View Full Version : 20 Inch Rims On The Tiguan

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has put 20 inch wheels on their Tiguan or if they fit.

I am considering the Audi Q7 20 inch wheels, 9 inch wide with 275/45 tyres and VW centre caps.

Apart from looking the goods, the 45 wall should still provide a decent ride quality, after all, these 20's are standard upgrade wheels for the Q7 (the entry level Q7 models have 18 inch wheels standard), albeit a bigger vehicle.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/09/Q720Inch2-1.jpg

I am looking at getting replicas which look very convincing. If the 20 inch wont fit, they are also available in 18 inch which are 8 inch wide and i imagine would have 255/55 tyres.

I have seen the 45 wall and it actually looks ok, nothing like the stip of liquorice look thats for sure. Not too fussed about offset as i imagine i will get the chunky/wide stance/X5 look from the additional width of the wheel itself...could i be wrong here?

Comments welcome

You've gotta do some math behind your wheels. 275/45/20 is about a 30" diameter. Stock is 27". If that would even fit under the wheel wells, your speedo would be about 10% off.

If you really wanted to do 20s, you would have to get tires with an aspect ratio of 35. 255/35/20 or 265/35/20 would work. Ride comfort would be seriously compromised. Go with 19s if you want to go big and really 255/40/19 is about as big of a tire as you should go. Make sure wheel offset is ET32-35 if you want chunky stance that is still correct. For 18s, 255/45/18 or 235/50/18 is the correct tire size.

If you want to compare tire sizes go here;

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

20"s have been done on the Tig not that big a deal, just gotta get the right offset and tyres. As a general rule of thumb stay at least 3% either side of your original tyre diameter.

Thanks Sanman, Pullstarter and Transfer,

Some comprehensive advice on the 20 inch option.

The wheel arches look so big on the Tig, i was hoping to keep a decent wall on the tyres but then, ofcourse, "the man" and his laws...damn killjoy.

I liked the decent tyre wall for ride quality, these wheels dont come in 19 inch, its an odd size it seems.

damn damn damn:mad:

just another note. audi q7 wheels wont fit any way.

they run larger 5x130 PCD fittings.

i have a feeling this is because the toureg was designed in conjuction with the porsche cayenne ( which the audi q7 is somewhat a derivative of ).

the tiguan has a 5x112 PCD similar to most audis vws and mercedes.

If you realy want to run a Q7, Touareg or Porche Cayenne wheel you could get a FK Automotive 25mm bolt on spacer/PCD adapter with a 5 x 130 to 5 x 112 and brings the Q7 ET50 offset to the required 35.

I am getting some 20"RS6 Replica wheels which I plan to run either 245/40/20 and 275/35/20 which give 27.7" rolling diameter for tad more sidewall as oposed to the required 27" which come on the 255/35/20 tyre, hopefuly the 0.7" or 17.78mm won't make much of a difference as far as steering clearance goes. Or if you want to be adventureous try squeezing in a set of BMW X5 spec 275/40/20 front and 315/35/20 tyres, might not fit but they sure would look the part:biggrin:.

Just fitted tyres some 255/35/20 Godyear eagle F asymmetric http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+F1+Asymmetricto the RS6 replicas wheels. Decided to stick with te 255/35/20 over a 245/40/20b to keep the rolling diameter to stock spec and chose the German made Goodyaer over the Continental Contact sport etreme because of a crazy deal I got at US$107 a tyre which ended up been just over AU$250 shipped to my door Fedex plus they rate a small step down from the Michelin PS2. Got quoted from Kmart tyre and auto $745 each for a replacement, still they did a good job fitting and banancing them for $20 a pop..

Here is a link of where I got te tyres fom if any one wants to find a bargain.

?? I posted a couple of pics of the tyres on the wheels on the page 2? They are Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetrict 255/35/20 made in Germany to keep things in the family ;-), the size is the same as what is on the ABT and Caractere setups at 27" rolling diameter which is .4 mm off the stock 16" tyre.

