That will upset Volvo and Mercedes! Seriously, safety is a high priority for me when choosing a car. I'm happy.

More good news, I keep hearing better and better things about it.

It is interesting that the only other car to come close to the Golf's adult protection level (97%) was the Holden (nee Chev, nee Daewoo) Cruze on 96%. It matches the Golf for Child and Safety Assist ratings, so it seems that the Cruze missed a top five spot only because of its relatively poor pedestrain safety rating (34%).

Its not surprising the Cruze is up there with thee best. An engineering friend who works for GM told me that globally GM has spent 6 billion dollars developing the Cruze platform which is indicative of how seriously they take that class of car these days. It's a pity the Cruze model we get here gets the Korean engineered engine options.

Yes, the engines/transmissions are the weak point in the Cruze, or perhaps they aren't that bad compared to all the other "normal" cars. It's just that VW have not only moved the goal posts, they are now playing in a different field. 118TSI DSG...a 118kW engine with a brilliant auto that gets 6.2L/100km from a spacious 1400kg hatch!!!
