View Full Version : Our New Jetta's Mini Build Thread
Silver dub

Well as of last week we have a new VW in the family.
It was time to trade in the VZ Commodore and take ownership of a Demo 2009 jetta FSI in blue graphite with 1800kms on the clock.
So i thought been a new car and having some plans for it then i would have a crack at a build thread, although it will probably be more of a mini build thread as it is my partners every driver so we don't want to go over the top on it (I'll leave that to the bora later down the track".
So here are some photo's just after we arrived home,
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4277972379_56ddb7fe1b-1.jpg
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4277927455_06772a26a4-1.jpg
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4278719386_1194f7177b-1.jpg
Now when we first saw it in the yard my first thought's were "Damm that is way to high and needs some bigger wheels"!
So been that it is her everyday driver we decided a set of OEM 18's were in need.
So that been said when we started to negotiate with the dealer one of the requirements was to get an new set of rims put in the boot to take home for later.
So we walked over to the rim stand and chose some new 18's for the Jetta which were now to be included in the sale of the car.
I never realized just how big the boot was in a jetta until i fitted 4 18's in boxes in the boot without any problems and space left over,
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4277985459_2b9da4cdb9-1.jpg
Now after a couple of days of research on the forums and some helpful words from Tim at Dub Addiction and some other members i decided it was time to purchase some H&R springs.
As we didn't want to go to over the top, our thoughts were to go with a 30mm sport springs. As much as we would have loved to have gone a 50mm spring with matching shocks or even as far as a set of coilovers but when you purchase a house and try to modify 2 vw's you have to know when to control yourself.
So after ringing around and getting some prices i was about to order them when i read that i can get H&R from GTI Dave.
So a few PM's later and a great deal he had himself a sale.
"BIG SHOUT OUT" to Gti Dave for all his help and organizing to have these sent to me all whilst he was on his way to America.
Ok, so the next step is to get take off all the stuff on the car that we don't want to be on it.

So first thing on the checklist was to take of the dealer number frames,
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4305469531_00ab7fccd1-1.jpg
Been that dealers don't put much attention into putting number plates on, I decided i should get some rubber washes to go behind the plates so as not to scratch that new shinny chrome grille before fitting the plates back on.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4305469871_fe4a5e3e32-1.jpg
Some new screws i had left over from the bora were also used to hold these suckers on.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4278734072_f5514666b9-1.jpg
Now these plates will not be a permanent fixture as some nice euro plates are on the "To get List".
Next step was to take off all the dealer stickers for a cleaner look,
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/4278735742_d226a574dd-1.jpg
And then the only other thing i could do to personalize the car the day we go it was to fit some nice shinny valve caps which i also had lying around,

nice mate!
how does she find the Jetta compared to the VZ?
should be a nice clean OEM + look (dont forget to de-badge it!) :)

That screw is awfully close to the lettering on your licence plate! Should be fine though as it's not actually going through the lettering. Have you thought about painting the screw white to match in with the rest of the plate?
Also, when you do get some euro plates, I suggest you also get the standard plate holders from VicRoads.

Jetta badge on the boot is next to be a gone, still deciding if I should do anything with the front a rear vw badges or if I should leave them, I will post up our to do list on my smoko break.
Silver dub
27-01-2010, 09:37 AM
So this is the do list at the moment although I'm sure it will get bigger.
OEM 18's
H&R 35mm springs
Tinted windows
Debadge jetta badge on rear
Upgrade to rear valance with exhaust cut out
Sports exhaust system
Upgrade to Black headlights (oem hella)
Upgrade taillights (unsure what way to go yet)
Upgrade number plate globes
New stereo after she blows the speakers eventually
Euro plates
Possibly a new grille when we find one we like
Headlight eyelids
Now I just have to try and stick to the list and not go overboard,
"famous last words"

except for the eyelids, they look $hit on the Jetta ;)

Very nice looking Jetta, how does it compare to your Bora ?
They will be close freinds, like a father and son relationship...lol.
Is it the 6 speed manual,or tiptronic ???
Will be a great change from the Commodore ???
Congratulations on it,and enjoy.

