Now I'm sure a lot of you are thinking...what the hell is that...and a few whoe are a little more cluey will be thinking....that belongs on an aircooled forum....

Anyway as some of you know I have sourced a front cut from an Audi A3 Turbo, and plan to frankenstien the motor into this dune buggy (Meyers Manx) in a mid mount configuration. j:

21-02-2007, 01:14 PM
dear god...

btw, get some serious downforce on that thing! they are so twitchy at speed.
Wayne penrose did one up with a turbo intercooled T4 aircooler in one for customer, it was nuts.

WWWOOOOOOOWWWWW!!! patient number 1 aka AUSGOLFER please step forward!!!was thinking ,oohh no not a aircooled but then your psycotic mind said a3 1.8t!! STRAIGHT TO THE PADDED ROOM!! best of luck mate,,great idea:)

ausgolfer
21-02-2007, 01:35 PM
yes crazy I know.
and yes would be very twitchy with a high power rear mount motor, wheel standing all over the place. Thats why I think cutting out the rear seat area and mid mounting the motor will give it a better balance, handling etc.
Will be fabricating up my own chassis aswell, which will be stronger than any old beetle floorpan.

static1800
21-02-2007, 01:39 PM
They're mainly so twitchy because of the length of them and the weight factor.

We have a buggy we race karnacross and motokarna in, its a shortened beetle floor pan, hauls arse.

21-02-2007, 02:21 PM
Carl, you know im helping you build this monster!!

ausgolfer
21-02-2007, 02:29 PM
Yes I know ;) Think I'll use those brembos you gave me on the front :D

BlackVr6ix
21-02-2007, 02:37 PM
sounds like a plan, only problem would be handbrake on the rear. but theres plenty of time to work that out! hahaha

ausgolfer
21-02-2007, 02:40 PM
yes I know, I'm thinking about having a caliper just for the handbrake on the rear, supercar style....j:

BlackVr6ix
21-02-2007, 02:42 PM
On one of the clubmans i built in 2002, we used a single caliper on one wheel as the handbrake hahaha

when do you get the engine? :D loving it!!!

ausgolfer
22-02-2007, 02:53 PM
Funny you should ask that Josh, the engine arrived this morning.
Now question time starts.

The oilfilter mount is cracked as you can see in this picture and not sure if this could be welded because of the thread.

ausgolfer

Here are the clocks and ignition.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/ausgolfer/ignn.jpg
and the engine mount looks like it wouldn't be too bad to mount on a future chassis rail.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/ausgolfer/engmt.jpg
as will the tranny mount which will be a little lower.

Funny thing, I was looking for the engine number in the original mk1,2,3 positions and couldn't find any, but a sticker on top of the motor says AGU followed by 6 digits. So am assuming that is the engine number.

The Cut has come without an airflow meter and the top half of the air box.....if anyone knows where to get an airflow meter for this motor cheap please let me know. But I imagine it'll be a long while before it's up and running.

Some initial measurements have shown that the towers are in a fairly decent position for going under the back of the manx shell without too much fuss. I'll bring them forward a bit for a more upright position (they lean back a little in the original position) and probably inward a little.

A few things I'm keen to know is what I need to retain of the wiring to keep the ecu and motor going? for example if I remove the wiper motor will the ecu still work? Obviously I want to get rid of as much as possible.

Also there's lots of random bits to the fuel system which I'm unfamiliar with. and I'll need to know what I can turf.

The power steering pump and the a/c compressor are gone and there's lots of wires in the area which I'm not sure of thier use.

PS any one want some very average condition front audi a3 floor mats? j:

I'll help you rewire the sucker when your ready. You are welcome to my vr6 airbox and the K&N thats in it if you want and if you want to run a bigger cooler on it i've got a vr4 cooler tucked away at mums place.

ausgolfer

Currently nothing happening. Have only been able to gather a few parts since uni started back, has been hectic.

But I now have some seats out of a Honda Integra,

a larger intercooler from a Mitsubishi VR4 thanks to BlackVr6ix,

also am getting my hands on a Gemini front end suspension set up for mock up only, as my final year university project will be on making the front double wishbone suspension set up for the buggy.

Have been sketching some basic chassis designs in my spare time but at the moment Uni is very busy as I've had the flu aswell.
