View Full Version : New Vehicle Tracking in Transit

If you are waiting on a new car and want to track its progress to Australia you can do so by using the links below.

First of all you need the VIN of your car, so depending on your relationship with your dealer you might have to play nice, haha. Once you have the VIN you simply copy and paste the full 17 characters into the "Cargo ID" field on the Wallenius Wilhemsen (WW) tracking site.

Generally speaking, the car won't show up on the tracking site until a few days after it has been built. Once you're in you'll get a rough itinerary of the vessel's voyage, which can be accessed by clicking on the "Voyage Number". You can also do few other nerdy things by going back to the first link (below) and searching by "Bill of Lading" or "Booking Number" - by doing this you should be able to see the VINs of the other cars on the boat (although, usually this will be limited to all cars of the same manufacturer - Volkswagen, Audi etc).

WW tracking:
http://schedule.2wglobal.com/AppTracking/cargoTrack.do

From the WW site you will also get the name of the boat your car is on. The WW site only updates itself after the vessel has left each stop. So, if you want to keep a closer eye on the boat you should be able to do so using the links below. In my experience they don't always update reliably, but when they do, you can get real time stats and progress, pretty damn cool!

http://aprs.fi/
http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/

This is all fresh in my mind as I have just been through the waiting process with my S3. If you're a real nutjob, like me, you will make the time to go to the port on the day your boat arrives and your car is being unloaded. Then, if you're timing is spot on you might be lucky enough to see something like this (http://www.liam27.com/audi/S3-arrives-01.jpg)!

Have fun!

Thanks for this...

Tried today and it says my car has been loaded on the vessel :)

On board the TAMESIS (EF931-TAM) it is scheduled to arrive in Brisbane on the 28/9/09.

So my car has been built. Seems so hard to believe it all happened since ordering in May.

Didn't realise it would go so many places before getting here. Here's the itinerary of the vessel.

BREMERHAVEN GERMANY 13/08/2009 15/08/2009
SOUTHAMPTON UNITED KINGDOM 17/08/2009 17/08/2009
LE HAVRE FRANCE 18/08/2009 18/08/2009
ZEEBRUGGE BELGIUM 19/08/2009 19/08/2009
BALTIMORE, MD U.S.A. 28/08/2009 29/08/2009
SAVANNAH, GA U.S.A. 31/08/2009 31/08/2009

EDIT: http://aprs.fi/?call=257565000&mt=m&z=9&timerange=43200 ----That tracking thing is so bloody awesome it's not FUNNY!!!! The Tamesis' callsign is LAOL5 (MMSI NUMBER: 257565000) and you can see where it is right now!! Amazing!

http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/shipposition.phtml?call=LAOL5

Here is a new and better site for ship tracking: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?oldmmsi=257565000&zoom=10&olddate=8/20/2009%208:40:37%20AM

EDIT: 18/9/2009 - I think I've taken tracking your car to a new level of nerdiness by looking for the Tamesis vessel carrying my car on publicly available webcams! I succeeded in watching it leave Southampton this morning at 8:15am or so local time and then enter Le Havre harbour at 2:49 pm local time. Here are some pictures (and I'm hoping to continue watching the ship along its journey)...

Here in Southampton:
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/TamesisSouthampton-1.jpg

I've put a red arrow at where the front is. It was more obvious in motion but also dark. The angle of view of the webcam is shown in the Google graphic and the position of the Tamesis also indicated.

And more impressively on a user controllable webcam at Le Havre (very cool). First shot we see the tug ship going out to greet the Tamesis (the red ship)...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/TamesisLeHavre2-1.jpg

then as it crosses the main part of the harbour/bay...
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/TamesisLeHavre6-1.jpg

and as it goes towards the dock into the distance... I got the Le Havre welcome centre into the shot :)
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/TamesisLeHavre11-1.jpg

There are more intermediate shots, but these show the idea well. Now I know the ship definitely exists..... :D

EDIT 19/8/2009: The webcam at Zeebrugge updates every 5 mins and unfortunately the Tamesis passed by without being caught by the camera. Here's the URL for anyone in future who might have their boat going through this port: http://www.meteo.be/meteo/view/en/1586641-Webcam+Zeebruges.html

Next stop is Baltimore so I'll be trying to get some pics from there when it arrives on the 28/9/09.

EDIT: 6/9/2009: Well the Tamesis was somewhat delayed going through the Panama Canal. I had setup some automatic captures for the webcams there and last night the Tamesis went through the first of the locks (called Gatun) and I was awake to make sure everything went well. I went to bed at 11:45 PM. The camera I had set up for the Miraflores locks had been working perfectly for 48 hours already so had a mass of footage. It would take the Tamesis 8 hours or so to get to the other locks.