They seem very similar power wise, both 2.0 litre.
The bora is 5sp man and the jetta is 6 sp man.
I absoultly love having the extra gear in the jetta.
It's her first manual car and she's loving every bit of it.
From the first time she drove the bora she said to me " I want a vw".
Also were saving around $30 per week on fuel compared to the commodore.
They are very much like father and son because the bora sits so low beside it in the garage, but I'm hoping the H&R's arrive this week.
One thing I love about the bora over the jetta is the black interior

Which means i can get some tyres for the 18's then send it 35mm lower to the ground.

Originally i was quoted nearly $500 and i was going to have to drive about an hour and a half to pick them up.

Well quick update,
I have sold the 16" wheels and tyres which are now funding the 18" tyres.
Whilst I'm waiting on the tyres to come in stock the jetta will be sitting pretty on some 17" Audi S-line wheels (Thanks DAD).
Will post pics when i throw them on, They will sit out nice a flush with the guards thanks to the offset.
So as i will be spending this saturday making the bora look all spiffy for SEDF on sunday, the jetta will have to stay stock height for another week.
Hopefully i can get the springs done next weekend and tyres done on the monday after.
Plans sound good mate.
Should definitely get a primered Golf GT grill so you can colour match it, makes it looks so much better than the crome. While you're there, get some GLI side skirts and rear valance. They've got some good headlights on TM Tuning and as for the tail lights, let me know with what you go for. I've been looking for a tasteful set for a very long time now without finding anything.
Sounds like I'm talking to myself about 6 months ago :P Good luck with it all
Ps. Found these (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-MK5-Jetta-Black-LED-Tail-Light-Full-Set-Smoked-Euro_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem439cbd730cQQitemZ2 90392470284QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAcc essories) lights on eBay. I wouldn't mind them but it appears to be for LHD models only. That and the indicators might flash red instead of amber (unforunately illegal here).

So the 16's have been removed and cleaned for their new owner,
I'm borrowing dad's 17" Audi S-Line wheels for the week whilst we wait for the 18" tyres to arrive, hopefully by the end of the week.
Couple of photos i shot after a clean and i know it looks like a monster truck, i already have the springs and they are going in once the 18's go on.

We brought the wheels when we purchased the car.
I told them i wanted the 18's but to supply rims only as a family friend of ours has a tyre shop.
It does suprise me that not alot of people have them,

I will have to take a trip to my folks house though to get some line as all my rods are still there. Still havn't brought them to our new place.

So i spoke to my dad today and he's got a free hoist tomorrow arvo so i can finally install the H&R's.
He's going to hang back and help me install them after work, SWEET!

Well the jetta is spending the night on the hoist.
Rear springs are in and the front left is all back together in the car, we just need to tighten all our bolts back up.
We run into a problem whilst doing the front though (Not having a big enough spline torx bit), so i'm sourcing one of them tomorrow so we can finish.
I'm hoping we might be able to get it all finish tomorrow night.

Silver dub
18-02-2010, 07:37 AM
You can run the h&r's with standard shocks as they are only 35mm drop,
I did want to go lower but now we have the 18's it will have a nice even gap all the way round only going 35mm.
Any lower than that an we would have had to of replaced shocks ect.
A 15mm spring would still lol to high IMO, def go for a 35mm spring.
I should have it finished tonight or if not tommorow night so I will post before and after shots with measurments once ccomplete.

We managed to get a bit more done tonight, but did run into some problems.
Here's some quick snaps

Rear springs in and ready to go
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/02/4367660128_75463b6485-1.jpg
We ran into problems with the front right.
As the drive shaft is longer on the right side, we didn't have as much leverage down as we did on the left side. So we had to disconnect the drive shaft to be able to lower the disc to get the bottom end of the shock out.
We had another few hiccups but got there eventually.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/02/4367662464_6fbc5288c7-1.jpg

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/02/4367664530_411ee215bc-1.jpg
So it should hit the ground tomorrow arvo once we do a final inspection of all of our nuts and bolts.

