When i bought my cabbie, they told me it was a '79 but i'm not so sure and i don't know how to tell from the VIN.

If anyone know how the vin system works on the older models and it doesn't have a compliance plate coz it's 2 old! any help would be appreciated!

The VIN i have for it is 1592800463 but i'll check it on the car tomorrow.

I have searched the forums but can only find someone saying that the first 3 numbers denotes year - i.e. 177 = 1977, 179 =1979 etc. i doubt mine is a 1959 though.

Cheers, Steve-o

It's a '79.

159............ The 15=Cabrio (built by Karmann in Osnabruck) The 9 denotes 1979.

179........ The 17=Golf Mk1 Hatch. The 9 denotes 1979.
