i thought they are the same apart from differnt grille and lights?
i thought they are the same apart from differnt grille and lights?
There was a thread started a while back with all the changes.
But I believe it was mainly all cosmetic differences
- Seat design is different
- Mask was colour coded as opposed to Black in the GT Sport
- Full MFD in GT Sport???

These are the differences I've heard/read of:
GT sport has
1. MP3 compatible player,
2. Battery cover is now fabric instead of ABS plastic (evidence that the cost cutting had already started prior to the introduction of the MkVI),
3. Darkened headlights of the GTI,
4. Black instead of colour coded front grill of the GT,
5. Rear Privacy glass,
6. DSG now has 2 second hill start (this needs confirmation from a GTSport owner).
7. Has "2.0 TDI" or 'TSI' badging instead of 'GT' on the rear door, which is a pity because it looks just like any other Golf.
Tom,
My 07 May built GT has a full height MFD. Seat design is the same afaik.

Seat design is the same afaik.
GT has the brick pattern on the seat sides (the bolsters), GT Sport has the plain grey fabric on the bolsters (as per the backs of the seats &c).
[one for the train spotters!]
AFAIK all the GTs had the full height MFDs (was a sore point with the GTI guys until the mid model update).
Oh, and the GT Sport badges on the grille... :-)

so which would you buy?
triode12

The one with the lowest kays and in best condition for the good price??
There is hardly any difference between the GT and GTSport.
I recently purchased a mint 07 GT from a dealer with 14500 kms on the clock.
On another note, for approx 5 grand more, you can get a GTI with double the kms from a private seller. You get a few more gadgets and refinements with the GTI but not the excellent fuel economy of the GT.

Depends on the no. of kays and who is selling it.
Mint ones with low kays (DSG) from a dealer are usually over $30K. While ones from private sellers are below that. TDI versions are usually > $32K.
They didn't sell as many GTs as they did GTIs so finding a good one at a low price is not easy.
As a matter of fact, some used GTsports are priced the same as the new MkVI 118 TSIs with Sport pack. You might want to take a test drive in one of those too to see if there is much of a difference.
Why the GT and not the GTI?

No GTI cos the budget is $25K and most GTI's that are in the 20's have high kms.
Looking for something DSG and 5 door.

I think the sun-visors can extend outwards if you use them to cover the side windows in the MY08 GT Sport
I tried this in my MY07 GT and they don't pull out.

Actually, it is harder to get a GT for $25K no matter what the no. of kays.

So they actually extend in length??I will have to check on my Pirelli.

The TDI motor also never came out in the GT so all GT's are the petrol 1.4 with the twin charging. So if you want a Diesel you have to get a GT Sport.
Dont think I've ever seen one close to 25K though.

Well not really (unless i've misunderstood you), as the 1.4 twin charge came out as a GT & GT Sport...
FWIW - the twin charge engine is a great lil unit. Good luck & hopefully you find what you are after ;)

As usual, I probably put what I wanted to say across badly.
What I meant was that the GT was not a marriage of the GT and Golf Sport like the GT Sport was when VW almagmated the two car models. That and the fact that it was only for sale for less than a year before being replaced by the GTSport makes it rather rare and unique in Australia hence the rather good resale values.

Wasn't the gt sport only on the market for 12 months before IV came in?
I'd be suprised if a similar condition/kms/specced gt could fetch a higher price than a gt sport. Considering the gt sport would be a newer plate.
I thought the whole point of both editions was to expose the 1.4 TSi engine to the Aussie market before the IV arrived (118 and 90).
The TDi version was just a little dust flick in the face- "lookie what we have managed to do with a 2.0 tdi!!"
VW are a bunch of show offs....

ah i see.
i would tend to agree with marius though and think that a similar spec'd GT Sport would prob have a higher resale due to the more recent plate number...
just my 2 cents

Yes, I agree about the GT Sports having higher resale values over GTs due to their more recent build. But the difference in price is marginal bet them (speaking of TSIs)
Actually both the GT and GT Sport are holding their values well. I had a hard time finding one with DSG below $29K with low kms from a dealer.
The lowest on sale at that time apart from mine (also a GT) was a demo with 5600kms and manual transmission - $35K. It sold shortly after I bought mine.
They are hard to come by in BM too - UGs and Silver ones must have been pretty popular.

There are any number of contributing factors which dictate the pricing of a used car- not least is supply and demand.
A quick search online for mk v gti's will give you lots of choice. Gt/gt sport there are no more than a half dozen private and couple dealer.
Gti is technically a better car but when they are in a market surrounded by competition - value is slightly leas than if there were only a few.
When there are only 6 or so gt's to choose from- chances are there is only 1 or 2 in the spec (tdi/tsi dsg/6m) you want.
My 2 cents

Is that a demo with very low kays?
Mine with 14500ks was slightly under $30K.
$40K is way above your $25K budget..and for that $40K you could pick up a like new/demo MKV GTI with less than 100kms.

A gt sport with 40,000kms (dsg or 6m??) has got to be no more than 30k
I picked up mine with 3,800kms (dsg united grey) for 30k 7months ago..
I'll be the first to admit that I got a cracker of a deal- but I would think 30k is a good start and work the price DOWN from there.
I know of a guy who traded a black dsg gt with 26,000kms. The dealer gave him $25k.
So you know the dealer prob payed about 23 for it on a trade.
Hope that helps!!!!

I know... Sorry! Every so often a deal like that comes along. Right place right time- perfect car (loooove gt sports in united grey- gti I love in white, R32's in their signature blue. All 3 are pretty hot in black)
my point is: the car was advertised for 34k.
And even though I do agree the gt and gt sports are hard to
come by- you should be able to find what you're looking for. Just be patient and when negotiating be willing to walk away.
It's what I did- and the seller came back to the table.

True.
The grille is black only (Jettas have horizontal chrome bars on them).
The centre bumper is body coloured on the GT, gloss black on the Sport.
The fog grilles are also only black (on both).
The lower centre grille trim is also body coloured on the GT.
The R Cars (R32, R36, R50, and [in Germany] the optional R pack models have a satin chrome centre bumper (not chrome or brushed - satin) and satin chrome lower grille trim and satin chrome upper grille bars (on the Golf).
