Ive got some 15inch bbs wheels on my golf now, the ones that come on vr6's. Its been converted to the 5 stud. I wanna know wat size rims and rubber can i fit on it. Im planning on some 17 or 18 inch golf 4, new beetle wheels but i dunno wat sizes will fit, im afraid if it will guard rub or wont fit at all cause it will hit the bottom of the shock. Can anyone give measurements or advice for the newer wheels.

17's will be fine with 205/40/17 tyres, but it depends on the offset (ET) of your rims, ET 35 to ET 25 is the best for a rim thats 7.5 wide.

I wouldnt go wider then 7. I had a set of 15x7 with et 25, and I got scuffing on front and back with 195's.... I would think ET above 35 might be slightly better. Wider than 7 and you will get problems if you drive like this....

Also, dont go bigger than 17. At 17 you will already be losing acceleration compared to a car on 15 or 16's... I have seen a Mk1 on 18's and it is not pretty. You wont be able to drive it the way it was intended to be driven.

VW have some pretty sweet 17" rims. There is a Mk3 VR6 in Melbourne with the 17's off the Bora V5/V64mo.....

i've got 17's on my mk3 - potholes are your worst nightmare - be prepared for using the timber mallet or getting someone to fixem for you unless you have got super smooth roads - speaking from experience

so re: 18's - wouldn't takem in a pink fit!

Have run 18s 17s 16s etc
On a mk2 16s are great all round size 7 in wide et 35/38
They look good and are hard to pick from a 17 anyway and tyres are cheaper and more compliant height for everyday use.
18s are stupid and are silly money to buy .They are only for posers.
Down the track you'll be glad you didn't waste your money.

im looking at 17's now, price for tyres isn's really a issue as im a apprentice mechanic and can get em cheaper anyway. Thanks for all the advice it is really helpful, i was just worried cause my dad has a spare 17 inch rim laying around with no tyre on it and i put it on my golf and there wasnt too much room between the rim and the bottom of the shocker tower(about 10cm? it was a while ago).

Ok, i looked at my wheels the other day they have a offset of 35 and it just rubs over big bumps. They are the passat vr6 wheels. Is it the bigger the number is the more it sticks out or the other way round?

Take note from those that have done it before .
Stick to 35s and 7 inch wide or have rubbing trouble.
You will end up hating 17s only good for posing. 8)
