ok, some things will start happening to the mk2 from now on.
so ive made this thread to keep ppl up to date on whats going on with my pride and joy...lol

part one will be my run in with the transport when they checked my car over to clear a defect.
the guy drove the car up the ramps and used the door to lower himself to the ground (big guy, huge fella) snap goes the welds on the bottom hinge...
then told me i better get that fixed.
all is well, we ripped the door off n welded it up on monday.
few pics.............

Does it really need a paint job ? Doesnt seem so in the pics. Whats happened with the original paint ?

86gti
14-03-2007, 06:59 PM
Yea, its all good now. got it passed yesterday.
the paint is ok, bit faded on the bonnet and roof, and some paint coming off on the rear pannel, otherwise a few scratches annoy me every time i look at it. A buff would bring it up ok, but I would still see the scratches etc.
and once its done it will be a weekend car only.....the GTiR will become my daily driver. then ill start worrying about the mk1 a bit more. oh, too many things to do :(

Got my new rims today. second hand Volk replicas.
bit reminisant of a big ATS cup (sort of) lol.
wanted something with dish but still enough clearance for some Ajustable coil overs at a later date.
will have centers painted black and cleaned up when the car gets painted :D

The GTi-R looks awesome. The rear taillights are actually very reminiscent of those on the Mk2, and I kinda thought that was your Mk2 until I noticed that wing and badging (of course)!

Wheels definitely look sweet on the Mk2 - post some side shots for us! :D

cheers.
ive been a bit slack with the Mk2 lately. especialy with taking pics.
its coooooold down here and there is so much road work on the way to work that the car hasn't had a good clean for the last 2 months or so.
im tossing around the idea of a 16v for it at the moment runing on K-jet.
but really havn't come to a conclusion. Im a bit scared to go from a 2.0 to a 1.8....so maybe a 2.0 16v.....or my 2.0 block with a 16v head and some EFI and turbo action. Its such a brain strain.
but the Mk1 is for sale so I can get my GTiR upto daily driver specs and take the mk2 off the road for some TLC.

Few things are certain...and that is some coil overs, a Bonrath grille (de badged 2x lights) and some paint....
after that is done then ill move to interior...
If its a nice day on saturday I may give her a bath and take some pics :D

only pics i have with new rims are theese

Time to pull my finger out.
I finaly decided to sell my last long term project (RNN14 GTiR pulsar)
sold within a week...so now its time to get on with the MK2.

Ive started by puting on some Compomotive CXN rims 16x7.with toyo TR1s tyres..soon to be 16x8 when i get some transport and take the old girl in for some Paint and a bit of guard pumping.
Also on the way is KW v2 coil overs. So hopefully over the winter things will start happening :D ...
when a new daily thrasher comes I will start pulling her to bits.

Its running a mild 2E on k-jet..I'll leave it with that for the moment I think.
tossing up alot of ideas in that area. 16v 2.0, keep 2E, 2e on throttle bodies etc. hehe. Ill wait and see what pans out. biggest possibility will be a 16v on throttle bodies.

rims are looking good, will work well with a bit of dish imo

I know a 20vT would be very cool, and I had the option to do it myself but I just thought it'd take too much character away from the car, with a semi quiet turbo motor in.

2.0 16v FTW!!!!

When I have the money I want to rebuild my KR to 1.9L to give a good compromise of revs/torque increase. Soo many plans soo little money.

Dooooooooooooooooooooooo it! Those old escort are a bugger for axle tramp but drop in a t-15 5 speed and they are a barrel of fun.

Go the A4. I couldn't bear the urgency's of life now without a semi reliable modern car. Day 1 of the eski being dead as a doornail you'll thank me. They do it quite often (and I've had a few).

nothing unreliable about a 16v on kjet ;) Mine hasn't skipped a beat in 5 years and I thrash it daily. And it sounds.....OT

86gti
26-02-2008, 10:06 PM
lol... Yea a 16v on Kjet is likely... Want to keep it in the same vein as an original GTI.... Like Ausgolfer says, it takes away some character if you go for something high tech and turbo......one day Mk2 GTIs will be rare..very rare, especialy 3 doors...so i want to keep her close to standard... (not that i plan on selling it!!)

Basicly a nice respray (black) neaten it up, new seats, coil overs, and some dish on the new rims :-P ..
I now have another mk2 3door to go nuts on....so the old girl will get a spruce up and maybe a 16v on kjet...

