hi All.

Just thought I'd start up a new thread for a new project of mine,.

I bought another mk 1, the Viper green one that was for sale the other week (hence the project name, yes I know, it's lame,.)

The plan for this car, is to have it as a dedicated beater. it'll see a few different events (motorkhanas and sprints mainly) and probably a few different drivers too. It'll be on club rego, so i can drive it too and from the track. currently has a strong 1600 which will remain with the 4 speed, it'll cop some bigger/better brakes, and reset/lowered springs as well as some home made sway/stress bars etc. I don't plan on spending too much on this project, most of the bits will be 2nd hand or recycled in some way, (except for certain things which are consumables, and need to be replaced with new bits obviously)

body wise, it'll be standard, maybe loose the bumpers for weight, there's a bit of rust that needs to be repaired, but I wont be painting this one! (yea, i say that now) Interior will be semi stripped, probably with a harness and bucket seats. I havn't thought long and hard about budget, but I'm aiming at about $1000 all up.

overall. the goal is a to have a bit of good cheap fun. it's meant to be a summer project, but with any luck it'll be ready in one form or another for DOVW.

any questions fire away.

you do know that if you want to compete in motorkhanas you need to leave the bumpers on. you need to have the original silhouette of the car. just pointing out in case you didnt know.
cheers. Tim

Ah right, I didn't know this, thanks for the heads up.

do you know the reason why?

i think its just to make it fair for everyone else. if you dont keep the original silhouette you will be put in the special class. i know this applies for SA not sure about victoria. i only know this because dad is right into motorkhanas.
cheers. Tim

Sell me those bumpers, Jarred! :p You can have my plastic ones!

Should be good fun...though I bought my mk1 for fun and now I'm doing my best to not make it an obsession!

Ah right, I didn't know this, thanks for the heads up.

do you know the reason why? Like Golfer says. If you're competing against another MK1 and yours is a couple of inches shorter you've got an advantage. It's about clearance in motorkhana.

If you're keen to start off in motorsport I'd recommend the non speed events like 'khanas first. The skills will come in handy later on when you hit the fast track.

It's a lot cheaper for entry fee, licences, safety equipment, wear and tear etc. Once you're up and running you can upgrade everything along the way. You'll get more racetime for less $$$.

There's a list of the Group 5 non speed events for this year over at http://www.piarc.com.au/?item=13696

Thanks Pete. Those reasons are basically why I got this car, and why I want to get out and start doing some events. I just want to have some fun with it! :D

just looking through those dates I *might* be able to make the november date, otherwise, or regardless, I'll have a crack next year!

yes, viper green is the orig, and standard colour. the floors show off best how the colour would have come out of the factory.

there's no signs of rust at all so far on the floors,. but regardless i'm not too worried if there's a bit there. cut it out and fix it if there is. not that hard.

Turns out there's too much rust.

took the carbon canister off today, and found a couple of holes going into the rain tray. Looks like it's the end of the road for this shell unfortuntaly.

anyone need a parts car? PM please.

Unlucky Jarred.

Hopefully you will get some money out of it from parts.

Shame it's too far gone. What year is it? I'm after one or two parts that seem specific to a '76.

78, sorry, and i'd prefer to sell it as one. it's got a good strong engine, rebuilt at some point. I'm keeping the bars though.

When I saw the title of the thread I was hoping you'd be putting the 8.0L V10 from a Viper into a Mk1 .... Disappointed.
