaxed driving mode of an auto...But everytime i get into that VR6, its so hard not to put your foot down and get a little thrill! i test drove an auto VR6 before i bought my one and it was like a different car. Each to their own i guess...maybe one day i might have to join you with some of that auto action!
