View Full Version : Dont buy a Carbon Steel GTI

My Dealer rang me today and invited me around to check out their new Carbon Steel Demo GTI, just like I had ordered. I had never seen one in the flesh and only went off a few posts here a recommendation from the Dealer. Originally was going to order a Pearl Black GTI. :brutal:

Just warning everyone . . . DONT DO IT , dont buy a Carbon Steel GTI

because . . . . .

I want to be one of the only people in OZ to own one . . .

Man . . . what a FANTASTIC colour. Photos DO NOT do it justice.

You have to see one up close to appreciate what it looks like.

Dont get me wrong, to each their own and that sort of thing, White looks good, especially with the Red Brakes, Black just looks sweet, and Red, well . . . Red Cars just go fast . . . but , for me . . . decision was spot on.

EXTREMEMLY happy with the Colour Choice.

Just the agonising wait for delivery . . . May/June :(

The wait will be SO worth it

Will post a couple of pics when I work out how.

I saw this thread and my heart raced a little bit. I thought it was all going to be a doom and gloom thread about how it looks worse in real life or the quality is not as good and that I've made the biggest mistake of my life cause everyone is raving about Candy White.

I'm so glad it wasn't

flappa

But that wouldn't be nearly as much fun would it:P

I gather you haven't seen one in the flesh ?

I seriously, seriously doubt you'll be disappointed.

Nope, I had to go solely off the photos, but I knew it was the colour I wanted! Hopefully I should get it this week!

Nah, I've also seen a carbon steel in person and it looks great. It's a really cool colour, almost black, but not your regular grey either.

I agree - you are too late. Although mine is being born shortly, my dealer had the foresight to order one for their demo - as all other colours were same as previous (or close enough to it).

Excellent choice. Carbon Steel is the new black, so as to speak.

I had the black and CSG next to each other when I purchased my GTI.

IMO the CSG was the clear winner. I've had my doubts but in the end, the CSG is unique.

But that may not matter if I go with the R.... lol. :)

Here's a few pictures i've saved online which show the different color/tones of CSG.

Nice choice - it is a subtle twist on black.

Now to sell the GT so i can pay for the damn thing.

I nearly ordered CS too, came very close but what put me off in the end was i saw a dirty/dusty one. Ive had my black vehicle already and didnt want to go thru that again so I went for white this time instead. Where I park my car is very dusty and the White will help hide it a little.

Virgin white does look good but so many cars have that colour.
Plus my current ride was virgin white before it got all dirty.

Hahaha, i'll leave the interpretation up to you.

White does tend to hide the dust/swirls easier though.
But it just seems so plain next to other colours.
I saw a blue and a white tig together at the traffic lights and i instantly changed my mind from white to blue for my order.

This:

Candy white > Carbon steel! :D

Fixed it for you:

Candy white > Reflex silver :P
(and so it goes).

Every man and his dog has a silver car, been over done a bit (but always looks nice esp in the MK5 Pirellis).

I'd prob go for CW or carbon steel. UG can look a bit dull/flat if not kept clean.

DBP is still the best though.

Corey_R
24-02-2010, 03:35 PM
Actually G-Rig, White is still the #1 car selected colour out there. Silver is #2. So arguing over whether white or silver is better based on its commonness is a bit meh... but as has been said in other threads, the 'colour range' of the VWs in this country sucks. The GTI only has a single ACTUAL colour - red. Then 4 tones of grey! (white, silver, darkish grey (carbon steel), black) :(

G-rig
24-02-2010, 03:37 PM
Yeah I should have said I prefer white or CS to silver on a Golf.

Happy? :)

The problem is that when it rains here, 3 of those 4 non-colours blend into the colour of the road and make it more likely for the multitudes of incompetent drivers to not see you and run into your car.

LOL!! White?? You may find that you will see the dust more.. get reflex silver i kid you not its the best colour to hide dirt etc.. LUV IT !!

G-rig
24-02-2010, 04:14 PM
White may show as much dust but doesn't look as bad as the dark metalic cars lose their lustre a bit and look crappy.

Easiest thing is just wash it once a week.

Carbon Steel/Black does look great when it is clean.

Beaker
24-02-2010, 04:56 PM
Hey Flappa, I agree it looks awesome, but having owned a dark grey/black car,I predict you'll be over it within a year. Keeping them clean just plain sucks. I had to wash mine weekly to keep it looking respectable. Thats ok if your car is your life, but I'm guessing you, like me, have better things to do.

Does look hot though!

I just walked to the local dealer near where i work and I saw a white GTI with the 18inch detroits and leather..and i must say it looked stunning!!

You have to have the 18's!

I still love my Carbon steel though!! I just havent seen one that is going to look like mine in real life yet :(

I drove past a CS w 18's last Saturday and it was amazing.. If I didn't go black, CS would have been next. It just glistened as it drove through Albert Park (owner, if you're here, please acknowledge)... good line definition on the body..

You have to have the 18's!

When i spoke to a dealer just now, he said exactly the same thing - that it just finishes off the GTI. I tend to agree.

The red has it by a hair over carbon steel at the moment.

Haha yeah.. the wheels really makes it! The 17's are such a let down.. If I could only get one option on this car it would be 18" detroits!

Goodluck with yours!

The CS I had a look at had the 18's , Bi Xenon , and ACC , (not that that matters looks wise) , only difference was the Leather Interior.

Basically identical , bar the leather , to my order

Had my carbon steel for a week now and absolutely love it. The co;our in the brochure doesn't do it justice. Previously had a Black Mk 5 but this is unlike any carbon steel I've seen before - quite dark and almost black at times and quite stunning.
She's in Fhrx Studios having some serious sound modifications completed and not expected back until the weekend. Can't wait!

G-rig

Carbon Steel is a pretty hot new flavor. Probably a bit easier to keep clean than black, would still show scratches and dints though but most cars would. Saw a CW mk6, also stunning and very clean with the 18" detroits. That is one of the worthwhile options, the 17" look too small on the MK6 with the heavy looking front end/overhang.

Ps. Car should sound heaps better after FHRX, they do good work.
