has anyone actually used their bottle opener? why do we have one? is it some sort of ancient design feature that has carried down through the models?
it seams out of place in a modern car to have a really daggy old school bottle opener.
it doubles as an adjustable cup holder. Its kinda cool really. I was caught without a bottle opener once until I remembered there was one in my car.

Real Germans don't need bottle openers, they use their bare hands to open beer bottles... LOL

does any one know where you can buy these from? ( i checked ebay) my Mk5 is missing it which means i have no real cup holders in the car, its quite annoying.
actually my second question is, is the bottle opener cup holder any good? if its not i might just order an oem cup holder from ebay us which replaces that entire area (pictured belove) with real deep circular cup holders, found in the jetta and other US models.

I usually put a single cup into the deep holder, which is generally fine without the bottle opener being tightened on it. If I have two cups, I put the first cup into the shallow holder, push the bottle opener up to it, then put the second into the deep holder. Works well.

lol... seriously... I guess this is what happens when a brand gets too popular... the knowledge of the 'folk lore' and 'quirks' dilutes ;)
Anyway - you can purchase genuine VW European parts from an American store called OEM Plus (http://oemplus.com/). They're setup to allow those poor American souls to purchase the cool spec accessories and parts that the Europeans (and we) get that they dont.
Here is a direct link to the bottle holder (http://oemplus.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=75_108_110&products_id=790). It's US$30 plus whatever the shipping is.
You could also call your local VW Dealer or Accessories line and order it through them. Or if you recently purchased your car and it was not included, call them and ask them to give you one! :)

I am actually looking for this bottle opener as well, as the jetta i purchase did not come with one... that website you mention states US$100+ for shipping...

jessv3, actually the middle part can be used for take away coffee cups works a treat so you can still store things in the cup holders

Thats what i want but not 100% sure if it will fit in an MK5 GTI, ive only seen it in overseas models.. All the GTI's here seem to have the bottle opener configuration (which is pointless as its not deep enough for a bottle or a cup)
upgrade to an Octavia

Seriously?? Email them and ask them if they can just put the thing in a USPS Flat Rate envelope or something (obviously removed from its box). That'll cost like US$13.

I wonder why they put a cheap looking plastic sheath and logo on the bottle opener.
The old solid brushed stainless steel version from the MkV GTI looked much more chunky and classically designed IMHO... And I would've thought it cost less to produce also.

FYI, I only used my bottle opener to actually open a bottle on 2 or 3 occasions during my 4 years of MkV ownership..

It does look rather swish and I scored one of those with my Golf. I don't feel too confident in the plastic one for opening bottles, not that I'd be doing that in the car anyway.

The plastic one still has metal inserts where it grips under the lid of the bottle, so its going to be still strong enough to open most bottles.. The full stainless steel one stands out a bit with the black console, they need a matt black full stainless steel opener..that would be sweet.
I have to say I'm a tad disappointed. I looked up Maverick's site and there's no information re a retro fit of a bottle opener! I know I should've done a thread search first though... :P

It will fit but why would you fit that insert when it's a pov pack option?
The Americans are replacing theirs with the style that we get standard here in Australia.
And it's a big job requiring you to remove the gear stick knob, surrounds, the whole console and so on.

Old one was all metal and worked well. New one is a lot lighter , but I will have to wait until my GTI arrives next month to compare - still have the old bottle opener. Cheaper to make I would say.

I have both and the old one just looks more solid and it is the one I use in the bottle slot. Had been told changed simply because of pricing - therefore new one must be cheaper for VW.

The bottle opener was the clincher on the deal to get the GTI for me. I thought it was a absolutely fantastic idea. The amount of times i have been caught out at a BBQ with out a bottle opener...... No More. Thanks VW.

Cheers for that link - I notice they have the genuine fog lamp kit which I have been searching for (since it's not available without a sports pack, which I didn't bloody want on my 103TDI family hack)

Hi all,
Bought a new 118TSI two weeks ago from WA dealership and it was missing the bottle opener. Emailed them and they promised to post one out. It didn't come. So when I wrote a letter to the dealer principal to complain about the dirty interior and exterior of the car, I also mentioned the bleeping bottle opener.
Today I received an empty damaged letter from the dealership that had a hole in one corner. I guess the bottle opener was supposed to be in it. Now whether this is just an Aust. Post stuff-up or otherwise, I'll never know... but the fact that my complaint wasn't actually acknowledged with a letter was a little annoying.
They had also offered me floor mats after I mentioned that Dermot in Wangara would give me some... no news from them on that front either.
So I guess I've had enough of my local dealership here in WA and will probably deal with Wangara VW in future...and my girlfriend is thinking of buying a new polo....
This has not been the happy experience that one expects from buying a new car.
Anyway, as to the bottle-opener: Just bought one on Ebay for $15 (QLD seller). Hopefully that will make it through the post intact.

Could this be a common practice amongst VW dealers?
I noticed my bottle opener was missing on delivery - and mentioned it.
The response was "Oh yeah, we're a bit short of those at the moment. Waiting on a delivery."
That was December 2009. Still waiting on that delivery apparently, as I haven't received mine.
Aren't these delivered WITH the car when they hit the docks?
Shame that a $5 piece of kit has tarnished a $40K purchase for you though.

The bottle opener is an optional accessory are they not?
I've never heard of them being standard kit. Correct me if I'm wrong so I can drive down to VW and get mine!

I'd suggest you start the engine.

Ive seen that seller. He has been listing them for a while now and sold heaps.
I decided to order one just to see what the go is because they are way cheaper than what VW charge. The one I received was very slightly soiled. Im betting the guy works for a dealer and has been pocketing them from new cars to sell on ebay! So people that are buying them are probably just buying their own ones back hehe

Picked up my Golf earlier this week - dealer made a point of giving me my bottle opener (before I asked or checked the car)... I mentioned that people in the forums are getting cars without bottle openers and his reply was that they do have to be bought in separately by the dealer...
The dealer made a follow up call today to ask if I had any questions and to make sure I'm happy...
Regards,
- Anthony.

Thought that might be the case...
I rang Aust Post distribution centre today about the damaged letter. They said it would have got caught in the automated sorting gizmos and should not have been put in the standard evelope. They log all such lost items andadvised me to call again next week as it may turn up.
That means I may end up with two bottle openers.... Now that's crazy.

Ended up with 2 bottle openers .The dealer gave me one to slide in the bottle holder in the centre consol and there was also one in a pocket of the leather/vinyl service book cover .

right, i have looked at my V6 Passat and i am upset that I dont get one at all...What are they trying to say about Passat owners? I am writting a letter, this is unacceptable!!!!! when I buy a $65k car i want my bottle opener....this is outright discrimination...its an outrage..

most bottle openers nowadays are of the moulded aluminium claw design that fits on your key ring, the vw bottle opener is a relic from 1950s design.
