Hey guys,
Can anyone tell me what this noise in my engine is? I just started changing my bulbs to Osram Nightbreakers, I got one done, but when I put the lights on to check it was working I heard this noise coming from the back of the engine.
Not sure if it was there before because I've never had the bonnet up with the keys in.
Can anyone tell me what it is and whether it's normal??

Thanks!!

That's what I thought, I thought it was a dodgy bulb as I've heard whining noises from dodgy bulbs before (not that loud tho) but it's coming from the right hand side/back of the engine bay and I put the bulb in the left headlight.....
I believe that's a noise from the ecu.

I have the same, I thought it was a fuel pump priming or something. Is is there all the time or does it go after 30sec to 1 min?
It could also be the coolant pump running for a few minutes after engine shutdown to keep the turbo cool.
So many things but I've had it since day zero

Where in the engine bay is the ECU located?

Yeah I was thinking it was a pump priming or something, but there were a few clicking and whining noises that went away but that one stayed around. Does the noise your car makes hang around or go away after 1min?
The engine was still quite warm so hopefully it's just something doing some cooling.... or something?? I'll have a look in the morning after it's sat overnight and see if it happens when I first turn it on.
If anyone knows what it is though, please let me know!!

My Mk 5 TDI does it and so did my mum's 2007 Passat TDI. My dad's Mk 6 TDI doesn't  No idea what it is

Hmmm it's weird, sounds like there's a few cars that do it.
Anyone with a 118 that's noticed it
Still there this morning, so assuming it's always been there and there isn't actually anything wrong. Might just ask the dealer next time I'm down there

I had a technician tell me that a dial up modem type noise coming from the engine bay when i stopped driving was due to the electronic throttle body readjusting or something like that. It sounded plausable and knowing sweet FA about these things i never took it any further. Yours sounds similar pitched but at one tonal level and louder so may not be the same thing
Car didn't blow up though so it can't be all that bad?!

How about switching the bulbs back to stock and listen again, then we'll know if it's the bulbs or not.

Yeah, I figure it hasn't blown up so that's a good sign : )
Doesn't seem to be any problems with the car in any other way.
I've changed the bulbs back and it's still there. Assuming it's been there for a while, if not always and I've only noticed it just now because I had the bonnet open with the keys in...

Hey guys,
Can anyone tell me what this noise in my engine is?
Yes
Nothing to do with your lights and it is perfectly normal.
It is just the Supercharger regulating control flap doing its thing. Pause your youtube vid @ 4 seconds and it is the grey coloured device that is about 2 inches wide with a couple of red gasket indicators that is fitted into the intake tubing directly behind the TSI on the engine cover. If you want, you can remove the ENG cover, unplug the lead to to the regulating control flap and you will see the noise stops. This will also disable the supercharger so you can pretend you are driving a GTI for a bit :P
So it is nothing to be concerned about.

Awesome, thanks for the info Logger!! That's put my mind at ease.
I think I will leave everything connected though, who would want to be without a supercharger? :P
