Hi All,
I've been trying to find the answer to this but have not had any luck.
In every picture i've seen of the MKVI GTI, i've noticed the 'screen' in the dash. In the MKV, I recall that you only received this with the Sat Nav option. Are all the MKVI's i've seen fitted with NAV or does it come with the screen regardless of whether NAV is fitted or not this time around?
The reason I ask is that if its simply a NAV module, then its bloody expensive. I tend to know my way around Sydney pretty well and would easily do without the NAV if it still came with the fitted screen/display. On the rare occasion that I do need to check a map - Google maps on my iPhone does the trick nicely.
If what I am assuming is correct above, would you guys think that it is possible to retro fit the NAV module at a later stage for the next owner of the car?
Thanks in advance.

Sat nav headunit is the RNS510 - completely different from non sat nav equipped cars, which are fitted with the RCD510. RCD510 has the same size screen (although lower resolution), still touch screen. Fewer buttons each side of the screen too.
Retro-fit RNS510 is do-able, but expensive.

Did you mean the MFD?

Or the RCD something or another?

Or the full RNS Navigation Unit?

Actually. I think the standard Mk 6 fitment is the RCD310 — RCD510 is an ($$$$) optional entertainment unit.
I got the RNS510 and am now somewhat regretting it — the supplied maps (Sensis, and I suspect not the latest — they seem to be behind Google Maps in many areas) leave a lot to be desired.
So far, everywhere I've wanted to go and not known the way, the device hasn't known either — all it knows is the nearest town, if the address is outside the town limits you're on your own.
Plus I cannot get it to display satellite speed, nor to avoid toll roads (I have a thing about paying twice...) — both of which can be done with nearly all the portable units that cost but a fraction of the VW unit's price (in fact they mostly seem to cost less than VW demand for update map DVD's!.)
The nearest I can get to "no tolls" is a warning that "there are toll roads on your route" which of course I already know. What I want it to do is guide me round them which, since they've started to proliferate and roads are being altered to shunt one onto them, is a bit of a strain on my ancient memory.

You can tell RNS510 to not use toll roads in Route Options.
Golf GTI comes with RCD510 as standard equipment.
Google Maps will always be more current... not much you can do about that. I've never had a problem with mine not knowing where to go, maybe I'm lucky with where I have wanted to use it. "True" speed is hidden on most of the manufacturer integrated systems.
Portable GPS units have their place... but I'd go integrated every time, even with some disadvantages. More accurate in cities (gyro based not just GPS), better screen, less theft risk, no cables or devices around the steering wheel / windscreen to come off or fly around, mutes the stereo when it talks, integrates with the MFD, integrates with my Bluetooth (which also pauses my music, etc), voice control, faster reaction to route changes, etc etc...
Disadvantages - more costly - both to buy and update, won't show GPS-based speed, and peculiarity of the RNS510, you need to know the suburb before you can put in the street name.
All in all, I'd never go portable in my car again.

I had a RNS 510 retrofitted in my Car. I am happy with the device. As moderator mentioned it is accurate especially when you are driving in city/cbd areas where you have tall buildings. The RNS 510 unit uses gyro and due to this every motion is tracked to exact, where as the portable units cannot do this.
The only downside I noticed from changing from the factory fitted RCD 310 is the drop in sound quality, audio volume and reception quality of radio.
My RCD 310 was better in sound, had much output (even though both are mentioned as 4 X 20 Watts in spec) and had better Radio signal reception. I think the RCD 310/510 series are new and have got better amplifiers than RNS 510/ RCD 300/500

Golf MK 6 (90/118 TSIs / TDIs) come with RCD 310 as standard. It is not a touch screen, but I reckon it sounds really good. I am not sure if there is an option to upgrade to RCD 510 head unit from the dealer. I know that you can get it with Dynaudio pack which cost 1800 AUD extra when ordered with the car!
You may check with the dealer anyway as they are offered as standard on GTIs, Jetta 147s, Passat etc. It should be cheaper than RNS 510 (nav unit)

Guys... please read the OP's post then read the subsequent ones b4 posting.
He asked about GTI head unit. I already posted that the GTI comes standard with RCD510.
He also doesn't say anything about being interested in what sounds better - he is talking about sat nav...

Your RNS510 is probably incorrectly coded. They are a better sounding unit than either the RCD510 or 310.

Sorry my mistake :)
I kind of missed the GTI part
Sorry, so did I.
Thanks for the tip on avoiding toll roads, though — once I found what the icon meant, it was simple.

Guys essentially my point was this. In the MKV there were 2 units. 1 NAV and 1 which looked pretty basic. In the MKVI (from what i've since learned) there is also 2 units. 1 NAV and 1 which looks very similar but with a lower spec (resolution) and no NAV. The reason for my asking all of this is due to the potential savings of not fitting the Nav as I personally rarely use it and if I do, the iPhone does the trick for me. I do however think that resale might be affected by not having the NAV version fitted. Come 2-3 years down the track when it comes time to sell - people may expect this kind of option above others (such as adaptive susp etc).

I haven't had this suburb problem at all. I have entered my country as Australia and town as Perth. All I have to do for a new address is press Street and start typing the street name. If there are a lot of streets with the same name, there is a button up the top that gives the number of choices. Press it, and it lists the street name with the suburbs. In fact, you only need to type in the first couple of letters of the street, which pares down the list as you go. Works beautifully. Updated software in the new GTI, maybe?

Same here, I rarely use suburbs but instead use Brisbane etc to do my searching.

There are more head units available in the Mark V and the VI and two sat navs in the Mark V (actually two in the Mark VI if you could the RNS 310).
I wouldn't buy Sat Nav because the next buyer might want it. Either buy it because YOU want it or don't bother as you're throwing away money. The RNS 510 can be easily retrofitted later on.

x 2. Every car I've looked at with a retro fitted RNS 510 has incorrect coding.

Does not having the Sat Nav restrict you from any other features? MDI/Bluetooth for example?
And is there anywhere I can find details of the actual differences between the two units?
1. Higher resolution on Nav Version
2. Navigation Included
3. More buttons..

Correct... not sure why you'd need a 6 CD changer when it has a DVD drive, SD card slot, AND a built-in hard drive?
And yes, the DVD drive will read CDs.

The 6 disc changer was standard on the old sat nav system because it had to have a cd in the drive for the navigation data.
The new unit doesn't need a cd in the drive for navigation and has over 60GB of storage for music (20gb+32gb+8.4gb) available hence no need for a six stacker that most people wouldn't use.
