View Full Version : Cars you love/admire, but would never own.

So there are quite a number of cars I love and admire but would never own for various reasons. I'm sure I'm not alone here and would love to hear what others dig but wouldn't buy for whatever reason.

Here's some of mine:

Mazda FD RX7
They have to be one of my all time favourite shapes, but I couldn't own one because I have a stigma associated with rotaries. For example I believe they suck way too much juice and they're expensive to maintain. It doesn't help that I don't know much about rotary engines.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/09/3427614522_eaa186acc0_b-1.jpg

Nissan R32 Skyline GTS-T
Again, I love the shape of the R32 and love the history behind Godzilla. Why I couldn't own one? Well I hate the interiors, the roof lining always seem to sag, plastics fall apart and feel cheap, and too many douche bags own them lol.

FPV F6
Love the potential and I think they look sweet - just have a look at the R-spec or the FG. They'd have to be one of (if not the) best Australian produced car from factory. I don't see myself owning one because I feel like they are too big (I've had two Falcons before) and the quality isn't anything to get excited about.

BMW E30 M3
One of the best cars in history and really set a benchmark back in the day - and the start of the M. Too bad we didn't get any Aussie delivered RHD ones, otherwise I'd consider one down the track - and probably for the track ;)

And last but not least that deserves a very honorable mention:

MkIV R32
I know, I know: it's sacrilege. BUT they don't have enough performance potential for my liking - heavy and underpowered. And the worst part: no sunroof! In saying that, I still love 'em and think they are VW's best looking factory made car to date.

I might update with pics later.

So, tell us yours.

For Me it will be all the Evo range from evo 1 to evo 10.

Mitsubishi Evo is always my dream car since im 10 years old, but to bad! I'm grown up, and need something more comfortable, livable, and not boy racer car.
So I stick with the euro :)

Lets try to be realistic about some of these, because I know how many people on here want an E30 M3 (myself included) but could not feasibly afford one, so I'll start with one car I could actually afford, well maybe not the maintenance lol...

Alfa 147 GTA, 250hp 3.2V6 and no LSD...

Citroen DS, I saw one in white today and I still adore it so very much

ok my choice for this list is 944turbo, my old man owns one and between that and the vl turbo calais he owned (yeah i know) lol influenced my lov for turbo cars. But the Porsche is still one of the greatest cars Ive driven esp for a 20 yr old thing. (reason for not owning) if you have seen costs of service bills you will no why

The other car on my list is an r32gtr i dont care about the other models the original is still the best, hell i was buying one b4 the polo and no matter what any1 says until u have driven one in anger you really dont know what the godzilla tag is all about. (my reason for not owning besides parts) it really is an instant loss of license car at best at worst it would have killed me

A lot of older European/English cars that are totally inpractical. What I can think of right now is a BMW 2002 - I wanted one before I decided to go VW:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/09/800pxBmw_02_2_v_sst-2.jpg

My Dad drove one of these (Triumph Herald) before I was born but left it to rot away in the shed :( Wish he kept it:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/09/TriumphHerald_04-2.jpg

And I've wondered what it would be like to have something like this as a daily driver (1940s Sunbeam Talbot - not many made and the owner of this one kept parking on my street):

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2008/08/Photo0099-1.jpg

Might add more later if I think of them.

EDIT: Love the Citroen!

An original Mini - infinitely cool but you wouldn't want to get into a crash. Old means expensive, too.

I would have to say a lot of new VW's and Audi's as much as I like them, I would not buy one. I don't like driving newer cars, just don't have enough soul or character for me not sure what it is with me  I had a mk2 and it felt new and refined :)

I have been into Valiant Charger's since i was about 12 years old, would love to own one but I can't justify the money they go for now. Would love to have an E49 tucked up in my garage, same with an XU1 Torana.

E30 M3 comes to mind also...

Yup I know, they're just getting rare and expensive and like all old cars come with a handful of problems to sort out (rust being the main one) that I just wouldn't be able to deal with without spending too much cash.

Hmmmm...for me it would have to be something like the Lamborghini Murcielago or an Aston Martin. They're absolutely stunning cars and the engineering and design is flawless to me in my little world, but I could never own either because I won't ever be that frivolous with my money and it's practically impossible to own one as a normal car because they attract more attention than heat attracts flies.

That and a mk5 R32. They're faster than the 4, have a better chassis and they're newer, but I just prefer the 4! :D

that's exactly how I felt in Dubai........one of possibly only 2 x 3 doors MkIV's in the country there (the other a crappy US import, which I drove when 4 sale and mine which was bought new by a Scotsman in Germany for his wife, it had a year in Milan-Italy, was shipped to Muscat-Oman and I bought it in Dubai with 110k klms on as the boot looked new and he had just replaced it with a Mk V Tournado Red GTi)

....it was a lucky find on Expatwoman.com and I had no idea of it's rarity until after I bought it.....everyone had new MkV's which cost 5 to 6 times what I paid for my 7 year old Mk IV...but which one looked better, you be the judge:

KTM X-bow for the raw 300HP Go Kart. Will never own it becasue it costs way too much for me to consider practical and it has no windscreen/roof.
http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2009/07/25/ktm-xbow-by-abt_3xYfg_5965.jpg

Zenvo ST1. Styling wise this car blows everything else waway plus it has an uprated 7L V8 putting out 1104BHP :P. However they only made 100 or so of them and pre-selected the owners themselves.

