Hey there

This is a car me and my son will be building up. We have already bought a 20 Valve engine and just waiting for delivery. We will be removing the current 1400 16 Valve motor, Gearbox with shift linkage and we will be selling the rims and tyres which we will advertise in the for sale column.

So we will be putting up pics and asking for advise as we go along.

Andy and Ondrej

P.S. how do we put pics up?

Sounds like an interesting project! can't wait to see how it unfolds.

for pics, get an account on photobucket.com (free) and you can upload your pics with them, and then post them directly into your thread

I'll be keeping an eye on this!

the 6n chassis was crying out for a decent engine, sounds like your going to put one in! :D

So what's the idea behind the build? Building it just for fun, daily driver, track days or anything?

Oh. My. God.
I love it.
So. Jealous.

thanks i am just as jealous because my son is going to enjoy it and i have to build it. it is going to be his drive around car with the occasional street drag meet.
after his project we will hopefully start with mine

This is going to be a very interesting thread. I had my 97 Polo with Matt for a week trying to fit a 1.8 motor and gearbox from a Seat but it just wouldn't fit. Subframe would have to be severley modified and the motor was too tall.

But like Golfman says, the old Polo's are crying out for a decent engine. If you can carry it off it should make for a really good car. Size is similar to the MK1 Golf and it doesn't take much to get it handling really well. With a decent engine and suspension mods it's sort of like a modern MK1.

Here's mine before I hit a kangaroo and wiped out the front passenger corner. My MK2 is nowhere as refined to drive but it does go quicker. If I could fit the MK2 mechanicals into the Polo I would be a happy man.

i have never spend so much thought on how to tackle this project and reckons everything will fall in place as we go along. my hardest project was building a rwd mk1 golf by installing a golf mk2 front suspension in the rear. so hopefully this will be an easier mission thanks to everybody for showing interest. we will try to show people the ups and downs as we go along where somebody may have better ideas or insight to help us along aswell.

No sorry stephy we lost all the pictures when we moved here from South Africa. A friend of our still has one we will try get pictures and there is a MK1 Golf with a turbo engine in the front and rear of the car we will try get pictures of that aswell

you might have a problem with the drivers side engine mount being on the upper side of the chassis leg compared to the 1.8t being underneath, but nothing too hard i can imagine, just heling you out ;)

the motor arrive tomorrow, and our first job will be to get all the right motor parts as we want to build a 2.1 sub, head port and what ever. still trying to find a decent pair of camshafts. i prefer high lift and lumpy stuff. we will get all the magic goodies and then fit the motor.

Do you need crazy camshafts for a 1.8t?

Or are you rebuilding the 16v?

cat cams 3658 are the lumpiest cams out for a 1.8t but require an aftermarket ecu

If all it takes is more interest to make you work faster I'll update this thread every 5 minutes. :)

Took my 96 Polo for a run yesterday for the 1st time in a year (I've been driving the MK2 all that time). After sitting in the garden gathering cobwebs for 12 months it fired up straight away - just needed jumper leads 'cause the battery was flat. I couldn't believe how easy it was. Nice to drive too after a year driving a low (stiff) MK2. The Polo is lowered but still feels soft (compared to the MK2). Goes hard through corners too, like the MK2, but soooo much more refined. Hard to believe they are only 6 years apart.

Looking forward to seeing how yours goes, these cars are so underrated. All they need is a bit more power.

Cheers

Paul

- Lucas with a A4 1.8t.
- Valver's Mk1
- Tim from Geelong and his Mk1 kjet turbo
- Jay's Mk4 r32 from QLD
Thats just a few.

Id suggest you have a look at some of the results from recent dyno days. Plenty of VAg cars pushing over 200kw's atw.

Hi, Still going been a bit slow as we have not had much time at work to do more polo related work. But we got some spare time recently and managed to shorten the A3 rear drive train frame. Here are some pictures of it on the mill.

Nice job on that rear subframe!

This is going to be such a great car - I''ve seen a couple of AWD 6N's on youtube with various powerplants but one in Australia is just fantastic!

Hi guys

Long time since we have posted or really done much to the car. Mum and dad are busy renovating the house and I've had an ACL recon so things have slowed a bit but we have done a bit more work over the last week. Let's just say that we are slow movers haha

Here are some pictures of the engine mounting.

Hi guys

We know it's been a long time since we've posted or even done anything to the car. Life and other projects has gotten in be way a little but we're back on track and looking at finishing this overdue project off hopefully next year.

Now I can see photos on my phone so I'll try pick up from where we last posted, we managed to get our S3 floor pan welded into the chassis which came out a lot better than we could have dreamed.

We have decided to move away from the 20V engine since starting and we think we're onto something a bit easier/better from a build perspective, don't want to give too much away now but once I get a few pictures I'll post them up.

We will be a lot more active starting around mid November as we're both got a bit on until then but we are back and ready to finish up what we started.
