Smooth maybe. But not terribly fast. I was more than a bit disappointed with the performance of these MK Vs. My eyeballs still hurt from all the lights on the dashboard, the roof, the steering wheel, vanity mirrors, console, gearshift, door knobs, ashtray, footwell, glovebox............... 8)

If I spent even 1/10 of that sort of money on my MK I my eyeballs would be flattened against the back of my skull!

Haven't driven the petrol versions but the diesels are just sensational. Handling, drivability, performance are just incredible. Can't say I was "Blinded by the Light"! Not wishing to be a Ludite however, it's a good point that you could spend a whole lot less modifying a Mk1 and have one hell of a car! I'd start with the brakes........