Next on the list will be clean up the rear with the removal of the rear jetta badge.
After that will be the new front lower grilles,
When we brought the car the front left lower grille was not sitting right,
It ended up that someone had obviously forced it in and broken some tabs and taken a chunk out of the side of it.
So i told them i wanted it replaced, a few days later they sent a new one in the mail but it was different to the one on the car.
It was not blanked of on the back like the ones that came on the car , it had more open to let air flow through, but it didn't match the other side so after a few phone calls with the guy in parts i managed to get them to send me another new one for the other side so they would match (At their Cost, not mine:banana:)
Ended up that vw had updated the grilles since our model and no longer made the ones that came on ours.
So i am now thinking i may play around with the original ones that are coming off and see if i can do anything special with them.
Looks great - nicely done :) Ride all good?

Totally different car to drive now,
Car feels alot more resposive and takes corners without feeling like your in a boat.
I measured the rear gap before and after lowering.
it was 65mm from the top of the tyre to the guard before hand and the next day it measured 25 mm.
So they are 35mm lowering springs but went to 40mm by the next day, not to mention the fact that i reckon they will probably settle another mabye 5mm,
so I'm really happy with the end product,
team_v
26-02-2010, 06:57 AM

great build thread to date! I have been thinking about a similiar project as the wifes car is going to be replaced after her Maternity Leave... Might go the Jetta 5 or Wagon 6 options.. From what I have read, the Wagon has Jetta 5 underpinnings, so your H&R springs sound like the perfect option!

We were originally looking at a mk6 118 TSI but the wait was going to be too long to get it as it was a custom order.
We then started looking at the mk6 wagon seen as though it would be around the same waiting time as the 118 TSI.
So we jumped in the car earl one morning to do the rounds to as many vw dealerships we could.
It just so happened that we spotted the jetta at the first yard and it was parked in the staff parking, so i went and asked if it was for sale and it was.
So it all kind of just fell into place for us,
just without the long wait for a new one.
Probably just small mods now,
rear valance (with exhaust cut out)
exhaust
tinted windows
euro plates
upgraded stereo
upgrade globes
install the newer front lower grilles
sure to think of alot more as I go
Is the valance just the TFSI 118 one?
I've been looking around for replacement or larger (GTI size) brake rotors/calipers etc and at the same time was looking for black, projector or projector + xenon headlights.
I guess the better halogen globes are a practical upgrade, without the expense and rice-factor of overdoing the Jetta upgrade.
It would be nice if there was a dual-pipe exhaust option, kind of like the Honda Accord Euro and the MkVI GTI. More aesthetic than practical, again! :emo_baghead:
Silver dub
27-02-2010, 07:21 PM
A Dual exhaust would be nice but a little thing by the name of "fuel tank" brings thoughts like that to an end.

Debadging the back is very easy, just get a hairdryer and a old plastic card
Jetta owners - have you ever wanted slightly bigger brakes?
I asked a question in the Wanted section as I'm seeking advice OR seeking GTI size brakes.
ECS is offering 1/3 off its 312mm rotors & adaptor mounts, to allow you to run your original calipers/pads etc with new, 312mm, zinc coated rotors. All without changing the calipers/pads or bleeding the brakes.
Thus it's a halfway-house upgrade but is a low cost cosmetic upgrade if nothing else.
http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=41650
This could be something for anyone who has 17-18" spoked wheels and is looking for a quick, low cost mini upgrade.
Sorry to hijack; I would be interested if you'd consider such an upgrade, considering you've done some tasteful mods to date. :)
Cheers,
Bizi

Debadging the back is very easy, just get a hairdryer and a old plastic card
Silver Dub is pretty much king at debadging, think fishing line is his favourite method.
Do you think it lowered the car more then what it was rated to because it’s a brand new car?
I've read about people installing lowering springs in their car and not getting the 35mm it suggested because their car is already sagging as it’s old and has done 200,000km etc on hte orginal suspension.
Maybe yours is the opposite, and the drop is what they except on a car with 60,000km or something? Either way, can’t complain about bonus lowness!

