View Full Version : What have you done to your Audi today??

h100vw

I'll start a thread off seeing as I did actually work on mine today. Well it started yesterday to be truthful. Finished this morning.

Haldex oil and filter change, thanks Jimmy for the parts and filter tool.

Due to a schoolboy error though, I dropped the diff oil first, not the haldex!! So it's also got fresh diff oil too. 1 litre of synthetic Castrol 75/90.

Note to self, there is a washer under the head of the Haldex drain plug. More schoolboy errors!! Found after putting in the oil and plug the first time.

I also replaced the rear discs and pads, new discs and pads from GHLmotorsport in Brissy. On the front I fitted the discs of my A3 as they were pretty new when the car got parted out. With new pads from GHL.

I'll make some comments on the pads in the next week or so. They are supposed to be pretty much dust free, I hope so cos the Audi ones that came out were shocking.

sounds like you had a busy day . ive spent about four hours checking all the connection and fluids of my 80 auto as ive had it not want to change up to top gear a couple of time over the past week and then yesterday coming back from the coast it just didnt want to change up at all ? smooth changing to ever gear but top . still cant work it out .

h100vw
11-10-2009, 03:12 PM
I am no Auto expert but I wonder if a fluid change would be a worthwhile job to do. Some friends of mine had a crappy old Mazda that wouldn't change and it had no fluid in.

Maybe call a couple of auto transmission shops and ask?

Gavin

What age is your 80??? They had a few different boxes in them, older ones had a plate on the valve body that would wear and cause the oil to bypass. Newer ones can be scanned by someone who has a older diagnostic adapter.
Engine and age please mate
Jmac

vwpolo
11-10-2009, 04:59 PM
it a 92 2.3 80 e it has an ng motor and the only code for the auto is whats on the sticker for vehicle data in the spare wheel mould which is ceb i hope this is the right codes as the engine code on that sticker is different to the motor and rego papers , maybe my good bye is to good to be true..

Jmac

Ive got an Audi with the NG strong as an ox that motor mate. Anyway CEB is correct and this can be checked by Vagcom if someone near you has the old style adapter, you can check the valve operation and scan for faults.

$80 for blasting, $200 for painting and some beer of course. I paid a guy at work that paints aircraft. Just because he has all the stuff to do it. I could have done it from cans but never found the time.

Providing there's no lumps missing, a home job would be easy to do.

Missed that comment Dave. The paint was some left over from a 1960s DB5 that he painted. I like the colour and it cost 30 cans of Westend Draught. So was the right price exactly!:P

Just replaced the front ARB bushes which were squeaking like a herd of mice.

Also did an inner CV boot on it too. The car drew blood which ticked me off! But it's back together now and silent.

Still not blackened my ring s.

I am stiffer now though, after fitting the brake stiffening kit from the recent group buy.

Can't comment on any improvement yet as backing out of the garage doesn't constitute a test drive. :P

Did intend to drop the gearbox oil and redline it. Then found the special tool I bought doesn't work. I just need a 14mm allen key.

Anyone needing the use of a tamperproof M16 spline drive let me know. Mine was $20, which was cheap.

gareth_oau

h100vw, what was your process for blackening your front grill/rings?

any complications or tricky bits?

h100vw
18-12-2009, 08:58 PM
All started out by stripping the grill from my A3 that got wrecked. The trim and rings are easy to unclip with the grill off.

Then I cleaned them up with soapy water and a nail brush. Dried in the sun and wiped with some panel wipe to get the greasy finger prints off.

Sprayed with high build primer and then satin black over the top.

When the time came to fit them though, it started to go wrong....

I managed to get the grill off without removing the bumper, which was a chore. I fitted the rings and then discovered that the outer trim is different on the S3 from the A3.

So my quick swap ended up being a bit longer, while I painted the outer trim.

That pretty much covers it.

It was along time coming but having bought the Red line MTL before Christmas I finally drained the box and put it in there.

While I had the car in the garage, I dropped the oil and filled it up with some Fuchs synthetic.

