The majority of the discussion here seems to be about the DSG box.
I'd like to know if anyone has got the manual and what is it like?
Any qualms or issues?
Cheers.

I haven't personally driven the manual, but I've only heard nothing but praise for the manual in the MK6 Golfs. Both from friends and press.

had my car for about 2 weeks and no problems with the manual. smooth and easy to drive. If manual is what you want then go for it!

To be honest I fiound it a **** of a gearbox at first, the gates are nice and tight and the clutch action is great, and I must admit it has gotten better with age, but when I first got it and less so now, as a manual driver I found it hard to drive the thing flat knacker, always came out with a crunch or jerk, most of the time 1st to second.
I've become a custom to its ways a little more now. and the electronic throttle might play a part in it too, first manual I've owned with one. But i never found before that i had to back off the throttle just before clutched in, and re-accelerate just before i de-clutched to make it smoother, other manuals I've had would have flared when I did that, so it could quite possibly be the electronic throttle.
DSG next for me though lol.

I've driven a manual MK6 GTI, not sure if it's any different to the 118TSI, but fairly short throw from the factory and very smooth/comfortable.

I didn't notice any major difference between the Mk6 on my test drive vs my old Mk5 comfortline.
I think I read somewhere ages ago that they use the same clutch in the GTI... meaning that the clutch plates will last for a long while.
I certain felt that the clutch was more solid than a lot of jap cars I've driven.
The slight downside is the uptake may be quite 'abrupt' but over time I got used to modulating the clutch pedal to smooth that out - mk6 may not have this issue.
Manual is definitely more fun & involving than a DSG. If I didn't have to consider the ability of others who may want to use my car, I'd go back to a manual any day.

Have driven the new gti in both manual and dsg and i prefered the manual! Founds the shifts to be super smooth and quick. Plus no expensive dsg services

I have a manual in my 118TSI but DSG in my wifes MkV Jetta TFSI. I got the manual partly due to a limited budget and partly because I would like to add more power (already APR Stage 1) and it isn't clear how the 7spd DSG will handle heaps of torque. To be honest though I suspect this won't be an issue.
Coming from an auto but having had manuals before the first few days were a novelty but then I found it a bit annoying. I was finding it difficult to be smooth but this isn't an issue anymore, which I suspect is because a) I re-learned how to drive a manual again, and b) the box and engine have loosened up a bit (2500km).
Now I'm really enjoying it. The shifts have a nice, positive feel, the throw is about right and the clutch take up point is spot on. I can probably drive it more smoothly than the 6spd DSG in the Jetta, particularly when taking off!
Just got a Mk6 GTI manual, last Thursday and have done about 300kms in city traffic. Found the clutch very light, short travel and progressive. the gear shift is positive, light and with a short throw. Its been a few years since I have driven a manual and had little trouble driving the manual. My wife actually made the comment that it was as smooth as an auto.
My son has a Fiat Punto 1.3JTD and the gearbox on that is positively agricultural by comparison.
Glad I got the manual,
cheers

Agreed. The GTI's manual box is great. Nice and light, smooth gear changes and short ratio's. Definitely the manual over the DSG, you get the real driving experience...
