To start off with im going to have a whinge about the organisation of the event for Spectators. Late last week i was given a list of where and when the cars would be at certain stages. I wanted this as i was particularly interested in seeing how Guy's bunch of cars faired and also meeting andrew. The schedual was completely incorrect i would understand if one event was changed but the whole dam thing was. I spent three hours in the morning looking for the right group and one stage was actually moved even though the sign was still up at the original position. Then i went to mount cotton and was lucky enough to meet Al in his R32. Which was great to see do the hill climb, luckily he had some idea where Guy was and after we got to where guy should have been i found out that Guy had left to take Andrew back to the airport. None of this info had been left on the website about any of the changes. Luckily for me i got to see the Golf and Polo to do one run of a stage.

Now for some pics. Sorry if there not the best.

Hey fellas!!!
Back in Tassie and at work for me. We had a great weekend, a driveline failure in the Audi so it was retired on friday. Wanted to meet you fellow forum members and spent a lot of time looking out for any stray watercoolers. I actually approached someone with a blue Polo GTI at Mt Cotton yesterday and asked them but no, They were following one of the many Evo entrants. Bugger!
So the forum stickers came home with me.
The Golf and the Polo went like clockwork all weekend. Thought we were going to lose the Golf at Mt Cotton when it slid down the hill on the grass sideways heading for the macadamia shell heap at the bottom but Dave manage to get it back on the tarmac somehow and pull it up!:D
I will post some pics shortly.
Cheers, Andrew:)

Hey Boy's - sorry we couldnt catch up & no excuses for the time schedule from the organisers :? - and killing the TT on day one didnt help.

Times - lol - I posted this up on vortex before: :D

Quote:

We can happily say that the Polo does an easy 17 second 1/4 mile
We also know that a TT's driveshaft can not hold the power we are putting out at the moment!

We can also happily say that the Golf beat a 6.0 litre supercharged VE SS commodore driven by a V8 supercar driver down the 1/4 mile.

I think you should note that the TT was not a TT - it was a Mazda MX5, as we sheared the tailshaft off the TT on Friday morning.

The Polo GTI both runs were "interesting" My wife was driving, never been to a dragstrip in her life.

Run #1 she stalled it.

Run #2 she overstaged, they told her to back the car up (so she did), the then managed a perfect launch in reverse. Put it in first (from about 10 metres back) and continued to post a 17 second 1/4 mile and pass a proton GTI in the process.

The Golf GTI spun the fronts through 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears - so thats a pretty good time - remembering that both drivers of the Golf had never even driven it before.

So you think the times are bad? (I know a 1/4 mile is the "only" measure of performance).

What about the course class records that were set by the GTI in the hill climb & on the tracks? Dont they count

Only joking - but if big horsepower cars that normally run 12's on the day could only run 14's & 15's - do you think you should take it as gospel?

Anyway - it was a hell of a lot of fun! The Polo & Golf copped full abuse all weekend, nearly seventy launches (Nice pics of the smoking Golf Shaneth!) and are still going like champions!

Hope to see some more forum members out for the other rounds!

Yeh Guy, I know what you mean with all that racing to cover, I would have been doing the same. The wifes second run on the 1/4 shows what the Polo can do, I'd say she got serious after the first bit, good on her for having a go. Congrats. to you all.

Hey Eddy, no problem! It was a joke, she was so embarrassed to do that (really upset) - we reckon that cost her about 6 seconds, so it should have been an 11 second run (LOL!).

Who else has a fast time after starting in reverse :?:

26-02-2007, 04:06 PM
Well that explains it then, Good on Louise for doing it. Pity the TT didnt make it hey Guy, Now i guess its back to the drawing board to fix it??

Guy_H
26-02-2007, 04:52 PM
Yeah Shaneth,

we squeezed some more power out of it & have never had a drivetrain failure before. not 100% sure if it was purely power or partly age related (car has done well in excess of 245,000kms from new, on the original engine / gearbox / differential) and it was the factory sealed joint that tore apart (big 12mm bolts, high grade and it made a real mess - lifted the back of the car off the ground when it snapped).

Anyway, since we have to pull a fair bit apart to fix it, we can build our new stronger motor (rods) so we can run well over 400hp, also will do a limited slip front differential, and check out the rear differential as well! All I need now is the time...... :)

well tell your wife not to feel to bad, the navigator in the lotus witch i say was his wife also launch in reverse at the hill climb every one had a laugh but then it was back to what they were there for, it's all part of motorsport;)

Stones in the brakes at Stanthorpe Airport were a constant problem and required constant removal after each run. All the cars in the rally suffered this and the Mk5 only runs about 3 m/m of clearance between the front calipers and the 19 inch wheels. A few cars ran their tyres down to the canvass here and it was only the first day of the event and only lunchtime!!!

Good pics Andrew :)

Found one of me in the TT replacement MX5 substitute car. Bit of contrast going to a car that liked a bit of oversteer!

thanks to boost cruising & opticalnote.com for the pic!

Had a great weekend, thanks for coming up Andrew though I think they kept you busier than you wanted and thanks for the VW Watercooled decals.

The car was brilliant all weekend and didn't miss a beat though the driver could have been more switched on sometimes. Two red lights one at each of the different dragways and then a few wrong directions on the different motorkahnas put paid to a top 20 finish in drivers outright for me :-(

Highlight of my weekend was passing Keith Weel in the V8 commodore around Morgan Park and QLD Raceway, he wasn't a happy camper after that happening to him twice. Ended up in 26th out of 47 in the drivers outright with one 4th quickest overall in reaction time at Morgan Park drags and one 9th quickest overall at Bill Norris Oval motorkahna. Not sure about the drivers handicap result as I was the only car in my class so have no idea how they came up with the results there.

Next up is the NSW round at the end of May and I hope to be down for that and it would be great to have a few NSW members enter as well.

Cheers Al
