The old bunny has been tired lately....so time to do something! :P
Building a 1.9 8v engine for her(82.5 piston, custom Pauter rods) along with a few other goodies.
Will be running oversize brake/calipers on her, braided lines etc..
Currently running KW v3 coilovers.

why does the box say 1.8lt when your building a 1.9?

why does the box say 1.8lt when your building a 1.9?

dom

Because its 1.8 rods just longer (custom) to 1.9. The lenght is increased from std 1.8 rods, if im making sence.

yeah i know why and how to stroke a motor... was just asking why they would put 1.8lt on longer 1.9 rods

Wouldn't know man. Maybe to indicate that there custom or something, instead of people thinking there of the shelf.

Okay....

Engine and gearbox out, we weren't sure if it was a Heron so when we had a look we were quite surprised.

Nice dude. Glad to see you & your dad doing some upgrades to get this thing going.

The Part # appears to be a Pauter Rod number! Way overkill on this type of engine, but if your happy to spend the money. Go for it.

Just for interest sake. A bloke down here who use to build F2's engines said they use to spin there 1.6L to 10K on stock rods & they are very strong, even for forced induction too.

One thing I'm not too sure on though, is you've got a 1.6L but fitting 1.8L rods? This doesn't actually increase the capacity though, cause your crank stroke/offset is still the same.

All that fitting a 1.8L 144mm rod onto the stock 1.6L crank will do is move the piston out of the block!

To increase capacity, you need to offset grind your crank journals to increase the offset & stroke & using the stock 136mm rod you'll also need custom pistons with different piston pin heights to compensate for the increased stroke.

Many many moons ago Autotech did a 1.9L stroker kit using a US spec 1.7L crank, 136mm rods & with a 83mm Techtonics Tuning custom piston brought the capacity to 1869cc

So maybe just ask some questions why or what your using those rods for, unless your fitting a 1.8L crank to? Not sure if these fit in 1.6L blocks either

I have also read that some people used to run a offset ground 1.8L crank & using the earlier 136mm rod & custom/decked pistons, they can stroke the 1.8L too!

I do know on some stroker kits though, that the intermediate shaft may need some machining/clearancing

Thanks Tim!

We are using a 1.8 block( bored out and balanced bottom end), with a 1.8 crank and 84.2mm pistons. And yes, they are Pautor rods :P

Interesting facts there but.

I should of mentioned it, but a 1.8 block is getting prepared on the side ready to pop in the mk1. The 1.6 will just be put aside.

Ah ok.

So your not using the Heron head then? Unless you buy some very specific heron head style pistons or have them custom made

Just remember & I think we've been through this before. You can't go to 84.5mm pistons.

3.5mm overbore from what I know can't be done! Thats a 0.137 Thou Overbore & will probably end up in the water jackets!

From what I know & can find 83mm (83.5mm is the largest for a 2L block & very rare for a 1.8L block) piston are the largest piston you can buy for a 1.8L block & even then it isn't advisable for a track engine as this also causes cooling problem under extensive high load/pressure

opps typo I meant 82mm. There just stock 2L pistons.

Only if you've got a hard on facination with 1.6L Herons.

I don't. Prefer going for larger displacement anyday.

Afterall.

There is no replacement for displacement.

Even if it is only 1.8L! whoooooooooo.

82.5mm is stock 2L pistons.

You'd also want to double check the Piston Pin heights too! As the 2L had longer Rods!

This may put the pistons down the bore (with increased deck height/more clearance volume = less compression!) if you plan on using a 1.8L crank & 144mm rods

Oneofthegreats

I wish it was that easy. But its not.

Even if you grout filled the block it wouldn't cope with an overbore that much!

The 83.5mm overbore is still 0.098" Thou & is very much on/over the ragged edge!

The max I've always been taught is 0.060" max over bore on nearly every motor.

But VW bore linings must be thick, as a 83mm bore (0.079" over bore) is run of the mill stuff.

Once you go through the lining, welding, grout filling, or even pissing in it won't make any difference.

A cyl. lining is a lining. Once its gone. Thats the end of it, if its part of the block. (unless you re-sleeve it, or come up with some hair brained idea to convert a 85+mm removable iron lining out of another manufacturers block!) haha

Its all checked Tim. We dummy fitted to rods and pistons and on TDC, the pistons his goes just over the block deck. We still need to measure the TDC, but we will do that when we get more progress done in the engine.

Were not using 144mm rods, our rods are longer then 144mm but shorter then 159mm. :P

Well I'm very interested your engine spec!

Cause to go to 1.9L you only need a 83mm piston using the stock 1.8L crank & 144mm rod

If your pistons are too far out of the deck & the headgasket isn't thick enough, then its into the head quench & possibly valves! BANG!

Don't know of another rod inbetween 144mm (1.8L) & 159mm (2.0L) for the VW engine! Even then it would need custom pistons for the pin heights.

Had to go with longer rods cause of the pin position on the 2lt piston.

Pistons don't go over the deck that much....only a few mm. Ill have to get pic's once everything is put in.

Far enough.

Still doesn't make sense to me though.

