Is is possible to buy a non remote (dumb) key for current VWs? Not keen on leaving my car keys in the wheel well when I go surfing. The 2 provided remote keys will drown if i take them swimming. So I reckon I need a plain old metal key. is there such a beast?

I have one of these when I paddle my kayak, and they are indeed solid units. If I forgot the combo, I reckon I'd be screwed, as the tumblers are a quality unit. Mine isn't this exact brand, but it's a full metal jobbie with a very solid lock. I clip it onto my towbar eyelets.

As posted above, my MKIV came with an all plastic key....no remote/light etc.

I always wondered what it was for...now I know

Greg that Key Safe looks like it would be a workable solution. My preference would be for small waterproof key that i could carry with me. Is this actually possible or do all the modern keys need a chip in them for the immobiliser? Is it in fact a valet key I am after?

If you want to hide your normal remote in the car and lock it with a "dead" key then it is very simple to just buy a blank plain key without an immobiliser chip. Lots of good locksmiths can do a computer controlled VW key cut, some will even have a VAG blank available. If not, blanks are readily available on line.

If you really want a key that will operate your engine that his a whole new (and more expensive) ball game. The only place I've found that can supply an immobiliser chip that works in modern VAG vehicles is the VAG dealer, and you also have to get the ECU programmed to recognise the new key. The immobiliser chip is totally waterproof (but not the remotes).

Remember to wipe off the salt water before putting it in the lock, otherwise it will corrode the pins/wafers.

You have the APR flash as well, might be worth looking into adding the security option so that you have to enter a pin number to start the car. This way if someone breaks into the car (I assume you have no alarm) and finds the keys they won't be able to drive the car.

Good idea. Considered it early on, but decided against it for two reasons;
1) For me is is not worth the ~$400 cost
2) the lock/unlock process is too convoluted for my liking.

You don't have to use it every time and your insurance company won't pay out if you leave your keys in the car. Could be the best $400 you spent!

This is what I loved about my Mercedes key. The metal eyelet for your key ring popped out and became a regular old surf proof key. Lock the fancy electrical bit in the glove box and lock the door with the key and away you go. As I sold that I'm worried about how I'm going to go when I get the key with the Skoda. So, hope to hear of a solution soon!

I just use a mobile phone wet pack at the moment, but a plastic key would be better, not so bulky.

I got a spare cut which will only central lock the doors and the glove box when I go for a surf.
Cost me about $100 and got it done by Adam at http://www.vagarage.com.au/ who is on the Gold Coast.
I know I could have probably shopped around on ebay or tried a mister minit but with Adam I knew it'd be done right first time.
If you're interstate I'm sure any other vw specialist repairer should be able to do the same for a similar price.
Hope this helps.

I have come to the conclusion that any form of waterproof valet (non remote) key for the Mark6 is not going to be a practical solution. The one and only key entry point is here.... I reckon after about a week of popping the cover off it will be stuffed. So I am weighing the the risk of a leaky wet pack drowning a key against hiding one in a lockable container on the outside of the car somewhere with associated theft and insurance implications. I believe Coastie's wet pack option is the only one that is going to be workable for me.

I believe Coastie's wet pack option is the only one that is going to be workable for me.

There are quite a few different styles of wetpacks around. Some of the simplest are like a heavy duty ziplock plastic bag with a double seal. It is possible to have a smaller one inside a slightly larger one to improve the level of water protection.

If you do get a leak in the wetpack then don't panic. You can separate the remote into two halves and then disassemble the remote to dry it out properly. If you've got a good spray contact cleaner for electronics I'd use that, but in a pinch I'd rinse it with metho to get the salt water out and dry it ASAP.

The key blade and immobiliser chip will be absolutely fine (the chip is inside a glass capsule, so is totally waterproof).

Worst case scenario is you have to buy a replacement remote half. These are available cheaply from eBay (just make sure to get the same part number and frequency). Your owner's manual gives instructions on re-progarmming a new remote (ie you don't have to go to the dealer).

can anyone tell me what type of key is in the new mk6 vw has is it fully electronic or is it notched out for pins in the barrel , second question anyone know the replacement cost for a key.

Idle

The key is 'sort of' notched (grooved each side — looks like half a worm-hole in an apple.)

Price? You don't want to lose one...

Don't know the exact Australian price, but it's well into the hundreds (probably plus a hefty fee if you can't program it yourself.)

Here's a reference to it from the US — (it's for MKV, but I don't think the keying has changed for the Mk VI)

The price here might easily be double that in the US.

Replacement Keys - VW GTI Forum / VW Rabbit Forum / VW R32 Forum / VW Golf Forum - Golfmkv.com (http://www.golfmk5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106806)

Note the keys used in the US might not work here — I've a notion the radio frequency is different.

