I have been looking around for cheap general parts like
spark plugs etc but they are soo expencive I found that
Auto One are generaly the cheapest, but still charge $30
for oil filter, $90 for a set of sparkys and $220 for the leads.
I broke:( so I have been delaying on the change of the leads
spark plugs and the car needs them very bad,:(
If some one can advise of any shops it would be greatly appriciated

Thanks

sorry people I'm actualy talking about a vr6

are you shore?? coz at one of those part shops they sold the bosch leads for like $500

they have seen you coming.

sparkies should cost you no more than $5 each, ie $20 a set - go to repco or supercheap and look in the the catalogue for your golf, then get them in.

leads? no more than $100 for a mk1. again, supercheap will have enough to get you outa trouble, good bosch ones will cost you more but to be realistic, those ****ty blue top gun ones seem to go just fine.

the absolute best oil filter you can get should'nt cost you more than $20, and you can get your generic type ones anywhere for between 10-$15.

what is your car anyways?

Tim

depends on what sort of engine we are talking.
VR6 spark plugs arent cheap. And the oil filters arent your usual type either.

well I'm actually talking about parts for a vr6
I used to own a escort about the same age as a mk1 golf
and the plugs did cost $5 and the filter did cost $10 and the leads did cost
about $30
I think ever thing is expencive just for the vr6:(

I hope those ngk prices are for the platinum ones. the standard ones are heaps cheaper.

top gun leads dont fit. i bought some and had to return them. (they cost me $120 from bursons)

imparts sell the hengst filters for $12. They are the company that makes the OEM ones

You cant just buy Golf leads at Repco, Supercheap etc.
The crap that they sell are carbon.

Topgun leads as sold by 90% of autobarns, repco and supercheaps are not a carbon lead.

Well what is the unamed black conductor bit in the middle?
And if you have an electronic ignition Golf, how do you fit them into the cap?

BlackVr6ix
26-02-2007, 11:04 AM
from http://www.topgunleads.com.au/difftypes.html

"The conductor utilises a spirally wound stainless steel construction, in which a single stainless steel wire is helically wound around either a ferrite or kevlar carrier."

please explain what you mean about fitting them into the cap? The kits made specifically for wach car have the correct boots and fittings for that application.

when i ordered topgun leads for my car they come with the standard rubber boot on the end. there was no way of installing them as the rubber barely fit into the intake manifold and wasnt long enuf to be able to apply any pressure to clip it to the spark plug. took them and my car to bursons and said "if u can install them then im happy to keep em" the guy tried for 5 mins and said umm no this isnt gonna work. then accidently broke one trying to get it back out of the hole. he rang topgun whilst i was there who said "they will fit!" and if i was willing to drive out to the topgun warehouse they would be happy to take a look for me. If they dont fit they were also considering making something custom to suit. but yeah. too much stuffin about.

I ended up with magnecor leads which have a rubber boot as well.. but its actually possoble to install them. removal is a bit dodgy as u have to yank on them but magnecor assured me its fine to do that cos they mould the lead onto the boot.

Id suggest if youre after leads get some with the correct Beru style end cap as they then work with the proper removal tool. can be had pretty cheaply from the US

Do they have the unique VW fitting? The male terminal is in the cap. Do they have any resistance in the lead for radio suppression?

Now I must admit that I have not seen these leads and they may be OK, but I am sceptical as I have not seen any leads from generic parts suppliers that are suitable for Volkswagens.

if only they did last forever!
the insulation develops cracks and they leak spark!

I'm not talking about their generic length leads, im talking the kits they make for individual cars.

I had topgun leads on my alfa v6 and they fit as good as the factory bosch leads, even the boot design was better!

Tim
26-02-2007, 11:25 AM
this was a custom kit that was labelled as specific for my car and ordered especially

Are you sure that they were originals?
In 30 years I have never seen one fail.

Tim
26-02-2007, 11:29 AM
yep they were originals. its a common problem on vr6s. maybe its due to the extreme heat from where they live.

hm just looking at the topgun site. says for the vr6 they use a metal shielded boot as per oem leads now.. maybe thats new since i returned mine.. that was a few years ago.

the boot that fits over the end of the spark plugs. seems they have revised it tho as per my last post

Are you sure that it's not just the connctor at the spark plug end that fails?

Tim

dont remember where mine cracked. But i was able to wrap in in electrical tape temporarily till i got some new leads.

they are pretty good, if you can get them for the same price as topgun, go for it.

Tim
26-02-2007, 03:50 PM
if blackvr6ixeses leads come with proper ends then id get the topguns. I got magnecors from australia and they arent the same product as they sell in the US which is what i thought i was purchasing. they work fine. But they dont have the proper ends so are hard to put on with the standard manifold.

if you can hold out for a couple weeks for delivery. Id contact tmtuning and see what price they can do on a set of leads. Will probly be cheaper and better.

Don't expect any performance increase from aftermarket leads. You may loose performance if the leads are not good, but you will not gain anything. There is a lot of BS in advertising.n:

Ive got 9mm NGK leads that are advertised as increasing spark power by 30%. Bought them in Japan for 9500yen (about $100). They have rubber boots but fit fine, albiet rather snuggly. Hard to say if they increased power as I changed the plugs at the same time, but I can tell you that the combination of new plugs and leads made a HUGE difference.

Yes, where did u get them?

I've been quoted $245 for OEM leads by a vdub specialist. Absolute RIP OFF!

Also, the NGK.com.au site does not have a part listing for VR6. Only 1985 - 1992 1.8L golf.

Ye gods!

Spose its a good thing then that I said yes to the quote.

Seems a lot for some short strips of wiring. Very beefy wiring.

I have seen those fat ignition leads not fit into the engine cover. Check the thickness out in case you need to return them.