I wont use plastic cards etc!
They will only cause scratches.

After a quick clay block, paint cleaner and then a wax to finish off this is the end product,

The only problem now is that i have realized just how bad the rest of the car feels.
So the jetta will be getting a major detail soon.

That was one if the first things I didn't like when we brought the car,
But I have to agree with maca, it's grown on me and now like it.
Not to mention the fact that when need to use the high intensity light (which in winter we get alot of fog down here) it would blind any one behind me.

You think that's necessary? I reckon having it adds to the "euro" of it.
To me it just ruins the mirror image view of the car.
Before the badge was there so it wasn't mirored but now the only thing that is different is the red circle so you tend to see it more and focus on it.
Not my car though so it's up to you what you do with it.

Time for an update.
So now that the bora has gone i can now pout all of my focus onto jetta.
The other week i ordered some euro plates which arrived last week damaged, NOT HAPPY!
So they were sent back and hopefully we should get some replacements shortly.
I have also placed a nice sized order with carareproducts which should be arriving soon.
I've got my work cut out for me once it arrives.

So We are still fighting it out with Australia post to get the damaged plates replaced.
Completely over it now, so I'm really throwing my weight at them now.
Also received my car care products, it was like Christmas. Now I'm just waiting for the weather to clear up yo go hog on it, also trying to finish bits and pieces on the garage so I have room to do it

Ok so a quick update,
The jetta is now spending a short stint at VW to have the gearbox pulled apart.
We started to notice 2nd gear was starting to grind whilst selecting the gear so its in to have the syncros replaced after the first gearbox oil change failed to fix the problem.
So our temporary driver is an 06 TDI golf

So the latest update is that the we are picking up the jetta tomorrow morning, yay.
The car has now been at VW for 3 weeks and i'm NOT A VERY HAPPY MAN!
I will fill you all in on the whole scenario in the next few days but its at the point now that i have been talking to a Customer care representative to try and sort all of this out.
I have been at boiling point the last few weeks and i'm thinking its nearly time to name and shame.
Anyway lets just hope the problem is resolved when we pick the car up tommorow and to test it we will be making a day drip to phillip island to blow out the cobwebs.

Thanks Anthony, really looking forward to driving it again.
Its amazing after not having it for 3 weeks just how much you miss not driving your own car.
For example we have missed not having the sunroof open on a sunny day, the lowered suspension and bigger wheels for a sportier ride,
The bigger boot, headlights that are actually aimed correctly, unlike the loan car that had headlights aimed about 5 meters in front and down at the road.
So should be good!

So today i got up at about 7:30 and decided i better install the RCD500 head unit.
Very easy to install thanks to the RCD500 DIY removal on this forum, although i did learn as i was putting it back together that before you get ahead and start the next step make sure you finish the previous one.
Had to pull a few trim pieces back out after forgetting 2 screws.... all good now.
The car came back from the dealer covered in bird droppings and all kinds of stuff as i asked the dealer not to wash the car as i like to do it myself, so i spent a few hours cleaning it today and took some quick snaps.

Not a 100% sure.
I'm just not sure where i want to go at the moment.
I'd love to get my hands on a MK6 Golf R, MK6 GTI or an MK5 R32 but our car has only done approx. 24,000kms so it seems like such a waste to think of selling it yet.
Ideally i'd love to hang on to it till about 70,000 kms then update but i just have such an urge for an R or something similar at the moment, Damn temptation!
We need to finish the house renovation first and sell it, then i can buy another vw and keep the jetta and have use for both sets of my euro plates but unfortunately if i buy another VW i have to put my future project car on the back burner for even longer (67 Fastback Mustang) damn i wish i was rich!!!!!!!!!!

