Righto. Some may say I am mentally impaired, but in my eyes the mk1 is made for targa rallying, and I love competing. There are too many in the Porsche/Subarishi brigade hogging these events so it's time to get in.
This is the deal.

Take the pictured Mk1, strip it, race prep it, make it look like a proper 1976 GTI, run the proper Heron GTI 1600 (to stay competitive in the class), and be ready to compete in TargaWest 2012.

As I'm currently more focused on the mk2 conversion i'll just post these pics for now...

The aim isn't to make a squeaky clean perfect show car. This car is fairly rough so it will make a perfect race car with some cleaning up.

hope you enjoy!

Awesome! Are the regs tight on what you can enter?

I agree about the subishi/ Porsche overload.
Soon it will just be gtr35 and evos.

Yes and no. It's a little complicated, but basically you can't enter a car with an engine that wasn't originally offered or homoligated on that model (unless you apply for the 'grandfather clause' a-la John Caruso's 350 Chev powered Jaguar).

Obviously this makes my 1.8t mk2 void:frown:

I picked the '76 spec because it is the original and my favourite, and running the 1.6 keeps me in the smaller classes and the earlier year keeps it out of the way of the later more modern stuff to an extent.

You can modify but again depending on what you do, it can force you to go up to categories with cars that will rape it.

I wont be competing in full competition class yet, just the challenge class.

All the rules and stuff can be found on the CAMS website.

Cheers,
Wade

Yes you're mental but obviously talented with the spanners

Could even have a 1.6 16v as these were sold in France...

Great idea!

Saying i'm talented with the spanners might be a bit optimistic!! Hopefully my talents will grow while doing this project.

I think Luke (volksee77) is going for the 16v for his car. I'm trying to keep mine cheaper and simple:cool:

Thanks for the encouragement fellas!

dear oh dear Grant, you are exactly where i was three years ago and i tell you what it is a huge mountain to climb. That said since i have done this before i can give you a hand when i'm back from the mines if you are keen. I finally have the Golf 16s FIA homologation paper work so a mk1 can use a 16v motor up to 1.79L under Cams rulings and still remain in the same class as a 8v heron gti motor if you are keen? I have a heap of good mk1 2 door parts too in my workshop and some good contacts for Golf rally gear

Wade, I'm a bit confused I think youve made a serious error.

The title should be reading:

Mission: '76 Mk1 GTI replica TargaWest 2010

Grant??! It's Wade.:stupid: Hahahaha!

Yea man I have a lot of work to do!

First time out i'll stick with the Heron lump, and run some simple mods just to get my feet back in the water and my skills back up. Also trying to keep the budget modest.

Speaking of Grant, he's agreed to co-drive with me. He's brave!!

As far as the car goes, well, I've removed the wiring, brake lines and booster and in the process found a few more rust holes. Nothing major though and i'm actually fairly surprised at how little rust there is overall so far.

Pics coming soon.

Jeez its been a while here!
I'm actually considering something different for this race car. Not sure whether to either make a speed event sprint series car, improved street/production or stick with targa...
I may even palm it off in favour of a karting venture:?
The main reason is i have no space, i have another blue mk1 i wanna restore, and i'm thinking about restoring a 1968 Audi Super 90.
Hmmm, decisions decisions:headscratch:

hmm i reckon i know someone crazy enough to take on another mk1 tarmac build.

Dude, if you promise to use it and not scrap it, come and pick it up!! I've got spares to go with it too.
I'll let you finish building it and then i'll buy it back once you've done the hard work haha!

But seriously...

I have the motivation yes but the time no, it would sit for at least a year before i find the time to start, i've got a 60% 16V still on the go if ever i get a day to have a go

OK guys. I think i'm gonna call it on this build. Too much going on at once, and when i think about wanting to race, i want to race on a circuit against other drivers.
To do this relatively cheaply it makes far more sense to palm this build off and get into some superkarting at club level. Plus I have NO space left and karts are nice and small!
So, who wants a mk1 2-door shell with a butload of new and used spares??

This project car will be going up in the for sale section soon. PM me now if you want to make offers... :)

Unfortunately, this project is going to end up in heap of chopped metal tomorrow, so thats about it for this short lived "build". Admittedly the bodywork was pretty biffed anyway.
OVER & OUT.
