Hi All,
I am thinking of buying a used R32 next year. Maybe a 2008 model but I actually prefer the 2006 R32 rims :)
Anyways, can I ask what are the differences between a 2006,2007,2008 and 2009 R32? I am after a 5 door DSG as wife can't approve for a manual :)
Reasons for choosing an R32 over the GTI was AWD and the sound of the exhaust :)
Are there any problems I should look out for? And also what are the service intervals and costs?
Cheers,
K.

not trying to sound blunt (and everyone will say the same thing... :brutal:), use the search function as there are endless number of threads covering what you are asking... :google:
to start off, if you are wondering what the differences are between the GTI vs .:R32 check this thread:
http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=37274
For stuff about the .:R32, this is also a handy post:

welcome to the forums though and good luck finding a suitable ride! looking forward to seeing some new pics of your ride as well

Actually...he's not after the difference between the GTI & the .:R32.
He wants to know the difference across the years (2006 - 2009) of the .:R32.
Cue Maverick's intro music
Also...welcome to the forums matey. R32. Only choice is colour. Go for it!

earlier ones only had the half height MFD and zolder wheels.
later models had full height mfd and omaynt wheels.
(obvious differences)
some subtle changes from memory were things like the cruise control light stays lit on the dash when switched to on regardless whether it is in cruise mode. and esp light stays lit when switched off. (as opposed to in late models, cruise control light only came on when in cruise mode and esp light flashes when switched off)

Thanks guys for the info. So I guess not much of a difference from 2006-2009 R32's :)
What is a MFD?
And if I get one without the RNS 510 unit can it be fitted on at a later stage? Or will it cost a bomb to do this through a dealer :)
Cheers,
K.

Mfd is the multi function display. If i were u, id get a car with full height mfd as there are options u can change in it without using vagcom.
U can retrofit a rns, but source it yourself. People here can help u with that.

my ancient 2007 vintage model doesn't even have mp3 cd player! mechanically it's all the same though. I also choose the sound over the tunability of the gti

Thanks guys for the info.
Can I ask which models onwards have the full height MFD? 2007-2009?
Also should I steer clear of used R32's which are more than 60000kms? Or km's will be irrelevant for this type of car?
Cheers,
K.

A question for all R32 owners, do you prefer the look of the MKV R32 or the new up and coming R next year? :)

Even tho I prefer the v6 sound if I had the cash to throw at a new one I would definitely be waiting. The oem power and torque is awesome 199kw and 350nm 0-100 in 5.5secs? No brainer.

That's an easy one... I prefer the MK5, only because I think it has a nicer rear end than MK6...

I thought the same thing but there would be more lag like with the GTI's, and you'd lose out in changing over. That's not to say I wouldn't get one down the track, just don't think I'd get rid of my .:R early to get one as they may not be that much better (but newer stuff always seems nice). Also invested a bit of time and $$ into mine so don't want to piss it off too soon!

Hopefully I can find a R32 DSG 5 door mid next year. Maybe a 2008/2009 model.
Late starter :)
If I have a budget of $45k would it be achievable?

Just look on carsales.com.au. hopefully R32 owners don't sell them too cheap :P.

my advice is get the MK5 R32 and get a MANUAL! Have a read thru the forum on how much problems people have with those gearboxes. Its a great idea having 2 clutches but the s### that comes with it is just not worth it IMO.

Hi,
So is the DSG on the R32 a nightmare? I have no choice as wife needs an automatic...
When is the major service due for a MKV R32?
Cheers,
K.

60K with the DSG oil and filter change will be your biggest pocket hit. DSG can be expensive if they go wrong but not all do...........VW...........

I hope you are speaking from experience or are you just quoting what youve read on an internet forum... where by the way you only hear of peoples problems normally amplified by other people re quoting other peoples problems.:(
There are prob millions of satisfied DSG and many millions of manual owners around the world.
Both have issues. ... both have satisfied owners/followers.
VW know of the DSG issues and are now fixing the peripheral components that seem to be giving them issues. (re 6 speed R32 type)
Not all, prob only a small minority have any probs at all.
Most probs seem to be from manual owners who cant get over the fact that an automated manual box can work as good as they can :emo_baghead:
If you can afford an R32 the cost of a major service every couple of years isnt going to mean much.

I've never owned a car with a DSG gearbox but i have driven quite a few and you are right, it does a better job in changing gears than i ever could, but it takes away the fun and control that you can have with a clutch pedal. All that i have said is my personal opinion and nothing more. I love manuals, i think they break down much less (if you know what you are doing) and they are much more fun. I drove a car with DSG for a few days and after the first day i found myself driving in "D" like i would with a regular auto. even then it was shifting to 6th at 65km/h, it was confused a few times, and it was lazy off the mark.
So, people who like DSGs, good for them, try not to break it, but for me, manual all the way

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you here. I have driven mostly manuals all of my driving life.
1) you call constanly having to push a pedal in and out fun?
2) I always drive in manual mode which takes days of driving to get used to, but once you get to know the car and optimum engine speeds for each gear its exactly the same as a manual except quicker in gear change.
VW are genius's imo

I've got a 6MT and don't regret it one bit, and does help you feel more connected with the car as well as keeping your mind going.
DSG is a good thing and i'd probably get one in the future but figured once you get sick of the manual changing/paddles you'd just drive it like any other automatic car. Good for driving in traffic or if you're missus needs to drive it.

There you go.
One vote for Manuals
One for DSGs.
No real grounds either way:P
Thread prob has nothing more to offer
