The word about oils first. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f77/vw-skoda-audi-factory-approved-oils-other-lubricants-49676.html

Enigine oil: Use the latest (highest) specification oil available. Oil is the cheapest part in your engine (drive train) and will be there for 15,000km or 1 year.
Transmission and gear oils: Unlike engine oils the different brands of transmission fluids shouldn't be mixed and the same apply to gear oils (even if they’re the same grade and specifications). Approved or meet oil specs more about it in HERE (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=126932)
Buying genuine servicing parts from the dealer and keeping the receipts may help should there be some doubts about faults related to maintenance during warranty period. For your and other road users safety, I suggest that you take your car to professional mechanic for your scheduled servicing.

The main headlights with gas discharge bulbs and cornering lights (AFS = Adaptive Front Lighting System) have a “bi-xenon” function.
With conventional “xenon” headlights, the gas discharge bulbs only generate the dipped beam. The “bi-xenon” features makes it possible to generate both the dipped beam and the main beam with “one” gas discharge bulb. To achieve this, an electromechanical adjuster (left dip beam screen motor -V294- or right dip beam screen motor -V295-) uncovers the screened area of the dipped beam on actuation of the main beam function, thus producing main beam light distribution.
This means that with “bi-xenon” headlights the main beam is always automatically adjusted together with the dipped beam.
The main headlights with gas discharge bulbs and cornering lights do not have an “additional main beam”.
The cornering light system consists of the following functions:
Swiveling main and dipped beams (dynamic cornering lights): at vehicle speeds in excess of 10 km/h and steering turned.
Cornering light bulb (static cornering light): when turning into tight bends (bend radius < 500 m) or when turning a corner at vehicle speeds of less than 50 km/h

The cornering bulbs are a H7 55W and the Bi-Xenon is a D1S 35W. The parking bulbs are a H5W.

The manual states for oil - 501 01 or 502 00 for "non Long Life" serviced vehicles. The LongLife approved oil (504 00) is a higher quality and would also be fine. Australian vehicles do not fall under the Long Life service regime.

The thread has been ruthlessly tidied of unnecessary arguments. End of story.

It will remain unlocked for now, but further useless posts won't even touch the sides on their way out the back door.

The original post and my followup post state the oil requirements from the manual. If you feel the need to debate this then take it elsewhere or talk to your dealer / car expert / mate / dog / goldfish / someone who cares.

Isn't it variable?

Yes, but does this mean in normal driving conditions the R36 is running 100% front wheel drive? or is there some rear wheel bias?

100% FWD until slip is detected. This is standard for the Gen2 Haldex controller. You can upgrade the controller to a blue controller and get more aggressive (earlier and higher torque levels) transfer of torque to the rear wheels.

The car reverts to FWD mode when the brake pedal is touched - it takes a competition Haldex controller (a step above the blue) to remove this feature and maintain torque to the rear under braking.

DIY to install CANBUS Leds for the R36 front turn signal.

After doing some researching, I've found that my R36 has a similar type of connnector as found in the B6 Audi models (ie. reversed polarity connectors like the CK socket configurations ie. positive & negative swapped at the turn signal connector which is why Leds would not work when installed).
3157 Led Tail Light & Turn Signal Selection and Trouble Shooting Guide (http://autolumination.com/3157_led_selection_troubleshooting.html)
So I confirmed the polarity using a multimeter and tests using wires & LED as a test platform before going any further.

There may be other solutions but I choose this path.
1. Will need the following items (~30min):
- 2x Canbus Bay9s/H21W Leds (be mindful not to get LEDs with a large dimensions too as they may not fit into the hole in the turn signal assembly) I've still got a balance of 2 after selling 2x to Timlin. or 6pcs/lot high quality free shipping 9 SMD5050 bulbs ,baY9s lights,h21w led auto,baY9s canbus lights-in Light Source from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/BAY9S-H21W-CANBUS-LED-9-LED-SMD5050-bulbs-Canbus-LED-Error-Free-baY9s-auto-canbus-led/577514406.html)
- 2x automotive waterproof connectors from Jaycar Automotive Waterproof Plug & Socket Set - 2 way - Jaycar Electronics (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP2110)
- wire stripper, (+)screwdriver + crimping tool

2. Disassemble the turn signal housing using a (+) screwdriver.
3. Remove the housing and then twist the turn signal bulb assembly to remove it from the housing.
4. Remove the bulb and cut the wires making sure its long enough to install the connector in between. Install the wires and reverse the polarity at the new connector (brown wire to green wire vice versa)
5. Reverse the procedure for re-assembling the turn signal housing.
Done.

Does the R36 Haldex Coupling have a replaceable oil filter like the R32 golf?

The answer to my own question is no it doesn't have a replaceable filter. (At least not on the 2009 model)

Hi,
Can anyone specify the differences between the MY08, MY09, MY10 & MY10.5 models?

Elmura

I have different wheel weight of the standard 18" Omanyt wheel vs what user "gead" stated on the first page. I weighed mine with 50% worn tyre (Michelin Pilot Sport 3) and total weight was 23.4 kg. New MPS3 tyre is ~10kg based on tirerack.com specifications, so I'll allow 1.5kg weight loss for tread wear. This brings wheel weight to ~33 lbs (15kg).

As for the MY changes, I'm curious too. I know the MY10 I have has an LCD MFD dash display and blue needle instruments vs the red of the earlier series.

MY09 got White MFD with new cluster already
MY10 got the newer climate control
MY10.5 got MDI as standard

Hello, just to recap on the 19" (& 20") wheel questions for the R36 wagon, could anyone pls help out with the following info:

1) What is the actual centre bore on the R36? (found conflicting info)
2) What size tyres are you rolling on and how do they ride (strapes, bumps, noisy etc) on 19's or 20's?
3) Is there any wrong way of calculating the right fitment and tyres? I've had a look on willtheyfit.com and just trying to understand for real life how it reflects & what tyre width and profile etc (assuming standard R36 suspension thus far)...

Your assistance is much appreciated :withstupid:

Apologies, but I've been unable to find this information, nor do I currently have the time / tools to pull off my wheels.

Can someone please let me know if the R36 uses Wheel Lug Bolts of Wheel Lug Nuts? What should I be ordering when fitting after-market wheels (and subsequently are they both measured as M14x1.5 27mm?)

Thank you

They're bolts. Wheels only need to match the PCD of the wheel hub, have similar offset, and be at least as large a diameter & width of original so to maintain handling balance, braking balance, and AWD balance. You may need to read up some into this if you aren't staying with original spec.

Thanks Elmura - appreciate the response, that's super helpful.

The wheels meet all other specs and I'm quite comfortable with all the details; but was just stumped when trying to find (what I assumed were supposed to be) lug nuts for the R36.

Can i confirm that in terms of bolt specifications, I can still search for M14x1.5 27mm to find the right bolt?

Closing off my question for anyone searching in future.

Bolts are M14 x 1.5 and 27mm thread length.

I got some 28mm thread length bolts as they were closest I could find and grab in the style I wanted and did not have any issues being 1mm longer.

You'll see online items that seem to be a match for your car, but are generic for similar models. Hence, dealers & parts sellers use your VIN for accurate selection of parts. Double check before u buy. It's tricky. Most likely, it's the 345mm. It's been several years since I owned an R36

haha, thanks for reply, i asked one of the online part sellers. the answer was that i should measure the dimension myself. lol. since it is pretty tricky to get acurate reading with the wheels on, i should take off my wheel and then measure it. lol