Use your VCDS mate instruments (17) then adaption, enter channel 02 and set it to 00 and save, done. Some of the older A4 used other channels and had to be set individually but 02 should be the go with the A3

My A4 has been bugging me with a glitchy boost fault pretty much since ive owned it ( going into limp so no leaks before we all jump) but more so after upgrading the software. Finished early today so at last had some time to check her out. removed the ECU which has been replaced ive noticed so had a smile there. Anyway keep getting the Lambda implausible signal fault pre cat so its the important one and is for sure messing with my mixtures to the point i thought i was going to p ut a hole in a slug this week, pinging its head off. Not good. So back to driving like miss daisy again till its fixed. Checked with diagram and found wrong 02 sensor is fitted:eek: its a start, new sensor Monday and hopefully i can put the lid on it.
Used Vagcom to do a log of a drive in closed loop and watch it all go pear shaped. Tried my Diagun palm pilot just for laughs, it picked it up too.
Update soon with result.
Put it through the hand car wash also and soon showed JASN78s efforts again with his clay bar, came up mint again. .
Getting closer to having it nailed i think:rolleyes:

Lambda sensor pre cat fitted. seemed a whole lot better, cant be that easy, yeah it wasnt. Lambda fault gone though pleased to say , i think the real culprit is rearing its head. System lean!!!!! thought so i heard it ping a few times and logged plenty of timing pull, engine has new coils and platinum plugs as a rule. So now going to go for a drive with a fuel pressure gauge on , just to make sure, i suspect the fuel pump ( filter is new) and if that checks good then it calls for the one and only smoke test, ordered a smoke machine so quitley hoping i can diagnose my car with it:rolleyes:

Well its been a full on week and a half for my new car, have owned and a4 b4 for 3 odd years now which is the wifes car(family car) finally had enough of my mk2 and bought an a3 8l turbo, really like the fit and finish of the audi's and being a 2 door i had to have it.

I drove it for a week and through the punctuality of Gavin (aka h100vw) and the help of the Camden GTI crew (soon to be Custom Code Agents) i had the ecu Custom Code flashed. Made so much difference and when the rain finally stopped i could truely appreciate the custom code remap in all its glory.and now to today i built up a cold air intake with a k and n filter.

really happy with the results and transformation of the 20v, now just need a few more bits n pieces

Well just got back from Newwy and have to say it was one of the most comfortable trips to date, i sound surprised? yeah i only get to roadtest these and only get to drive mines every now and again . Fuel consumption got down to 6.6L per 100!!!!( Flashed A4 1.8T) So impressed, i did the whole trip on 3/4 tank!! was still running around Nelson bay Sunday on the same tank. Nice to sit back on cruise and let it do its bit . On the way home had some head wind and couldnt crack the 6s again but managed to top 7.1L so still very good. Dvd players in the rear best buy in moons!!!!! kids were like mice. Highly recommended.

Are you buying it back?

Dunno, we have to agree on a salvage value.

WARNING, all Shannons policys do not include an automatic right to salvage!!!!!!!
The could write of your pride and joy and take it away.!!
I pointed out they would have to claw the Rocco out of my dead hands and they said that people get first option, but its not automatic!!

Also had a fat row with them a few weeks ago about how they automatically depreciate a daily driver, even when it is at agreed value.
We negotiated on numbers a bit, but it was still gonna go from $20k to $17k on the 1st of April. She smashed the car on 20th March, so it still at the higher value.

The assessor has agreed that it will be written off and now its up to the total loss team!!!! Inspiring name.

If thay want silly money for it, they can take it, if its a bargain, I will have it.

I kinda dont want to pull it apart though as its been such a good family car for us.
Wouldnt be a very hard fix though for a skilled panelbeater.

Got the call from Shannons Today.
Car is total loss so they are sending me a cheque minus the salvage value, so I am keeping the wreck.

This weekend I did a bath, vacuum, new floor mats (from our sale - B6 mats worked in the rear and were way cheaper than b5 mats), new 710 diverter valve, and nearly did lowering springs but I'm still on the boat for lowering springs/coil overs.
