Hi everyone,

My name's Chris and hail from WA, I'm heading down the path of the Golf R and thought it was time I joined, heard about the site from Swallowtail in the MPS forum.

I have a Mazda 6 MPS which is now 3 years old and my wife has a VW Jetta 2.0 TFSI coming up to 3 1/2 years old. So whilst she is happy with her's and will probably wait for the MK VI Jetta or Golf CC (if we ever see it) I think I need a Golf R.

And a pic of both together!

Anyway nice looking forum (been browsing as guest for sometime) look forward to learning more about VW's
Cheers
Chris

To R or not to R, that is the question???

Welcome aboard Chris

The R is a great choice, but you might want to take a peak at an Audi S3 as well, more expensive, but being discounted a lot right now

Thanks gareth, yeah going to wait and see what the R will sell for before I decide, may have to test drive an S3 in the meantime :D

Chris, you're just round the corner from me. If you're still keen on the Golf R I'd suggest you give Dermot Munro a call at Wangara VW and ask him when they're due in. You could arrange a test drive. It's going to be a really tough call though choosing between the Audi S3 and Golf R.

hi chris, i haven't driven an S3, but i did have the A3 diesel tiptronic while the allroad was in for a service & i was impressed with how much go it had for the 125kW. so imagine what the S line would do.

I think you need one too, Chris.

I'm in South Perth, let me know if you want a blat in my tuned pirelli gti.
Same engine/turbo as the new R (and basicaly the s3), albeit in a more detuned state from the factory (yes, minus awd too)

At any rate it will give you an indicator of what a few more $k in the aftermarket will give you in terms of performance, even though you'd expect more from the R.

Oh, and welcome :)

Hey guys thanks for the welcomes, been a little while since I dropped in here, still reading lots about the 'R' and still keen! Will most likely wait till they're here and test one first before deciding, thanks for the offer tinto may take you up on it some time :) On a different note I took an R36 Wagon for a test drive recently as I'm not 100% if I need the extra space yet, it went well for 1700kg beast and that V6 engine note is pure p*rn! but kinda thinking the lighter Golf R may be what I need. Audi S3 optioned up is pushing my budget a bit and I'm not too keen on the styling (seriously!) I think the Golf R looks tougher.

Anyways guys thanks for the advice, will keep you posted as to what I eventually end up with!
Cheers
Chris

LOL thanks Gareth for the unofficial use of your quote! I'll take it down when the R has been signed for :p

Update, still considering an R, though am now looking at a couple of low km R32's!

Two reasons 1. they will be substantially less than an R and 2. I think I've fallen for the exhaust note :)

the note of the R32 is great, but I think everyting else (apart from cost) about the R would be better - handling, performance and tuneability

the R32 note is addictive, I went for a vr6 motor as you can enjoy the sound and smoothness, even when your not really hard on the throttle :)

Update :)

Test drove and ordered an R today, got a good price so I'm happy!

Ordered a Rising Blue 5dr DSG with 19" Talladega in Silver, was contemplating the black wheels but thought the silver wheels looked better in the real life, the black didn't do it for me! Expected delivery is late November which suits me fine.

Look forward to catching up with the WA crew at the next meet/cruise

did ya get the sexy seats?

Considered it, but I liked the standard seats in leather better. It was tempting though!

Congrats mate. I had a quick peak inside the two at JH on Wednesday night before the meeting. I was there about 6:30. Young guy & his g/f looked like they had just signed up for one - big smiles. Was that you??? :) Would have been just before this post!

I'll be looking out for Rising Blue Golf R zipping around Manning in November. The wait must be killing you.

The wait is a little bit frustrating, though gives me time to get the MPS ready to sell and I'm very busy for the next 3 months with work so it's not too bad really! (says he, who looks at 'R' pics before going to bed) :happyfrownnono:

Hi Shakespeare, I see you're moving on from the MPS. I sold mine to a guy in SA and bought an Audi S4. I still miss the MPS but the Euro class bug hits hard!

I've heard from Andre and Dan (they bought some of your MPS bits) that your S4 is one fine ride!

At times I think I'll miss the MPS but I'll have to wait till I actually have the R to confirm that, though since I've demodded it I miss the tightness of the handling with the coilovers and the induction noises with the intake :(

I've finally got my R, so I'm not really a newbie anymore but thought I'd throw up an update :D

Nice, Shakespeare, very nice. Will you be taking it to the Dub Meet on the 5th? I'll do my best to be there, so I'll apologise in advance for drooling all over you car. :)

Lack of updates in this thread, that's very naughty of me.... unfortunately....

Hi all, sadly on the weekend the R was involved in an unfortunate round a bout incident and could end up a write off (still waiting for insurance to call me re: assessment) Basically going through a round a bout near home a white Magna approaching from my left failed to give way to me and impacted my left side sending me into a spin, the Magna still moving forward impacted my right side sending me back the other direction and I finished up into a limestone wall. I'm ok apart from some muscle stiffness however the R isn't. Anyway thought I'd share the pics for those interested and now to think what to get next!

That is one heck of a travesty!! Very sorry to see that happen to a well loved Dub.

Hope the Magna owner was well insured - Property damage and an R to replace as I'd assume that back wheel being skewy would spell a write-off

Very sad to see this happen to such an awesome looking car.
I hope you are okay.
Still trying to figure out how people manage to drive through a roundabout at speed and not give way to others.
Hope the other driver has insurance and you get a brand new car.

Sorry to see these pics (again) Chris, only just seen the update on here. Have you heard back from the assessors yet? Hope you're back on the road soon mate :)

the problem with those pics Chris is it suggests that anyone arriving after the incident would just see a hot little VW parked in a fence and assume you were being a hoon and lost it :(
