Hi guys,

My first post here. Seems like this is a great community.

Well, the brake warning lamp of the Treg is on and my dealer checked the brakes, disc are fine but pads need to be changed. They quoted me the following:

$550 for the front pads
$360 for the rear pads
+ 2 hours of labour
= $1179 for the whole job.

It seems to be very expensive. They kindly explained that the brakes are attached to the sensors and new sensors are required. If I take it to someone else, make sure I use genuine pads with sensors etc. Does it normally cost that much to replace the pads only?

This is the first time I change brake pads for the Treg (done 32000KM) and any advice would be appreciated.

Oh, I live in Sydney and quoted from Artarmon. Don't mind traveling if I can get it done somewhere else cheaper ... sorry for the long post :-P

Defo call around and get a couple of quotes. both dealers and independents.

Brake pads shouldnt affect your warranty if they arent done by a dealer, same as tyres etc.

U can get aftermarket pads that come with the wear sensors

Thanks guys

Anyone know where to get it done independently in Sydney? I guess dealers will be quoting similarly, but I will certainly try.

That seems outrageous.

We do heaps of brakes on VWs and Audis and its never close to that much.

I use German branded OEM pads with the wear sensors and we ause VW trained staff and factory software.

Its an easy drive to us at Campbelltown and I can quote you and book you in if you call me with the VIN, and vehicle details so I can confirm the pad type and price.

yeah Ramesh, that's why I think $1179 pad only is out of ordinary.

And you weren't quoted for discs? Add another $500 each end to that.
Point to remember that a 2.5 ton Touareg with 330mm Brembro brakes is not a Golf at half that weight.

Damn, your brake pads are costing more then my first car did.
Sounds expensive, maybe get pads without the sensors and check them every 10k kms.

No, was told the disc are fine and don't need to be replaced.

That's kind of true, and also kinda of alot of scare mongering... The wear sensors, although a genuine part, are probably 99.99% made by a company called TRW, or one of their subsidiaries, like Remsa.

We supply Remsa parts, which are part of the TRW group of companies, and as good (if not better) than what comes standard. Will also come with the wear sensors, which as I said, is probably identical to the OEM one, which is probably made by TRW. Remsa are also becoming VERY popular on this forum with everything who's tried them, including a moderator who happens to be a mobile mechanic and now loves them... (I'm sure he'll pop up soon! :p)

There's a few options on Remsa pads to suit the Touareg, so I'll list them all up with prices, and you'll be able to see the difference. Let me know your exact model and details, and I'll let you know which ones are applicable, but I'll put them all up now for reference.

Front
Ver imagen (http://www.remsa.com/catalogo/verimagen.php?ref=994.00) $175
Ver imagen (http://www.remsa.com/catalogo/verimagen.php?ref=995.00) $180
Ver imagen (http://www.remsa.com/catalogo/verimagen.php?ref=1045.22) $149
Ver imagen (http://www.remsa.com/catalogo/verimagen.php?ref=1200-00) $145

Rear
Ver imagen (http://www.remsa.com/catalogo/verimagen.php?ref=996.00) $135
Ver imagen (http://www.remsa.com/catalogo/verimagen.php?ref=1187.02) $139
Ver imagen (http://www.remsa.com/catalogo/verimagen.php?ref=1240-00) $105

Nothing like the prices you've been quoted!

Any questions feel free to give us a bell on 1300 884 836.

Greg

Nick, definitely... you can buy a car for that amount of money

GSLrally - thanks mate, but have sorted it out with Matt of Camden GTI already.