Instead of having expensive custom(overkill) rods made, you could have got a much cheaper set of high quality 83mm (1870cc) or even 82.5mm (1847cc) pistons at nearly half the cost & not upsetting your rod/stroke ratio!

Horses for courses

Just be careful with pistons out of the block!

A few mm may not seem like much, but 3mm is 0.118" thou & a normal headgasket is only 0.040" thou. The piston will still knock on the head!

16v_kid
02-05-2010, 08:18 PM
Dad doesn't like building his engines with stock rods. Number for reasons, weight, strength etc..
But the rods really aren't that expensive as you may see it, under 1k. We didn't go with the custom pistons because this engine was budget build and he didn't want to build his 16v itb motor on a 2L bottom end, so might aswell get the rods now and use them on the 8v as well.

Dad will explain to you everything in person next time you guys see each other. Its a little complicating over the net.

Cause we will have the rear bar for the harnesses, I think it will help with the stress on the rear end so no need for a rear bar. Good point but (:

The block is from my dads old GTI, short block 144mm.

I think he was talking about the sway bar the goes along the rear axle. I would have thought a sway bar does more good than a stress brace on the rear?

Whats the benefit of the added negative camber on the rear?

Are you guna engineer and road register it? Should be prity zippy when its finaly done.

16v_kid
31-05-2010, 10:52 PM
The camber on the wheels is meant to increase grip while going through corners....good for two wheel action:banana:

The car already has a rear sway bar, but we also have an after market one 28mm from Autotech with poly bushes etc.

Yeah, should be a great zippy car. Hoping to get it on the track in a month or two, but we will see how we go. Still waiting on valves from Supertech. They were having some supply issues but they are slowly trying to overcome that problem. Due to dispatch by the end of the month. Hopefully they make it in time.

This may put the pistons down the bore (with increased deck height/more clearance volume = less compression!) if you plan on using a 1.8L crank & 144mm rods

Thats why we had to use custom rods. If we were to use 144mm rods, it would push the piston down= to less compression like you said. Thats if you were using a 82.5mm piston. Audi 1.9 has a lower pin position in the piston, hence why it wont lose compression using a 144mm rod.

I thought this was a story on your so called "little makeover" on your car Gordan, the subject seems to have turned against you having to prove what model you actually have.
Just keep going on the makeover subject, you dont have to prove to me at least whether its a GLi or GTI. I dont really care for one, its not standard anyway.
Cheers!

Thank you Andrew!!!!

Was curious my self about this one. A few people said they cannot believe that it is physically possible to fit them. So here it is...

Thoughts? Single/Twin headlights? Eyelids?

Buller_Scott

that is so sick. im watching this thread with interest now! should be awesome!

imo single headlights are the way to go, i like the eyelid bar/ thin panel you can get for mk1's, but if not, the single headlight is always a winner.

cant wait to see this done!

I reckon singles takes the win.

Dashboard- arrived!

After nearly a month a waiting for it...:(
Here is little story to tell you about all the mischief.

It departed UK in late June and had stopped transit in Paris FedEx facility. I few weeks went by and it was still in the FedEx facility, in Paris. I contacted FedEx right away to see what was going on. It was reported as 'Lost'. I couldn't believe it. A investigation was held to find it. After a few days later, I get a phone call from FedEx telling me that the dash was found. It was shipped over that night.

It arrived at my door step about 3 days after, wrapped in FedEx paper! Once I had ripped of the paper, I found the dash there in one piece, lucky! But, it didn't end there. The seller had taking off the trim that surrounds the instruments so the dash could fit in a smaller box, for less postage cost. The trim was never found in the package FedEx sent me. I contact FedEx and they told me the original package was opened up and then re-packed by FedEx. This is where the trim got lost. The seller contact me and he wasn't happy about this either. He is going to send me one of his spare trim from a S1 dash. Very kind of him to do so.

Welcome to the joy of importing parts from afar that others pack !!!!

Make sure you take out basic insurance with the mailing / couriering of the package, has saved my wallet a few times ;)

Insurence is a must!

Can't believe FedEx packs package's so weak! It was like a big plastic bag over it. No bubble wrap or anything like that. Sellers not to blame, I believe he spent quite a long time packing it up to make sure it got here safe.

Slow progress on the '79

Got my hands on a center push button horn from the States, that I was missing for the early GTi steering wheel.

Thanks Micheal from the States for his time to buy the horn for me at Kombi House, appreciate it mate. All clips on the steering wheel we had were broken off. So had to source a new steering wheel horn just for the bracket clips.

My relative from overseas gave it to me as a gift.

I have another one, but the horn is brown.

If you interested in one, I can contact a few people overseas for one.

Holy **** that is awesome. Very nice work!!! How much did you pay for it (if you don't mind me asking)? Can still you register it if it's LHD?

It's gonna be a nightmare to maintain though, no? Either way i am mega jealous, one of my top 10 all time favourite cars.

Thanks mate,
Its our very own private import. It will be converted to RHD and registered.
Yes and no, you can nearly buy every part new for this car overseas, pretty amazing.