Should look good on the Tig.
I think 20" is a bit too much but if it's just for road use and you can justify the cost of tyres than it should make the Tig stand out.

Nice shoes you have chosen as well, New RS6's are definitely growing on me.

Can't remember if I mentioned it but wheels are ET35 offset where most of the Audi replicas available in Aus. are ET45, I wanted the 35 offset that's why I got them from the US, they will be closer to the outer edge but then again the savanagh 19 has a 33 offset so 2mm extra outward and it runs a 255 tyre.

I will try and get 16 and 20 side on shot since I will be doing one wheel at a time.

Took the car for a test drive and the wheel alignment was still spot on and tracked well so the 35 offset and 255/35/20 tyre size works as it should and no clearance issues what so ever. What's the DOVW (I am new to VDubs, the new ones anyway) and what time is it on might try to get down there, I am around the Chadstone area.

"Day of the Volkswagen" is arguably the biggest annual VW gathering in Australia. Cranbourne Racecouse, which about a half an hours drive from Chaddy. Check out the "Clubs, Meets and Events" section. Forum members from all over Australia make it a must attend event each and every year.

Doh, how did I miss that one , I normally go to the All Ford Day shows having a 1965 XP Futura hardtop which I have had as my first car and is an ongoing Hotrod/Pro-tourer project and most of the times I head out to the Canberra SummerNatts where I will be taking the Tig early next year.

Any way here are the pics with the H&Rs, pics could be better because of bad lighting and limited space.

Cranbourne shouldn't be too far down the southeastern fwy, just that having young kids I have to organise around them and or plan ahead, what time is DOVW, again the pics don't do it justice. Still needs some subtle body mods to set it off, maybye the authentic VW fender flares painted body color or the ABT or Caractere ones(not as subtle but there is worse out there. Not a big fan of body kits but it does need something to differentiate from a stocker, even if it is colrcoded bumpers and mouldings like an R-line.

Have the ride characteristics deteriorated to any degree?

Excellent work Cubes, you'll find that the springs will settle a little bit more over time too :)

What's the ride like? I'm looking at 20s, up from standard 16s.

What load and speed rating did you get on the tires?

Wow awesome wheels. Has to be the best wheels on a black Tig that I've seen so far. Makes me already want to ditch my 16" on my to be picked up vehicle from the dealer this Friday :( I'll be looking out for your car on the road :)

Sorry, but IMO it looks weird if you add big wheels and DON'T drop it ....

Unless you plan to take it off-road, in which case the performance wheels & tyres are pointless anyway, you need to drop it as the gaps between the wheels and the body makes it look awkward.

Dropping that Tig with those wheels will really make it look good ... and make it handle much much better.

Agree with Sharkie re looks a little weird, but yeh I dont want to lower my Tig either. has anyone checked out putting on bigger diameter tyres? Reckon larger diameter tyres would look great on the Tig, then no need to lower as wheel arch is filled and would actually increase clearance slightly. I'm aware there may be some legal and other issues to sort out, but I am at least considering for my remapped Tig. Contrary to the direction for most with a remap, I want to create more of a rally type weapon that can handle just about anything and still be fun on the tarmac.
I asked a tyre place and they weren't very encouraging. Anyone know much about it?

Not sure about NSW, but in QLD it is illegal to change the overall diameter of your wheels by more than 10%. Which is why 215-60-16s end up at 235-50-18s or 235-55-17s for intstance.

Going wider (which the Tigs could all do with both onroad and offroad) and then going larger profile, means you will quickly exceed that 10% and I've yet to find a reputable wheels shop willing to go beyond that 10% on manufacturers specifications.

In my case it was wider and lower profile, but the same principle applies I'm afraid.

I'd suggest you find a suitable wheel and then take it to a shop (not on the car) and tell them its for an off-road hilux or something and then fit them on the Tig when you need them..... at home yourself ....