New car....will get ..umm....unshure yet, but ive sold my GTiR pulsar, so ive got a few ideas...ARGH!!!.....

Gave up on the AUDI idea..Love the A4s...more of a cruising car tho... want something fun lol..... something different...so ill build my own car from another mk2 shell once the GTI gets her new paint!!!!! too much to think about now. lol

Hey benny, can you PM me the link for that DTM muffler? They are freakin sweet.
Amen re the non turbo thing. even tho i'm doin the 1.8t swap, i'm definately keeping the kjet motor from my grey car that is now being stripped. It was rebuilt a while back with a 1900 Audi block (not sure exactly which one), and a nice cam. I think its the bigger Euro 8v head too as it was an ex UK car. I've heard they had different heads??:???:
it had/has heaps of low down grunt even tho it was running poor!! That old motor will be handy for occasional use to keep the car eligible for TargaWest and hopefully Targa Tas in a few years!!
It will be nice to come back home (i'm an ex Launcestonian).
Whatcha doin with those BBS's?

Hey Hey.... sorry for late reply......I've been hibernating.:)
The muffler was found on ebay a while back by a mate. If you search for DTM muffler on ebay a few usually pop up. they usually go for around $ 50- 80 big ones....

The BBS rims are actually Compomotive CXNs....:D.. they are staying on the car, and getting a little wider in the near future.

........................
Update of whats going on .
Unfortunatly its still doing daily duties
My Bonrath grill turned up during the week and is now on the car.
Huuuuuuuuge thanks to Rocco Dingo and his contact in the UK for getting the grill and having it safely arrive in Tassie..( can't thiank you enuff mate ).
A large box of eurosport goodies and a few other bits is between here and the US too...should be arriving next week (I hope)

Taking a holiday mid July to get her up and stands and fit all the new bits.
So, things are happening...A little slowly tho, but i'm getting there! lol.

Bout to go wash the car..so i'll have some pics up in the next few hours....

Thanks fellas!
Yeah, ive been bashing my head and changing my mind as far as an engine transplant goes. :D

So im just going to concentrate on getting it neat again with a few goodies.
The 2e is fine for the moment, and ive become a bit of a lover of the 8v motor on kjet...

Basicly what I want at the moment is to have it fat and low.
Going to pull the rims out another inch next and see how much clearence I get..possibly mod some g60 arches to suit small bumpers. or mod the 2 sets of std arches I have to get the desired width. then some race seats up front and rip the back ones out and put them in storage.

Iv'e also got the other 3 door mk2 sitting there in storage waiting for me to decide what way i want to go with it...It will be a daily so at the moment im not planning anything major in the motor department. tho a 16v 1.8 might be the go depending on the $$$$ situation. basicly all i have planned for that at the moment is slammed on big bumpers and possibly some fat 15s

I like the stance of this Benny.

It's got a very sinister stance about it. Black, black window's, belly ached!!!

Good luck cleaning those wheels ;)

I'll be honest & say I've never been a fan of the badgeless grill's.
I reckon a single headlight badged grill would be a goer.

They are the rims that used to live on the gti..
17x7 replicas of Volk wheels by Rays engineering. :D
heaps of pics of the black one on those rims on here around the place.

They are possibly the best looking rims I've seen on a mk2. Up there or better than ATS Cups imo. Are they available in Australia?

Yea the 17s are available in aus... i know BSA does a version of theese rims too. I cant remember the brand that i have, but the BSA ones dont look as good.......hold up, i'll head under the house and battle the spiders n find out (they not on any car at the moment)..

No brand on them....I got them second hand. And there was a set on the black GTI before I scored it...They were bought by a mate locally to put on an AE82 sprinter and then he put em on the GTI when he had it. He held onto them to put on a soarer....... another friend has some on her CRX..tonnes of cars around Launceston have em. lol.

I'll have to see what more i can find...they did have stickers on them had "Ravs Engineering" in the same style as Rays Engineering. and "vork" instead of volk racing...

I'll prolly put them back on the silver one once i get rego on it....

FOUND EM!!!!!!!

I like the stance of this Benny.

It's got a very sinister stance about it. Black, black window's, belly ached!!!

Good luck cleaning those wheels ;)

Going back to plain old school in the looks department...
Cupla red fixed back recaros and a half cage... like something out of an early 90s PVW magazine. lol.

UPDATE. I've been very very slack. The Driver now has a 16v KR and is moving very slowly and all the plans have changed. "again"..
My car spending $$ were put on hold for a while due to a trip to Tokyo not long ago.