As it turned out I slept in for Father's day and my two boys came and greeted me in bed. It was 9:00 AM and we slowly went downstairs and to my horror, and proving Murphy's Law the auto setup had quit working 8 hours before, only minutes after I went to bed. So I don't have the transit through the Miraflores locks, and that would have been the more impressive of the videos!

Anyway, it's on its way now to Papeete.

Here is the video of the Tamesis transiting the Gatun Locks in case anyone is interested...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQEA3DaouyY

Here are some static images:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/ishot2166-1.jpg

You can see the end of the writing "TAMESIS" there.

And finally the low resolution camera:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/ishot895-1.jpg

Enjoy... especially those who also have their car on this ship (I know there's at least one other person - but his is an Audi ;)

Interested in whether it is only Passats & european models that can be tracked via the Wilhelmsem system.

I have ordered a new beetle - and have the VIN# - will it show up or do the beetles get carried by another carrier?

My VIN doesn't show up when I enter it on the website that Lima has linked, so does this mean I should be searching another shipping company - would Patricks be the site I need to access?

I have now received three different delivery dates from the dealer, each extending longer, and I'm feeling a little bit like - hey - where's my car?

Would really like some advice on finding out where it is with the tracking stuff.
Thanks for any advice you may be able to offer

You might want to check your VIN with your dealer - sometimes they get it wrong. AFAIK the Wilhemlson (sp?) site does all Oz bound VWs and Skodas at least (I was able to track both mine, but they were both built in Europe).

Thanks mate.

I'll do an update in the post above in the next day or so. Hopefully it wiil all work out. The ship seems to be approaching the Panama Canal now and is due to dock in Panama city and leave again sometime in the next 20 hours.

I understand now what you mean by 'when it works' in terms of the shipping tracking system.

Apparently it relies on the efforts of volunteer/enthusiasts who install AIS receivers and transmit that data to those web sites. The ship went missing obviously over the Atlantic ocean; and briefly came up at Baltimore, then went dead again from Chesapeake bay onwards. Nothing at all since.

I've just got the schedule to go on now.

Well the Tamesis was moored for most of the day. The port of "Manzanillo" in Panama is not easy to tell where it is. I think the word in Spanish means something along the lines of 'ill defined' or maybe 'flexible location' - so the docking can happen in any number of port areas perhaps. Not sure, but it was moored at Coco Solo for about 7 hours before setting out later than scheduled - on the 5th September 3:30am Panama local time (about one hour ago from our time which is currently 7:30 pm).

So the next port is Papeete on the 16/9/09 which leaves only 12 days from then until docking in Brisbane.

The time passes surprisingly quickly.

Hi - Did you end up locating your car? I am having a similar "challenge" with my R36.

I couldn't get the VIN. I got the name of the ship my car is on (Toreador, MMSI Number: 235068882, IMO Number: 9375288, Callsign: 2BSG3). It just left Durban and is due in Sydney around 30 Sept. Because I can't get into the Wallenius Wilhelmsen website I can't get the actual itinerary, but at least I can track the ship from port to port.

So the Toreador and Tamesis will be arriving in Oz around the same time. Lots of Skodas and VWs.

davidh
15-09-2009, 12:38 AM
Actually, the Toreador is due to arrive in Fremantle on 27th Sept, and Port Kembla on 4th Oct. I don't know how Skoda handle the cargo processing. If they drop my car off in Fremantle rather than process through NSW, I will be ecstatic. It means they would come close to meeting their 12 week estimate for custom build.

My wife's Golf is on the Oberon, due Port Kembla Monday. Ship schedules are available at http://schedule.2wglobal.com/AppSchedules/ Just search by ship name. That's how I found it is 4 days late:frown:. I missed the Panama canal transit, but I sometimes watch the ships passing through. I will be watching http://marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?MMSI=266283000 to track the Oberon into Brisbane. Any webcams in Brisbane's docks?

The Tamesis arrived in Brisbane on the 28th of September.

I got this picture of it from Pinkenba on the 29th, 5 days ago; a few hours before it was scheduled to leave.

Didn't see my car, but it's there somewhere behind :)

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/10/P1010465-2.jpg

The good news for me is that I sold my Accord Euro yesterday for a decent sum privately. $4500 more than what the dealer was offering as a trade in so it suited me. The second person to see it bought it. They'd looked at a few other cars and thought mine was the best of the lot.

So I'm now looking forward to getting the Passat even more. Went to the dealers yesterday to provide some paperwork etc. and saw a beautiful black R36 sedan demonstrator/manager's car there.

I'm hoping the car will be released in the next week (if not already) and I'll have it probably in two weekend's time. I've given them special instructions to not buff or detail the paintwork in any way. Far too many times, the paintwork is ruined at delivery.