Shelby Mustang 500GT (Eleanor) becasue it is just a beautiful piece of machinery, yet i don't even know if we can get them here, plus fuel is going to be a killer lol.

Pikes Peak Ford Fiesta because 800HP in a 2L 4Cyl would blast anything away at the start/turns. However it was custom built for the Pikes Peak race so we will never see it.

^^ I was more thinking cars you'd never own because of stigma etc associated with them - not ones we simply admire but are plain out of reach for most of us i.e. Lamborghinis, Enzos etc.

Some interesting choices early on though. Citroens?! You guys are nuts lol

can I generalise and say anything the italians have built or designed... I'd worked for Alfa Romeo a few years back, some gorgeous cars (i really wanted the 156 GTA), engine note to die for, drive very nice, but once they're due for a major service (60,000km), run, run far away. Which is about the time they won't start, the selespeed won't work and paint will be faded.

Any Jap ricer ... ie Supra, Evo, Subaru, GT-R .... admire the engineering hate the image.

Any Australian built performance car ... admire SOME of the engineering hate the image ... and resale ...

Most current BMW / Audi / Mercedes products as they come in auto only ....

No Ferrari ... I'd trade my wife for 1 but it would break down .... :frown:

No Porsche ... again admire the engineering hate the image. Too many bought for show and NOT properly used .....

And the car I currently would like to have most of all ... BMW 135i Coupe in manual with BMW Motorsport kit .... because it only has 4 seats. :bangheadwall: Its spirit reminds me of a 2002 / E30 M3 and even a E36 M3.

BMW E36 M3 - Had a E36 for the past 6 years and always believed i would upgrade to one.. Now many of the examples for sale are 100-150km's+ and too expensive to maintain - Vannos failure too

BMW 330ci - nice all round car, just found the interiors "worn" alot, hate the woodgrain ($1100 just for the silver trim!) plus no warranty left. Also would have spent a bucket load on mods (was itchy for a s/c kit)

R34 GTR - great engine the 26dett but the insurance and everyone wanting to race you from the lights would get old

2005 wrx STI - Best shape IMO, the interiors just killed it for me - again boy racer image

Mazda RX8 - love the look, but worried about apex failure above 100km's

350Z - would have meant i would have had to cut back on other leisure items and dented the house deposit fund

All 6 above cars were on the checklist when sourcing a new car last December.. ended up with my MKV R32 :)

Hmmmm theres many cars which i lust over that i would not purchased mainly based on the merits of pricing and practicality.

In no specific order;

-Aston Martin DB9/Maserati Grandsport (Too Poor but if i were which these would be the ultimate grand tourer)
-Ferrari F430/Lambo Gallardo (Too Poor, and prone to catching on fire)
-Nissan 350z/370z (Massive blind spots, but love the overall styling)
-Mazda RX-7 (Series 6/8) (Rotary engine requires constant maintenance rebuids)
-BMW M3 (expensive....LOL)
-Nissan GTR (Expensive, and can't use launch control, voids warranty)
-Audi TT/TTS (Abit too dear, but is currently in my sights despite possibly being labelled a hairdresser)
-BMW 135i (This car i was considering, as a viable purchase BUT can't warm up to the styling. The Side profile is especially ugly, i hate Bangle. Performance/Price can't be disputed. It's a baby M3)
-Nissan 200SX (Very outdated interior, but driving dynamics and body shape are alluring)
-Lotus Elise (Practicality.....there is none)
-Ford XR6Turbo (too big, but good bang for buck)

My list goes:
-R32 GTR: Almost all would be thrashed, tough cars but I wouldn't want to foot the bill if the engine/gbox died. They have such a tough image though, I don't ever think I've seen a tosser driving one either; in stark contrast to every other skyline driver out there. Who knows, I might even get one one day (probably not, nice to think though.)

-WRX: Would be a good drive but again a lot are thrashed and a lot of tossers seem to drive them, maybe that's just because they are a frequent sight on the road.

-E30 M3: I would love one but I will probably will never be in the position to own one.

-Series 5 RX7: I love the shape, the sound, the speed and the feeling of them. I'm a big fan of high revving engines and these just sound so hot.

-S13: I love the look when they have std option aero with factory two-tone paint, wide and low-offset period-correct wheels and are on their guts. I don't know I'd own one though.

Most of these cars are ruled out either by their maintenance prices or image factors. I would consider them for a second car or project but would never drive one everyday.

I think you have been grossly misinformed. Like any other car out there if you look after them and keep up regular maintenance they can be quite reliable cars.