Very nice car mate. Also she is screaming for darkest legal tint :)
I've always had darkest legal tint on all of my cars but for some reason i can't decide if i want to or not on the jetta.
A few times i've been walking back to the car whilst parked down the street and from a distance i actually think without the tint it looks quit clean and crisp having the clear windows.
Also the colour is the other thing. If it was white, silver or black i would have tinted it the day i got it as i think it just really suits those colours.
But i'm keen to hear what you all think.

So I'm on the hunt for a nice set of new rims now, hopefully some 19's with better offset so they poke and give me more lows!!!!!!!

My 19's are +45, which give that more aggressive poke you're after i think..to be honest my front is almost poking out too far, so i wouldn't suggest going any further that that with offset.

The photos make the rear look higher but when you stand beside the car it looks the opposite.
Hence the reason I was worried it was looking like a sick commodore. I'll wait and get some feedback after a few people have seen it at nats as to wheather I need to raise or lower the rear to make it look more even.
Nice bro, good stance how it is! Pretty low for static
Actually the rear could come down a little bit, depends how u want it though, the guards are level but the chassis looks higher at the rear true? Looking tuff though either way

Five spokes are very easy to keep clean mate, It's just so easy to keep the inside of them looking clean also.
My fiancee and i both wanted plates that were similar and as i already had V VW 800 we thought V VW 900 look very similar and also even numbers look a bit more custom. ( I got 800 as 8 is my lucky number and i could not get 008)

HA, looks like you have caught the jetta bug that seems to be going around, you won't regret it.
Have you actually seen in the boot of a jetta? They are very deeseving, the boot is huge.
We had a vz commodore before our jetta and the boot was tiny compared to the jetta.

think the missus has caught the bug, im still undecided, never had a sedan in my life of owning cars so its an odd thing for me to consider, would be handy for the weekends away though. and im liking the specs on them option wise for the cost. also means the air ride wont take up so much of the boot.

I have owned 4 booted Golfs, also known as Jetta ...lol...over the years, and actually prefer it to the Golf,as the boot IS massive,I think the handling is slightly better,it is more upmarket, and is superb value for money.
Also better looking IMHO...

So the jetta has scored itself a new set of summer shoes.
I won't be posting pics of what our new score is yet as i need to have the current rubber stripped so they can be test fitted.
Once I've made sure they will work then I'll choose some tyres and get them ordered whilst there off getting a few touch ups.
I will however be posting teaser shots once they are test fitted without rubber, so stay tuned.

My other two tyres arrived today, sweeeeet.
I have a little hiccup that i need to address before they go on and that is my hubrings.
I ordered some aluminium ones and i thought it was all sweet until i went to test fit the rim tonight to find out that they hand out the back too much and prevent the rim from sitting flat on the hub.
In other words when i push the wheel on until the hub ring hits the hub i still have a 1mm or so gap around the outer edge between mu wheel and hub.
I think it's due to the hub rings having to much meat on them on the chamfer.
Sooooooo i have the wheels booked in on saturday morning to have the tyres mounted so tommorow i'm going to ring around some tyre shops to find someone that has them in the size i need.
Will be getting new ones rather than re-maching the current ones as i'm not 100% happy with the guality "they are really brittle".
So if all goes well i will have these on the car by saturday arvo!!!!!!!!!!!

I have in my possesion a genuine primed jetta rear valance with exhaust cutouts, brand new in packaging still. i bought a complete jetta bodykit for my golf but all im stealing if the front lip and side skirts:)
if you want to buy the rear lip from me PM me :)
So this is the do list at the moment although I'm sure it will get bigger.
OEM 18's
H&R 35mm springs
Tinted windows
Debadge jetta badge on rear
Upgrade to rear valance with exhaust cut out
Sports exhaust system
Upgrade to Black headlights (oem hella)
Upgrade taillights (unsure what way to go yet)
Upgrade number plate globes
New stereo after she blows the speakers eventually
Euro plates
Possibly a new grille when we find one we like
Headlight eyelids
Now I just have to try and stick to the list and not go overboard,

Thanks for the offer but I have changed my mind regarding the exhaust and valance. I now prefer the nice even look of the back of the car without the tips showing on one side.
Also too I'm hoping to upgrade the car in the near future so I'm not doing a lot of the small modifications that I wanted to in the beginning.

