Hi guys(and girls),

I just bought a mkV R32 and I am thinking of getting a new geniune gps system installed from VW. Its expensive but I use my car for work for a couple of hours a day and I hate those stupid navman units they clutter up the car with cables and crap.

Anyone had any experince with the currently available gps?

Cheers

If and Only IF.... you want to try after market... you can get an WD6050 or WD6150 for about $400 US $$.

My WD6050 is good and so is Morty's unit.

I second that, maybe not as good as the Lexus unit but still quite user friendly.

Thanks for the help guys. Did you say Lexus unit? Is that the factory fitted vw one? What about the dynaudio sound system? Could they integrate that in with the factory gps maybe? I wonder how much that would cost.

I love the car but the stereo blows compared to the macintoish unit in my 3rb liberty.

Thanks guys. But I'm not about to rip my dash open and start losing bits! I would rather pay the extra cash and get the genuine one that works with everything. That way if theres any dramas i can just take it back to vw and tell 'em to fix it.

Also keen on that dynaudio system, Does anyone know if it can be ftted to a mkv?

Cheers

Not a bad idea. If you're happy to pay for the genuine unit I don't think you'd be disappointed as everything works like it should.

I assume the dynaudio package is a factory-only install (for mk6 golf onwards) but it wouldn't be hard for a good car audio shop to install the Dyn 342 or 362 speakers which retail from ~$1500 depending if you chose the 8" or 6.5" midbass (would recommend the 8"). Not sure exactly what the VW Dyn speakers are but the after market ones would be better at a guess.

You'd still want an after market amp to get the most out of them anyway.

Thanks G-rig. What about the head unit? Does the factory gps have a decent head unit? Do you know if its a 6 stacker? Where can you buy the dyn speakers aftermarket? Sorry for all the questions.

If by 'factory gps' you mean the RNS-510 it is a single cd unit, however, can connect to an external stacker. It also has a hard drive built in, so you can load quite alot of music onboard - this tends to be the general preference over a stacker. The RNS-510 is a very very good piece of kit, look forward to voice activation in a firmware coming soon etc

Thanks gmk2. I found a few on eBay in Europe. Some say version B and one says version C. I rang VW and was quoted $4500 installed for the "New" version that is optioned out for the mkVI gti. Would that be the same or newer do you think?

Most of the answers were covered above, but as far as the Dyn's give Drew at Northfield Moorooka a call up here, he may know of a good car audio place in Adelaide but he's the importer for Dynaudio so a good place to start.

The RNS-510 sounds great with my Audison BitOne.1 processor and Arc amps which proves it usually the speakers and amps that need upgrading first so the HU wont be the weak point. It's integration with the MFD is great (shows the compass and audio as well as phone book and recent call lists if you buy the bluetooth later), and things like the brightness sensor and auto night/day switching work automatically as you'd expect. Some of the cheaper look-a-like units have annoying bugs like can't play music while the camera or GPS is activated, and the screens are hard to see during the day.

thanks for the info g-rig. I have a pair of dynaudio contour floor standing s3.4's in my lounge and would jump at the chance to get such a sound in my car.

Hey G-rig I just found your post on mobile electronics site. That head unit is exactly what I’m after! Whats that piece of kit in the ashtray? How did you get the MFD to do display audio info? Is that the standard MFD? Pics of your r32 are great! I can see it sits nice and low, what suspension mods have you done? Man I gotta stop drinking too much coffee in the morning!

Dynaudio seem to be pretty good

Haven't heard or seen their home audio range but imagine it would be nice. I've got Magnat speakers at home that sound pretty nice, they used to have a big range of car audio but we didn't really get it over here.

Which thread did you see, the show off your ride & install (previously had an Alpine HU)? The MFD automatically shows audio info with the stock 6cd unit as well as the RNS-510. Glad you liked the pics, i wanted put some up to show the various integrated menus etc.

I've got H&R Street Performance Coilovers and H&R Sways (Front: 24mm, Rear: 26mm), and had Haldex Gen II.

Stock suspension is a bit spongy especially in the front during hard cornering. I need more feedback. Fitted whitline rear and front sways to my lib 3rb and some sti springs. Completely tranformed thar car.

Hows the ride? Is it a bone shaker? I havent had experince with H&R. Are you still running factory struts? A few years ago I put some Bilstein sprints and eibach springs in a honda accord v6. Handing was amazing. Very progressive.

Scuse my ignorance but what is a haldex gen II?

If you dont mind me asking what sort of dollars did they charge for the unit. Is it more favourable than vw themselves?

The ride is very good considering the ride height. The rebound feels a lot better and got rid of that under-dampened feel the stock suspension has. There is still some tug and release noise when turning the steering wheel at parking speeds, but only a minor niggle which can be fixed.

Ok I'm starting to learn more about my new car thanks guys. I realise that the mk5 gps is the RNS-510. I went in to solitaire vw today and sat in the new gti. Wow what fantastic fit-out. I love my R32 but I'm jealous! Anyway, the new gps is something completely different. Can anyone tell me what the model number of this unit is? I have found plenty of RNS-510 units on ebay for around AUS$900, would it be possible to find the new one to purchase somewhere overseas? VW quoted me $4500 to fit and supply the new gps into my mkV, ridiculous!

Cheers

As G-Rig mentioned there is no new GPS, it's still the RNS 510.

Perhaps you're getting confused with the new standard head unit the RCD 510?

I doubt you've seen the RNS 510 in ebay selling for AUD$900, they're most likely the Chinese knockoffs (rubbish IMO). You can pick up second hand RNS 510 for ~$1100-$1500 and new units from Europe for ~$2000.

The list price for a RNS 510 from the dealer is listed on my website below but dealers do not have to supply them for that (and the margin is really tight and i wouldn't sell them for that price)

Bizarre. Must have been seeing things. I sewear it looked different. I'm sure it only had three square buttons on either side rather than four. Maybe I'm going crazy.

Anyway there are plenty of units for sale on ebay for around $800-$900.

I'm sorry Maverick. I coudn't work out how to find it on your wesite.

Can you give me a direct link?

I need to get a factory gps real soon as I use my car for work to go to appointments in the day and the navman is going to be jetisond soon!:brutal:

That looks real but be wary of new sellers etc. Usual ebay warnings apply.
