What do you think of this idea:

Tinted taillights

I freakin love the idea, but wouldn't know how to open the cluster up and tint only the red parts.

Ps. This is only photoshopped using red-eye reduction.

LOL I knew someone would pull the ricer card out. And while I agree, I can justify it by not tinting them black, just dark red (similar to R32 lights).

to me, it makes the non tinted parts stand out too much.

Go for it, its a considerable improvement in my books, and it blends in with the theme of the car.

I'd give it a miss or you'll have to change your name from "maca" to "ricer"

*yawn* individuality obviously doesn't run very strong in the MKV forum... oh wait that's right your all over 40 :P
Don't worry Maca, I'm pretty sure they're all just waiting to get their superannuation to get into the mod bug...

LOL.. I don't mind it. I think the lights are a bit darker on the R36 than the std Passats, but not as dark as in Maca's pic. Looks good on mine.

Maca, i reckon that'd look pretty cool, itd match perfectly with your front grill.. but before anything, you need to get those bumpers colour coded... :P

Haha good one!! But seriously to they look ricer? I knew people would think that but I never actually thought they looked it as well..

That reminds me, when I got my bumper replaced the beater cut an old section out and sprayed it for me. If I can find it, I'll post a few pics up of what it looks like :google:

Yeah the R taillights are darker than the standard model, and I think they looks tops. Don't know if I'd go completely black though, maybe just dark red.

The chrome stands out too much when you go too dark. Also I doubt that you could get the lights apart without damaging them plus any darkening wouldn't be consistent.

Well there is this GT Golf I'm trying to make it look like. But that's another story :dancer:

Not worth the risk then.. I'll keep dreaming about it instead :P

You can always do the tinting on the outside of the red lenses so you don't have to pull apart any of the light assembly

And maybe tint the lights a bit too so that the bling bling doesn't look too contrasting.

Wouldn't do it myself but I think looks good.
As mentioned previously colour code the bumpers.
What about colour codeing the lens just leaving the actual round lights.

You can put dark window tint directly on the outside.
works good, does not scratch off and can be removed later if required leaving the orig lenses.

Thanks for the video. That looks really good and simple but it sacrifices gloss IMO. I'm really fussy so I most likely won't do it as I'll want to pull off the lense, tint the red parts darker (leaving the LEDs clear) then replace the lense.

I think if you had it mildly tinted (kinda like the R32/R36 like others mentioned) it would look meaner - certainly adds a depth and stance to the rear end. Go for it, but not too dark. all the best

I think it looks good as it suits the theme of the overall look you're trying to achieve with the car. Maybe the photochop is a bit too dark but I think it doesn't hurt to have some individuality :)

Cheers, I wouldn't go completely black (similar to GLI/R32 tails). I wanted a set of GLI taillights but they have red turn signals, and that's probably a defectable offense..

Except that only the middle (smaller) circle is clear. The rest (red) is tinted :)
Making it all clear looks like all the dodgy IS lexus clear light copies you see on crappy commodores everywhere.
Anyway, if you like it then that is all that matters.

Take a leaf out of the 30 hours I spent on tail light related painting and just DON'T. Buy it how you want it. Tail lights are mission impossible if you open them and even painting them sometimes the same process that worked perfect on one side goes pear shaped on the other.

True that. Some Jettas in the USA have the Altezza style lights as standard:

Ps. Love the look you're going for with your 32 :google:

I agree, it's just too risky and knowing me I won't be happy with it. That'll result in my buying new OEM parts to replace the ones I screwed thus wasting time and money.

I would suggest trying to buy some lights from the US or Europe that may be special edition ones that are already similar to the look you're after Alex.

Otherwise, I think that the little photoshop you did could work looks-wise if you just tinted it a slightly darker red rather than black, but it'd be a lot of work and trial and error.

Having installed the Valeo LHD OEM LEDs on my Pirelli and having to do the reversing and fog lens switch on them prior to installation.

I know for a fact that trying to get the outer lenses off the houses requires you to break tabs. The lenses are not screwed in but glued on. I would also advise against it bec it would be a bitch to reseal the housings again.

Are the R36 housings the same?

Thanks for the info :). I'm not too sure if the R36 housings are the same but I don't think so, IIRC they'er slightly longer.

hey Maca!

looks pretty cool and would suit your car, but, as others have mentioned, i reckon it would be a pain-in-the-ass job. maybe source some of the US non-LED ones you were telling me about...

ps. those US Altezza jetta tail lights look woeful

Haha thanks mate. And yeah, it sounds like too big of a job and risk for it to come out as planned. I'd love a set of those GLI tails but they have the red indicator :duh:. Something to get defected for...
