and quite clearly he was a threat to his and everyone's safety - to society even.

Its good to see our laws are in place to protect us all from these reckless hoodlums who drive over-powered vehicles and probably have absolutely no idea how to control them, and risk our lives every day they go near a car.

damn hoons!!!

whilst i agree to a certain extent that static burnouts are far from dangerous compared to ludicrous speed. I also think that if either u or me would get crucified for performing such an act that so should Lewis hamilton. He isnt above the law!

What an absolute farkin joke, all this does is make Australia and the Victorian police an international laughing stock. What a pathetic nanny state this country has become.

Agree Tim, but my comment is aimed at the stupidity of the law, and the draconian nature of its application

If I had a C63 AMG I would probably get done exactly the same. I agree the law should be applied fairly, but if someone says it was dangerous, they're a twat.

Who cares!

He should cop it on the chin like everyone else I say!

He broke the law & he has to deal with it as much I also reckon it is a bloody joke!

I've never seen anyone get killed or even injured from a static burnout!

I'm still yet to see statistics on the death rate from burnouts & such so called "hoonery" compared to high speed & drink driving incidents!

Isn't it funny how the police always manage to call off a car chase right before a major smash or incident! Mmmmmm right!

But its alright for the police commissioner to carry bullets on a aeroplane!

Funny. the article has more mention of Mark Webber than what Hamilton did!

people in new zealand who are laughing their asses off at the fact that red tape is witholding the scirocco and the golf R etc etc, are laughing even harder now.

tie me kangaroo down, sport, we're a joke- wouldnt be surprised if other F1 host nations have tears in their eyes, they're laughing so hard.

I totally agree with the principle of hoon laws.

They are supposed to capture the idiots who do reckless things like donuts in shopping centre carparks whilst others are there, or highspeed fistails in the wet, both of which there is a realistic rsik that someone could be hurt or killed.

What we have is a bunch of idiots who are applying it to the nth degree and making a mockery of the system.

Right now, a DSGed car blips the throttle when down-changing. The way things are going, that will be grounds for confiscation and crushing!!

27-03-2010, 08:36 PM
Surprised after searching no one has the event on youtube. But there is about 2 minutes of footage where a hamilton entourage tries to obscure the camera view of lewis while being booked. Nothing worth watching.

JustCruisn
27-03-2010, 11:39 PM
I want to know why the police think that locking up his car for 2 days would be punishment for him.
I bet after 1 phone call he had another AMG waiting for him. The car will be back on the lot on Monday as originally planned.
So what did the confiscation do ? SFA. = Another failure for hoon laws.

gareth_oau
28-03-2010, 12:54 AM
same reason that they locked up the doctor's lamborghini in Perth after the mechanic was caught driving it - because the legislation is an ass and it too narrow and narrowly imposed to account for every-day situations

Buller_Scott
28-03-2010, 02:07 AM
whhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaattt?!?!?!?! a mech was caught driving the lambo, so they punished the owner?

how does that figure? shouldnt they be confiscating the mech's license?

funny how the powers that be, are so lacklustre in their imagination that they're applying catch-n-book-p-platers-in-their-piece-of-s**t-vs-ss-commodores laws to the current formula 1 world champion.

funny how all these "hoon laws" seem to cast such a long shadow, and yet you dont see lewis hamilton smashing up a bob jane t-marts shop because they're not sponsoring easternats (whoopdee do, kingswoods doing burnouts). hoons are hoons are hoons and thats it eh?

good to see that the law is doing its best to keep society safe. meanwhile, i dont see much going on RE the two assholes that sexually assaulted that poor wheelchair bound girl, THEN proceeded to mercilessly bash her, THEN kicked her wheelchair away and tied her to a pagoda here in melbourne.

but atleast the formula one world champion has been punished for doing a burnout.

I support the anti hoon laws and find it good that no matter who it is, they still book them. If they hadnt booked Lewis it would have been double standards.
Seeing that shocking prang in Vic last night on the TV this morning, I am surprised that some here object to the road safety campain...

JustCruisn
28-03-2010, 10:06 AM
The problem with these hoon laws is that does not matter who owns the car.
If someone stole your car and got caught hooning it would get impounded. So you end up being punished. How is that fair ?
And for all the crashes on Vic this weekend how many were due to hooning ?

I don't object to it, but I don't support it...As Scott said, hoons will be hoons, whatever car they are in...Innocent people will die regardless of what laws are in place...At the end of the day, **** happens, and people die.

The more people that come onto the roads every year, the more accidents will happen...The fact that very little of the money made from road violations is being spent back on the roads means that I don't take the hoon laws seriously, and won't till they sort it out properly...

Its good that Hamilton got punished the way he did t prevent double standards, but the standard of the law in the first place is laughable...

The fact that very little of the money made from road violations is being spent back on the roads means that I don't take the hoon laws seriously, and won't till they sort it out properly...

Not a truer word has been said!

Funny I read about fixed speed camera's getting vandalized/burnt etc which they said cost the tax payer's approx $30+K.

But...

They also said in the same sentence that these camera rake in more than $1M each & every year!!!!!!!!!!

Now where does all that money go? I know it doesn't go back on the roads! I've seen the state of alot of main & secondary roads & they are s%#t to say the least!

At the end of the day I've said it a million times & I'll say it again.

It just too easy for cops to pull over & pick on young people behind the wheel & make stupid traffic laws & regulations, cause its just "too" hard for them to do real police work eg. finding drug dealers, rapists, murder's & robbers etc.

