View Full Version : Parcel shelf balls in Mk5?

To the mark 5 owners, in the Mark 6 forum we're finding that when we encounter a hump, our balls knock against the parcel shelf creating a noise. Details (& jokes) in this post (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=38236). The balls I'm referring to are at the end of the string suspending the parcel shelf.

I don't recall hearing my balls knock against anything in my old Mark 5... just wondering if any Mark 5 owners have this issue or whether it's just Mark 6?

my balls are quiet... but they are a soft edged rubbery looking thing. Are yours hard plastic? Or other tougher material prone to loud noise when making contact with the inner boot plastic covers?

I tell you what is annoying though - in the mk5.... the passenger side seatbelt clip constantly hitting the plastic pillar!!

Never had any problems with my balls making excessive noise.
They do hang quite low and swing freely when the boot is closed though so I guess unless you were moving along at quite a brisk pace then they wouldnt really hit anything

LOL.

Mine are fine.

as far as mine are concerned,

One hangs a little bit lower than the other. I have returned the item to point of sale/origin, and have been assured that it is normal/acceptable.

They swing around a bit in the warm weather, but I have noticed definite "shrinkage" in colder climes.

I had some trouble with mine, so I had them removed.

Mark V has the exact same problem. As I mentioned on the other thread I'll post details of a fix that lets the string remain taught when the hatch is closed soon once I get the final parts.

I even had the rigid bit that they affix to removed at the same time. :emo_baghead:

I think the balls in the Mk6 hang lower than in the Mk5. Can someone look at their balls later today? Just curious to know if they are resting against the parcel shelf.

In the mk6 they swing cos the balls are not against the parcel shelf.

This is all just curiosity as to why I don't recall any issue from my old Mk5 (as I don't have it any more)

was that a pre-requisite to be a Mod?

Respect.

Nah, nothing so sinister to mod around here. I call it the 'parcel shelf delete', you can check out my thread I am going to start soon.

The butt dyno will give me the impression I have .5 additional KW now.

They're the same. The balls only rest against the parcel shelf when you open the hatch. When the hatch is closed they hang down to keep the string taut.

Yeah, it is a little dark in the rear end. I will see later today if I can shove a camera up the rear to take a pic. I'll do likewise & keep my tail shut

The missus is not complaining about hearing my balls making noise during a bumpy ride, so I guess it's all ok.

I removed mine and the string and replaced with elastic from sunglasses neck holders. No more noise.

Mine do this too on speedbumps/hitting driveways not level with the street etc.
First time it happened I pulled over thinking something under the car had hit the speedbump or something... it doesn't really bug me anymore unless a passenger mentions it and then I notice it every single time for the rest of the day

I'll compare with my dad's Mark VI tomorrow to see if there's any difference in how far they hang down... no jokes please haha :icon_crazy:

Here's my solution to the problem. No longer do my balls hang low and knock around but are now held in close with limited bounce.

Knocking noise from retaining band on luggage compartment cover (http://www.my-gti.com/1751/)

Cost <$10
Time <10 minutes

Never would have thought of using those retractable things... I never use the one on my swipe card for work and I have a spare one in my desk so it looks like I'm all set to fix my low hangers after work tomorrow

I identified the problem with my balls early in my ownership period.

Problem was solved at no cost by knotting the string above the shelf to stop them from dangling.

Now I have loose string above the shelf, but that's not noticeable, and it still works the same way without any problems.....

Sorry it's taken a while... finally got around to taking a photo inside the rear where my balls are.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/12/IMG_8693_1circled-1.jpg

It's hard to tell, but there's a 14cm drop from the shelf to the bottom of the dangle.

Maybe it's nothing to do with the length of the descent, but the weight? The mv5's balls may be heavier than the mark 6.

Your balls look identical to mine so I dont know?!

it seems that some mkv owners have experienced the same issue as you so maybe some of us are just deaf. I reckon gerhards idea of a small knot would be fine. It really wouldnt be that noticeable.

Yeah, when I compare my balls to your balls, I have to say our balls do look the same & hang just as low. :-P

When VW were designing the Mk6 they took pains to make it quieter than the Mk5. Hopefully they will resolve the issue with swinging balls by the time Mk7 comes.

A test drive over a hump will help check all the noise issues including thumping balls ;-)