Hey all,

Picked up my car a few days ago; love the driving!

Quick question, i have 2 keys that came with the car, but they dont have the red panic button on them nor does it have the valet key.

I remember watching a youtube clip by "Ask a VW sales guy" and he was going over the keys .. i wonder if its a Mk5 version or a US version.

Its a GTI MK6 - FEB 2010 build.

Ask A VW Sales Guy is American based. The panic button and valet key is for the American market only.

Going by the amount of agony, worry, and angst in the posts on this forum, the panic button might be useful for the Australian market.

Worried you haven't run the engine in properly? Panic button!
Is that a rattle in my new Golf? Panic button!
Can't make the #$%#@ search function on this forum work? Panic button!

Lol... you know it's not a "page VW panic button" right?
It's a "some scary dude in this dodgy car park is about to kill me and I'm not going to get to my car in time so I'll set the alarm off to hopefully deter him from murdering me"-type panic button. ;)

I just got a price from a VW dealer for a spare key of $297
This breaks down as $198 for the key + $99 to code it

Is this a good deal or are there cheaper ways around it ?

I only got 1 key when I bought my car so need a second one for the missus 

My sister had her Mk5 Golf key replaced for $430 at Barloworld Five Dock in January this year so $297 is a pretty good deal.

Hi

I have just been quoted $128 by dealer to get a wet/dry key cut (without remote).
This is the key you can use to open the doors but can't start the car with.
I need this key to go surfing: I use this key to get into car where I hide to remote key to start car.

$128 seems a little high to provide a blank and mechanically cut a key (which a locksmith can do for $20).

Does anyone know where I could find a blank key for an MK6 Golf?

Thanks guys

JM

I got one for my mk5 (I assume they'd be pretty much identical locks though) from a good quality auto-locksmith. It cost $65.

You just need to be careful that you go to a quality locksmith, because the key is laser cut (very precise, the guy who did mine had to have two goes at it) and it's expensive equipment to invest in so not all locksmiths have it.

Hey mate. I merged your thread here (actually merging 4 other threads all on the same topic) into the one thread and also placed it in the MK6 Forum Index (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/forums/f112/official-mk6-forum-important-threads-posts-index-%2A%2Alook-here-first%2A%2A-59253.html) to hopefully make it easier for people to find.

Read back because there have been several suggestions / solutions raised for surfers/swimmers etc.

Additionally, there is a company on eBay who sells the VW replacement remote and can cut the key using the proper cutting technique based on a photo of your key that you send them. They use the machine marks and NOT the "grove", which could be worn, therefore making a copy which is as good as your original key on the day you got it. I'm sure a company like that could make you a dead key to simply get into your car if you contacted them nicely with your requirements :)

Hi

I am looking to get a spare key for my new golf.

How much are they and is it worth getting one now or waiting till you need to get one.

I had a situation with my old car that we needed a new key and they didn't make them any more..

wonder if it's likely this will happen with the golf. Ie how often do they change the key systems... my car is a golf R

dealer quoting around 500 bucks...

thanks keg75

yeah i'll get two keys... i guess one for me (and a spare) till I get my old girlie back or meet someone new. I just concerned about have only one key between multiple drivers in future if one key dies. i don't want to get caught out like last time but is it worth another 500 bucks or so for this...

anyone know the retail cost of them?

Fairly sure you can only have two keys at a time - each key has to be synced to the car (quite literally plugged in and connected) before working.

Good friend had a dealer lose a key, and get him a new one (using the above process). Dealer then found the key two weeks later, but it wouldn't work with the car. Said it was a two key max on the car.

No it's not. When I took delivery of my car, one of the keys was scratched. The dealer said no problem, we'll get you another set made up. I now have three sets of keys for my car.

Well this is all VERY handy to know. When I picked up my MkVI Adidas recently (2nd hand), I was told "Don't lose the key(s) because they are about ~$2800 to replace". I had a feeling that might have been and exaggeration at first but the sales-guy had an exact figure that he quoted me. Had me somewhat worried to say the least.

If they were $2,800, I would expect the metal fob, VW badge and keyring insert to be platinum with Diamond surrounds!

my dealer said that you can have more than 2.
I have 4 fully working keys (including remotes) for my T5 Transporter, and 3 for my Skoda Octavia. I have a vague idea there may be a limit of 5 or 6 per ECU at any one time.

Anytime you have a new key coded to the ECU you will need ALL keys to be present for recoding, any not there will no longer pass the immobiliser test (ie engine will start normally, then cut out after about 2 seconds with an immobiliser error msg/warning light)
