Are they really worth the money? got one priced at the $110 mark recently.

I've got a K&N panel filter in my current car (Not a vw sadly), it helped a little with the engine when you rev it out (revs out more freely) and it changed the engine note a little (but more throaty).

Some people have put them in cars and dynoed them, I think the best I've read about is a 1-2kw increase...

Yeh, well it helped mine a little bit and I dont see why it'd be different on a golf (my current ride is a rice burner).

Yeah, in my opinion. Noticeable when you switch from a paper to gauze (K&N or other) a nicer induction sound knowing your definately less restrictive on the intake. Only comment I have on K&N is the rubber lining to fit inside the standard airbox seems a bit too thick. I found it difficult to close the airbox. I currently have a JR filter (blue dye colored instead of red for K&N) with a good fit in the standard air box. I dont know if its the same with other air boxes & K&N but for the MK2 GTI (33-2020 K&N part No.) this is what I can add to the thread. Company reply to my comment about the thick rubber was "to provide a better seal" :o

As for the money, depends which type was quoted to you at $110 ? Just the filter element in standard air box or a cone kit ? My filter elements only costed around $60

Mine was a very tight fit as well, I actually got the guys at the service to put it in in the end because I wasn't certain that it was sealing properly. They managed to get it in okay...

It was a filter element in the box. I'm buying this though from evorobin though instead :)

As has been said already, a K&N will help your engine suck in air easier.

The good thing too about K&N's is that they have one for pretty much any make of car, even my old '86 Mazda 626 carby :o

I am thinking of putting an apexi power intake into my golf vr6 instead though, why? To be a bit different, and because of this: http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/.

You could get a BMC CDA for less than 200 pounds!

Rock on BMC!!!

Got to this point and thought the hell with it, who needs an air filter anyways ;)

And all done, what pod filter officer? its just a sticker, its tricks the car into going faster.

Many thanks to Evorobin for supplying me the setup.

Does anyone know if you need to buy the k&n cleaning fluid or can you use something else?

Looking good mate. I really noticed the difference at high revs although it does sound nice full stop. Make sure the throttle is opening all the way. I put a new throttle cable in when I had a pipercross and all of a sudden it sounded medieval

I'm going to chase down a slightly smaller diamater pipe to run down into the bumper for cold air, it was a little to close to the belts for my liking.

Nice write up Matt.

Does it Go / Sound Better??

It isn't quite as deep as my old hacked up airbox thanks to Beau :) but it has better sounding note, it also seems to rev a bit easier. Will give it a good test on the way upto sydney tomorrow.

There are a couple of brands that make similar things but not sure if you can really use them with a K&N. They may have different formulations/cleaning agents....

The K&N stuff is good anyway because it's oil is pink so your not as likely to over saturate the filter, and it doesn't cost that much (the $20-30 investment will last you a hell of a long time).

Yeh i suppose its safer to use the k&n fluid, i thought it was more expensive

can use pretty much anything, finerfilter, bmc, drift (autobarn/saas) they all work, but be prepared for a colour change if you change brands of cleaner kits.

I used K&N cleaning stuff on my old K&N filter on my old car.

Worked fine. $30. Hardly used any of it.

And if you care, using anything but K&N will void the 1,000,000Km warranty...

Personally, i don't think my car will last a million K's, even though it is a VW... :D

Having said that, I use K&N. I got the kit (oil and cleaner) for $24 on special, and i've had it for 3 cars now. Had K&N's on every car i've owned (except a sigma with rams and foam filters) and they are great at high revs, but don't do much down low...

Don't expect a miraculous performance boost, and it'll be worth the dosh. Expect an F1 car, and you'll be seriously dissapointed ;)

Take into account that you'll never have to buy another paper panel filter for the life of the car, and it's a baragin in disguise i reckon...

My 2 cents :D

John

I was thinking that (about not having to buy paper filters), but my K&N equals roughly 15 OEM paper filters, which is 150,000k's worth. My current car has 75,000 on it and I'm working on trading it in for a golf... In my case the filter want a bargain in disguise...

My personal opinion is they are just a marketing tool . We tried them on the race cars and certain types slowed us down up to 1 sec a lap around wakefield . Stick with OEM with a decent pick up , the factory spent a fair whack of money to get the flow right for the car . Money better spent elsewhere

what by sticking massive restrictors in the airbox intake?
We cut them out and it made a nice difference and the k&n pod has improved upon it again, i havn't got the cold air feed on yet though.