Paid a visit to Bob Jane at 8AM this morning, tyres were mounted on the rims and balanced within 20min of arriving.......Thats service!
So then i packed them in the back of the car and headed home to spend some time mounting them up and adjusting coilovers to try and get it to sit right.....I was amazed how much i had to raise the rear to get clearance of the back tyres so i would have no scrubbing issues.
Took the car for a long drive to find out once i got home that it's settled a bit out of level in the rear and one tyres has been scrubbing a whilst the other has to much gap, so tomorrow morning the rears will be back off for some final tweaking.
I borrowed dads SLR camera and took some shots on the way home before i lost to much light only to find out i can load them on my computer without his software.
I will pay dad a visit tomorrow and get them put on a memory stick and upload them but in the mean time i did get some shots of the tyre stretch before they were mounted up.
Here is the front stretch

Thanks heaps guys, i'm really wrapped with how they look on the car.
I got jess to drive it around the block once i finished just so i could see how it looked rolling.
I knew there would be a few comments regarding ride height, lol.
When i put the wheels on and dropped it of the jacks it was perfect fitment, i couldn't even get a finger between the guard and the arch but that unfortunately that led to problems.
I wanted to turn the car around in the garage so i could do the left hand side tyres due to having more room on that side of my shed but it involved driving the car out my driveway and turning around on the street("Should be no stress, flat driveway and about and inch raise just over the grass nature strip") ummmm...............FAIL!
I had not a chance in hell of getting out due tyres scrubbing inside the guards, so i drove it very slowly back up the driveway only to remove 1 alphard rear wheel and 1 karthoum rear wheels just so i could raise the coils by 10mm to be able to turn the freaking car around.........ha.
So as it stand i cant really go any lower "for the time being" due to the roads and driveways jess has to drive in to get to and from work, STUPID PENINSULA LINK ROADWORKS!
I am now contemplating getting some camber sorted in the rear so i can go that smidge lower but i'm not sure i want to loose that real Fat poke look.
The Front ride height is what i was running before on the karthoums and have not touched it however i can now go lower due to the stretch giving me more clearance. However with the rear at it's current height if i drop the front it will give it a huge forward rake stance.
HOW HAVE I MISSED THIS!?
Car looks great man, love the wheels!

Pulling in and out of driveways on angles, it just misses the guard by a mm or so.

Well, as we all know Day of the Volkswagen is this weekend for all the vic crew and having today and tomorrow off as a part of the long weekend i thought i'd take advantage and give the jetta a overhauling ready for the show.
The day started out at the workshop for a service and a bit of maintenance so on the hoist it goes......well that was the initial idea until i realised i had lowered the car more since last having it on hoist. Funny thing was i had trouble last time getting it on even before the recent drop. Luckily dad had some timber flooring offcuts laying around from his new house so they sure cam in handy.
Got a quick snap with the iphone,

I got home by lunchtime to start pulling pieces of the car to make the cleaning - Chrome grill, lower grilles, number plates ect.
It was at this stage i gave the whole car a pressure clean then it was out with the APC and detailing brush and got to work on every nook and cranny the car had. I'm talking every bumper join, light gap, doors jamb, hinges, just to name a few. It was at this stage where i started to think, "Maybe i do have problems" as i took about 30 min just to complete this step. Once finished out with the Snow foam lance to let it all soak for a while and then pressure washed after.
Then it was wash time for a wash using two bucket method and straight back into the garage still wet for a clay. Now it hadn't been that long since it's last clay but dam did it pull a lot of grime off, especially the lower passenger front door. I spent the good part of an hour claying the car then it was back outside for a rewash and again two bucket method.
After the wash it was back in the garage for a good towel down before taping all the appropriate sections ready for the RO polisher to do it's work tomorrow.
So this is how it sleeps tonight ready for an early morning polishing,
