My car wasn't going in gear properly today...I Believe my clutch may be due for replacement, is there a choice in available clutches? Any recomendations? Also, is there anything else that should be changed whilst the work is being done? Anyone had this done recently? what kinda $$$..

Cheers

I wouldn't be so keen to pull the box off before confirming it not the cable or something else external.

What distance has the car done?

Even with heavy traffic use I would expect a std one to last way over 100000Ks.

I'd call in somewhere that knows VWs and get it assessed. Ifit does prove to be a duffer, a new clutch should be less than 250 plus labour.

I drive the hell outta my car, 35-40000kms a year. It's got 224,000 at the moment and I bought it at 135,000, i haven't put a clutch in it yet. I thought it may be the clutch because, with the engine off the gear engages no problems also when changing from 4th to 5th I dont seem to get any issues, I'm gusessing because the engine speed is a good match for the gear change. Regardless I'll check all the external stuff, right now!!

Thanks

$900 installed or price alone?

I have a brand new self retracting clutch cable for a mk3 2.0L...

Paid $110 for it, sell for $50

$900 sheesh, I know the mark-up on clutches is pretty fierce, Of course it's a long weekend so I won't know till monday but I hope it will be a lot less than that, I have a source!

Is there any benefit in changing the cable if it is undamaged?

Regardless this whole thing sh*ts me big time cause the money could be put to much better use (new front shocks & control arm bushes come to mind.)

Has the box got oil in it?

Even with that mileage on the clutch itself could be OK. The 2 litre motor isn't a beast power wise. If it's not slipping then I would deffo be looking elsewhere first. Even the linkages could have worn out of adjustment.

Hi
Not long ago I replaced my one by myself so labour didnt cost me any $$$.
I got it complete kit for around $280 genuine LUK, same as my clutch from the car.
Labour shouldnt be more then $250-300.
That how much they charge here in Sydney (west).
If interested in clutch let me know so I can try to get one on monday.

This is what I love about this forum, the MK3 one especially...everyone is so quick to offer advice and assistance..I'm gonna have to play it by ear till monday at least, I just drove for half an hour and it only balked a couple of times. It's bareable, just another excuse to keep my wife away from my golf and in her Polo :-) . I've just started using KMJ automotive up here in Brisbane so I might drop by and see Markus on Monday. Hope every is enjoying the holiday..(i write this from work btw)..

cheers

Well when i changed mine at 134k it cost $298 for the clutch kit and then another $250 for the labour, that was at midas though you could probably gte it cheaper at a VW specialist...