I'm going back to Japan in March and hopefully be working there by the end of next year.
So the outcome of all this will determine what happens to the cars.
The GTI stays...that is a dead cert. with the possibility of it comming to Japan if I end up staying for more than 2 years. ( golfs are actually very popular in Japan )

In the mean time I'm still doing a bit of work on both.
Since last time the GTI now has a carbon bonnet (thanks again Carl)
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/11/IMG_0010-2.jpg
and a few little tidy up bits. Door rubbers, hatch rubbers, new underlay,
and a good detail etc....

here is a few pics over the last few months.

My compomotives are currently off being detailed, so i'm riding on some horrid 15x7s..

and the driver now sits waiting some form of fueling......

All in all I plan to keep the GTI close to original, It's a classic car !!!!

I have been getting sick of looking in my rear vision mirror and seeing my hood lining sagging more and more evey day. So I decided to fix it.
Pulled the insides out of the car too due to doing a bit of a retrim over x-mas.

took all the grab bars, etc out to lower the hood lining shell and the trim just dropped, LOL. all the glue had given up and the only thing holding it to the hood shell was the grab handles and the mounting buttons.
the shell also has gotten brittle over the years and big chunks of it broke off :(... No problems tho, I will fiberglass and re enforce it and then set about getting the lining back on.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/12/IMG_1928-1.jpg

the lining its self is still in great cond, no marks or splits so I plan to reuse it.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/12/IMG_1929-1.jpg

and untill some of my new parts turn up i'll be going race style with a stripped interior.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/12/IMG_1930-1.jpg

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/12/IMG_1934-1.jpg

The enterior will be all black ...I have kept all the GTI specific parts so it can be taken back to original if need be at any stage.

Now has all black bumpers (no red gti strip) removed the bump strips and will be taking the arches off aswell.

then I will be adding some more dish to the compomotives.

OK! after a long while I'm back... Now Living in Japan with the GTI tucked up under my parent's house. I got in as much work to it as I could before leaving Aus.

I had to sell my other mk2 2 door the 16v and my AW11 mr2. But I decided to keep the GTI. I would never forgive myself if I sold it.
I'm now looking for another mk2 2 door here in Japan. They are actually very popular here! Mostly 4 door GLI but quite a few Imports made their way here over the years.

Here are some pics I took just before I left.

Hard to get parking room in Tokyo , let alone some where to play with cars... :(

Now looking at buying this, it's only 180000 yen so about 2g AUS.
The wife is happy, just have to go look and test drive.

Nice car mate. Just wondering how you secured your racing seats in?
sorry Russ been away for a while.
the seats are bolted to a modded mk1 seat base. They seemed to sit a little high untill I got used to it. the cobra seats I have have the bolt holes in the bottom.
so 2 braces were welded on the mk1 platforms and lined up the bolt holes.

So, I decided to come back for the silly season and spend some time with my car...um, Parents :P.....

It's now back on the 17in rims until I get new tyres for the Compomotives.

Thought I wouls share what I have been doing today if anyone might be interested in getting some extra room in their engine bay.
I have been running an RNN14 GTiR Pulsar Thermo fan for quite a long time on the GTI, but decided I would mount it in front of the Radiator to tidy the engine bay up a bit.

First of all, rip it's face off.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0232-1.jpg

RNN14 Fan should be the same as a normal N14 Pulsar fan, But i'm not sure.
This one came off my old GTi-R Pulsar. Spins very fast and is quite slim compared to the old MK2 Dog Kennel that was on it.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0233-1.jpg

Remove slam panel and Aux bits and pieces.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0234-1.jpg

Now, to be honest, I don't recall if I made these brackets, if they were Pulsar ones, or VW ones.....sorry, I mounted it ages ago. (on the rear side)

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0238-2.jpg

Yes, it's dirty in there, I'm getting there slowly :P

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0239-1.jpg

Does involve some very slight notching or slight bending of the front slam upright, about 10mm to clear the Thermo Brace.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0242-1.jpg

Remount the horn a little lower behind the bumper.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0244-1.jpg

And, Pretty much back together.. Front lip etc to go back on when I finish cleaning up.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_02471-1.jpg

******** Remember you have to check the polarity of the fan!!
If its on the engine side it will draw air through, swap polarity to make it push air through the radiator.
Best way to check what way it is going is to hold a sheet of paper over the radiator and see if its blowing the air through and not sucking the paper to the radiator.

Cheers,
Other bits n things to come.
