Mk1 Brakes options

Hey all,

I am planning a 16v swap in my Mk1 with addition of turbo at later stage. Need to know what options there are for brake upgrades......

I know I can get a Wilwood kit from UK and have used Wilwood in past on cars in Scotland but I only run 14" wheels and wouldn't want to change that.

Any bright ideas?:confused: :)

Calliper brackets and 270mm disks fit under 14s. You can get a G60 disk machined down to 270 easily enough. Obviously some quality pads and fluid too.

Black Diamond used to do 270 grooved disks off the shelf but a mate of mine copied my brackets and made his own 270s.

Then you want a mk2 master cylinder and servo fitted too. The brakes still feel weak but they do pull you up big time.

This is a mates Turbo Technics MK1 with 175 hp, he runs std brakes on it except for the pads!! Mental

Yes, Black Diamond make a 270mm disk to suit extension brackets on the MkI.
I bought mine from TSR, but I don't know if you can get them anywhere else.
They are special tho - bigger offeset than stock to allow for the brackets.
You need to trash your dust covers because of the greater offset.
They are a reasonably tight fit under 14's but they're ok.
Don't know where you are, but if you're in Sydney you can have a look on one of the cruises...

Still feels like putting your foot in custurd, but they're effective:)

I upgraded my Mk1 Brakes by installing Cabriole calipers and rotors. Had to machine the rotors down by 16mm overall. After that I still had doughy sorta brakes that weren't so bad, but still short of really good. What really made the difference was adding an oversized booster, which gave me the really sensitive, "bites right away" feel and stops the car very quickly. And the spongy/custard feel went too. I should mention that I also had new slaves & linings at the rear, and had the calipers "kitted", but that was a 'peace of mind' thing, not knowing what shape they were in....

What booster fits the MK1 then? It's tough to get bits here so UK may be best bet...

I actually have a full 305mm TT setup sitting in Scotland but would need rather larger wheels to fit them hahaha. :D

I take it nothing is a straight fit from like a MK3 Golf etc?

mk3 servos are the same diameter as mk2 and probably have the same mounting. I fitted a servo off a Carlton to my wifes car. The brakes were unbelievable. That wasn't hard to do and I kept the std master cylinder.

I reckon Golfloon would have plenty of servos for you.
