I need a clutch alignment tool for my Golf, can anyone tell me where I can get one? Pulled the gearbox out the other day and something in the diff has broken and punched a hole in the gearbox casing through to the bell housing!

G'day Ross,

How are you? Sorry I haven't been in touch.

When I do my clutch's, I do it by eye, after pulling the gearbox's and clutch's out several times it becomes second nature and never have had a problem.

My close ratio box blew up the same way and it was the diff carrier bearing's exploding from axle tramp.
Blew a hole in the diff housing, bellhousing and soaked the clutch in gearbox oil and even dented the firewall!
Another common fault is the standard diff ring gear rivets letting go and doing the same damage.

Yeah a 12mm deep socket on an extension bar, or by eye. Check it is the same all the way round with the bolts 3/4 done up, then tighten.

Hmm that's how I have always done it too but on a normal clutch it is easier to see. It was a bit awkward getting the box out, I just don't want to be struggling because the clutch is out of line. I'll give it a go anyway.

GTI20V Are you saying that the crownwheel is riveted on?!?!? A broken bolt or rivet would be a logical explaination, I don't think the bearing has gone. It soaked the clutch in oil though, first thing i noticed was clutch slip. I had been up on 2 wheels quite a bit on a couple of bits of the track so there was a fair amount of shock going through it.

The ring gear has pressed rivets fitted from the factory. There is a ARP ringgear bolt kit that is available for the 020 diff's. Approx $80 US

I remember on the later cars that you can have trouble removing the trans because of the larger flywheel(210mm) The flywheel has a cutout in it so the RH driveshaft flange can clear. There is a lug on the flywheel that has to be lined up through the TDC hole and then the trans can come out without fouling on anything.
I think the lug is near TDC approx 33 degree's BTDC, but you see it when you turn the engine over and with the trans already out you will definetely see it!!
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers
