View Full Version : No glovebox in VR6?

Ok, um, bit of a dumb question perhaps. But I don't think my VR6 has a glovebox?

Theres a passengers side airbag where a glovebox would be. Going off the golf manual it seems you either have airbag or glovebox, not both.

Correct?

Yep, there's actually two compartments where a glovebox could have been - the top half of the passenger side dashboard where the airbag is, and also the small section under it. Most cars here (or is it all cars?) were fitted with the airbag on the top bit, and a panel tray on the bottom part, but I've seen gloveboxes for both compartments before. Tommymac with the Mk3 dash conversion on his Mk2 has a top glovebox, and Mk3VR6 just recently added a lower glovebox.

correct rayray - all Aus delivered golf's have the top part filled with the airbag. the lower shelf was converted to a glove box (prob only big enough for a street map or a pair of gloves) in the 96+ models

No, the lower glovebox that you can get can actually fit a fair bit.

The shelf that come originally with the car, has room only big enough for a pencil!!!

Too right there John, thats so stupid that. The actual glove box that went in there is no change in the legroom its good. But whatever room it has it utilises it all.

I wish I could find myself a glovebox for my car. I have stuff lying around the door compartments and rear seats. It's pretty much the only hate thing I have with the Mk3.

You guys might want to see if a wrecker has a 96on mk3 glovebox.
We are paying $70-80nz for them from wrecks.
And im talking about the lower passenger side glovebox here, not the pre passenger airbag upper one.

Easy fit, 5 screws:D fits all mk3s

There should be a fair few; problem is, my dash is navy blue, and there aren't many Golf/Vento's out there with a navy blue glovebox too!

If your ignition key locks/unlocks it...it was fitted at the factory.
Most of the 95s i know of here did not get it, unless they are a late 95 on car.
Different markets got them at different times.

The reason i said 96on is that it will have one...and dont want to waste you guys time....as you head off to a wrecker to look for one from a 95 car.

Could be the previous owner fitted it (from a wrecked one)...if the key will not fit and lock it.

We have fitted a few to mates cars now...they have 92 - 95 mk3s.
Worth hunting down and getting if your mk3 does not have one.

i reckon all the Australian ones don't have the glove box
but in some countries they get both airbag and glovebox:rolleyes:

Thought about it, but it seems to be a fair bit of work just to get some extra compartment space. I'd rather one that came in navy blue!

Mysteries revealed!!!

I hadn't checked the lower part yet. But there's a shelf there that's practically useless. Kinda iritating too, where to keep CDs?!

I might hit up the VW wrecker I found this week and see what he's got!

CDs go in a cd wallet of course! and that sits nicely in a door pocket

I'm far too picky on what I want to listen to to keep a wallet of discs. Just pluck what I fancy that very second from my collection!

A glove box would be handy to stow them away in though. Failing that of course, theres always the under-the-seat trick.

True true. For me id just get one and fit it...stuff painting it.
When the time comes to sell the car, put the blue bin thing back in it.

And sell the glovebox to another mk3 owner.

What models of mk3 were sold new in ozzie? 3dr? 5dr? vento? variant? cabrio? cli/gli? gti? (8v & 16v) vr6?

Can you guys import second hand ones from japan? or singapore? south africa?

I have toyed around with the fact that I can try and go two-tone (blue top dash with black under-dash) but the glovebox I was eyeing on got sold to someone else, so I've ditched that thought haha.

I believe there were the 1.8L CL (later models came in 3-door), 2.0 GL (all 5-door), VR6 (all 5-door), early Cabrio and the late Mk3.5 Cabrio, and the Vento (I've seen GL versions around, not sure if there were any other versions). No variants and no GTI. I'm not sure but there may have been TDI's too? *looks at Oli* :)

Imports require a 1 year ownership of the car from wherever it is bought from, before you are able to bring it down. That's privately though.

x 2! I keep my, um, self-compiled CDs there, while I put bought CDs on the door shelf. I must say the door shelves make up for the lack of glovebox!

did you know you can fit a large KFC chips, a regular popcorn chicken, and a 600ml bottle of pepsi in the drivers door, all standing up, with the tops open for easy access? I do it all the time, it makes up for the lack of cup holders!

BlackVr6ix

It sure does :D, best cup holder i've ever had hahaha

When i bought my VR6, i had no idea there were no glove boxes in them, i cant tell you how weird that is, it doesnt look good on VW at all theat they couldnt design a better dash so that it incorporates a glovebox....

Its almost bordering pathetic, and thats coming from a dub head!

so if you were to get your hands on a glovebox off a 96 model, is it easy to fit in place of that pencil holder?

Tim

easy peasy to replace. hardest bit is getting a glovebox.
Ive been keeping an eye out for one and it seems they usually go for around $100!

I havent had the time lately, although it is on my to-do list for the car.

I'm fairly confident I can find one locally too.

Someone would have installed that at a later date as they did not come as standard in the 94's
