what is the best way to make my Australian Golf faster without putting a VR6 in it?
I have been told they are un-tuneable.
Will removing the catalitic converter do anything?

get you in big trouble if you get caught without it....
Assuming you car is standard, i'd start off with a mk 3 2l down pipe and decent exhaust (inc a bigger/high flow cat) and maybe a good air filter.
If you want to work the 8V a bit, common mods are 2L bottom ends with big valve heads & bigger throttle bodies. UK ECU's are meant to throw more fuel into the mix too. Apparently you can fit a bigger MAF on there too (from a 5 series BMW I think)
A 16V would be nice, as they already make a bucket more power than our 8V's, standard!
Poor mans power modifications... Strip weight where ever you can!

You've got about 98hp with the Aussie spec motor. A 2litre engine swap brings it up to around 110 which is similar to UK spec 1.8l motors but with more torque. Add the Mk3 downpipe and you've got a few more hp and more torque. You should be able to do this for under $500. Add a decent cam and some bigger valves and you're getting enough horsepower to start having fun without spending too much.
While you have the exhaust pulled apart hit the cat a few times on the ground to dislodge all the rusted out bits which will help with the airflow.

I run a K&N, catback exhaust, 276 cam and HD valve springs, its alot faster than a stock mk2, the most restrictive part is the exhaust manifold though. Either bin the car or just get a metal vr6 one when you get the manifold done mate :)

My 1992 MK2 lacks a cat, but it passed roadworthy?

Do they do emission tests in qld? you only need a cat if your car is built after july '88

I just had a read over the rules of QLD's emissions tests.
From what I read of the QLD transport website, if your cars emissions are poor, you are 'suggested' to get it checked.
Do you see a cat?

www.germanautoparts.com
That would be the easiest. Not the cheapest though.

Drop Golf Loon a PM. Probably the cheapest option.

Isnt there a search function. It seems like the same thread pops up every month or so.
Its always the same thing.
cam
Air filter
chip
mk3 duel downpipe exhaust manifold
2L bottom end
will cost you under $1000 if you do it yourself and you will have a fun car.
If you want to take it further you can add:
Full exhaust
38/40 porting on the head
Dynos have shown 145-155hp at the fly....which requires a new clutch.
You can go bigger porting on the head, port matching or whatever its called, go to 2.1L, even bigger cam and stand alone ECU but your still guna be closer to 155hp then you are 200hp. It will work out cheaper to do a vr6 conversion.