& I've been through this first hand too! Lazy arse fat coppers with speed camera's!

Ironic thing to happen. You'd think he wouldn't need to take his driving aggression out on a normal production car on public roads after racing the F1 on a circuit. I thought that would be one of the reasons people race, so they don't have to do it on the streets...

Christ! He done a burnout!(was probably a crap one too!) He didn't kill someone & the way it gets put across, he should be on "America's Hardest Prisons" as a hardened criminal!

Buller_Scott
28-03-2010, 03:34 PM
i can see the argument for being able to get your issues sorted on the track, and thus behaving sensibly on the road, BUT!

he's male + he's only 25 + he's in an AMG + he knows he can drive = he's probably only ever a bee's **** away from pulling the trigger and having a play.

as for the burnout- dont those cars have like 315 wide rubber on the back?

Henri
28-03-2010, 05:28 PM
I can understand the desire to have a bit of fun with your car, I'm 18, I'm always having fun in my car! However I make sure I stick to the limit on the roads & keep speeding to the track. Although for some reason I thought Hamilton was driving over the limit. Only just realised he was caught doing a burnout - he was probably just spinning the wheels a little. When has a burnout harmed anyone? :P

I think we can summarize this..

-Hamilton did something a bit silly considering where and when he has done it.

-The Australian road laws are a joke.

-Everybody likes to complain about the road rules.

-Some old people consider very mildly illegal acts in vehicles "hooning"

-Lara Bingle has a face like a smashed crab and a personality like a brick wall.

-Nobody cares about Lara Bingle.

Yeah yeah? :wasntme:

He's the reigning F1 World Champion. That's why it's such a big deal. He should be setting a better example. He races some of the fastest cars in the world, why did he feel the need to do a burnout on a public road? Formula 1 portrays itself an elite sport with the best drivers in the world. It's not for the bogan masses.

I can only imagine how ropable his team is, after he was caught doing it in a team car. Some angry Germans will be asking "Is this your vision of Mercedes?"

Jeremy Clarkson has proven that AMG Mercs are only really good for doing massive burnouts. If you owned one and didnt let one rip then you really dont deserve the car :D

It doesn't matter how famous or how good a driver he is. Doing a burnout on a busy city street is completely irresponsible and unnecessary. Wouldn't anyone expect to get a heafty fine and a few demerit points for that one?!

Blitzen

What he did was a bit silly, hardly dangerous in most circumstances, and certainly not when it was Hamilton driving.

BUT - anyone on here would get pinned for it - why shouldn't he.

The law is poorly written, the cops were just doing their jobs, remember they are sworn to prevent illegal activity when they witness it, regradless of their own personal opinion.

A simple fix would be to have the anti hoon laws have a single focus - 'Dangerous Activity involving a Motorvehicle' of course it would then come down to the cops interpretation and that could vary pretty widely, which wouldn't really be fair either.

No simple fixes in this world.

you know what is REALLY sad.

5 people died on VIC roads on the weekend (RIP). The one they televise, the one that was speed related!

What about the other 4 victims? What was the cause of their crashes? Of course everything is "speed related" its a dam motor vehicle! What about the fatigue/booze/poor road condition related ones?

gtimk5
29-03-2010, 12:32 PM
I saw the shocking fatality crash on the news yesterday and there wasnt anything left of the car, the police judged it as the worst they have seen in their careers. That definately involved speed.
Still doesnt get though to so many people over there though. No good blaming the roads all the time either, you drive to the conditions and road.
Stupid driving for anyone, let alone a young inexperienced driver who think they know all.
I cannot believe that some here condone breaking simple road rules.

And traffic police are a different section to crime police who are the ones that care of thefts and crime...

The bottom line is this... Hoon laws are a farce and designed to do nothing but keep the cardigans of the world happy. For EVERYTHING you can get done for under anti-hoon legislation, there is ALREADY A LAW!!! Speeding, Dangerous Driving, Wreckless Driving (what Lewis did because it certainly wasn't dagerous).

I'm so over this nanny state country. Even the US Govt. is warning our Govt. not to implement internet filtering. I'm moving to Europe if this sort of nonsense keeps up in Australia! Australia is going to become the laughing stock of the modern world. Even Webber said he thought it was rediculous. Can't wait to see Jeremy Clarkson's take on it in the next TGUK series...

How about directing Police efforst into CRIME and VILOENCE PREVENTION? How about taking people off the roads who don't have enough skill to be there to start with? Govts. (any of them) have NO idea!

well put,..... we get low speed limits on highways and freeways ....the solution to everything is lower speed limits everywhere and more speed cameras, instead of decent driver education and highway patrol cars actually on the road doing something useful.

Great publicity for merc too.

http://theage.drive.com.au/motor-news/hamiltons-burnout-car-hot-property-20100330-r9ga.html

Mercedes-Benz is fielding calls from buyers keen to buy the $150,000 car former F1 champ Lewis Hamilton used to do a burnout in last week.

A race of a different kind is taking place this week, with buyers now vying for the car that landed Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton in hot water with police.

It may have a little less rubber on its rear tyres, but the car the 2008 F1 world champion used for his much-publicised burnout before the start of the Australian Grand Prix could command a price premium.

Mercedes-Benz Australia senior manager of corporate communications David McCarthy was fielding calls from several customers keen to buy the car, which has a 6.2-litre V8 capable of launching the four-door to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds.

“More than half a dozen dealers have rung, which is in response to calls they’ve had (from customers),” said Mr McCarthy.