I would be careful to ensure that by doing this Luminary that you are able to check the car for scratches if they have not taken off the pre-delivery coating. I am not sure what they use but my car seemed to have a fine coat of something over it that was left in small places that didn't show up until I did the Zaino bit.

We are looking forward to the pics... you have surely made this an event for us all to follow!!

Maybe someone else can set something like that up. It's certainly a good idea :) I'm unfortunately too busy to really do it for anything but amusement. It was a fun way of passing the time.

I picked up the car today and it's pretty nice. A bit disappointed that everything in the MY10 appears exactly like the MY09 - but that wasn't too unexpected :)

The BIG disappointment is the manuals!! They absolutely suck. For one thing the number of options not available here are very sobering. Side/lane assist amongst many others. The other thing is that with the R36 seemingly the flagship model; it's not clear what is and isn't included!

I read one thing highly excited and then realise it's not in the R36. The biggest disappointment in this department was the KESSY - keyless entry system!

But it's all about the car... and I must say everything went smoothly with the delivery. They were tight with any extra goodies, even a hint about an umbrella wasn't enough to score me one. I wasn't in the mood to scrounge for one as it can't be more than a few tens of dollars.

The colour choice was good. They had a silver there too, and it looked ordinary in comparison. The white brings out the silver and chrome highlights more; and contrasts nicely with dark tinted windows. The best colour I have seen is the black though... the speckled grey and blue flecks in the metallic paint are pretty awesome; but I've had my one black car. Pity I didn't wait till the R36 to waste my opportunity at black - but in any case the white is pretty nice too.

I couldn't help launching it mildly at the lights. It left everyone far far behind in a hurry. A real buzz.

One thing I have really appreciatied that I don't remember on the test drive is the DIGITAL SPEEDO readout in the MFD. I have set that as the default display as it's nice to see the exact speed.

Pretty tired, and I didn't get any photos!! So I'll get some tomorrow or on the weekend and start a new thread if that's acceptable.

Hi all,

Is anyone aware if the WWL tracking system still works with the VIN? I've got the ETA data from my friendly dealer, which indicates that the car should have arrived at the port of shipment a couple of days ago, however using the search feature described on this thread doesn't seem to provide any results.

Has anyone had any luck in the last few months using the VIN in the Cargo ID field here (https://www.2wglobal.com/webapps?url=https%3A%2F%2Fatt.2wglobal.com%2Fgstat tweb%2Focean.do%3Fmethod%3DgetDefaultOceanQuickSea rchPage)?

Yes mine was built 29th Jan, but only appeared on the weekend. Turns out it has been sitting at the dock since 5th of Feb and was booked in around then, it just didn't show up until it about to get loaded on. The Otello left Bremen a day or so ago, is picking mine up in Belgium and then heading to the lower point of Sth Africa to pick up Golfs I guess. So if you have a german built car, it's either just been loaded or missed the boat.

I have a Skoda coming so these days they seem to load them in Belgium about 1 or 2 stops after the initial loading at Bremen. The Otello is also running to reunion island after Africa before heading to Freo and then Melb, Sydney. About 6wks by the time it docks for me in Melb.

I should say if you aren't seeing anything and it was a German build, odds are its going to get the next ship as they tend to show up if they are actually on a boat, if not just before. I'd say mine missed the prior boat as it was the only one arriving there on the 5th Feb, the rest of its buddies only got there last week.

Thanks for the update - my schedule from NADCON indicates it's leaving Zeebrugge port on 03/03, which correlates with Willanius Wilhelmsen's Titania, so I expect it will be on that ship. I was just surprised that it hadn't appeared on their tracking system yet.

Mine left Zeebrugge as well, which means it cuts a few days off, they used to go from the Bremen spot. Mine seems to have sat there for about 20 days before it actually got on a ship and it was the only one there for ages so something must have happened. I know mine was delayed in production for 2 weeks, but otherwise it is fine, I wanted it to come in around late April so suits me.

I'm usually the one making those jokes, but when its actually you, I imagine the hail storm damage or repair they had to do which delayed it making a ship.....somethings you are better off not knowing. One of my current cars I'm very suss has had something happen to it in the dealer holding yard before I bought it....it has had some very strange things happen since the day I picked it up.

what direction would a new Golf R come into Oz from?

I assume Perth/Fremantle would be the first stop, then eastern states?

I'm having trouble sealing up a deal for a new 7R & the salesman is telling me there are none in my spec in WA & they would have to charge me road freight to get one from over east.

this is weird because last week he told me there are some to my spec on the water to be delivered in WA in 4 weeks..

I was told by my dealer when I ordered the Passat back in 2012, that it maybe possible get a car off the boat if the swap has been done in time with another dealer or it is an unallocated vehicle AND they can get it off the boat easily ie: not the car right at the back corner and they would have to move all the other cars to get to.

You can always ask to see the invoice from the road freight company if you think your dealer is trying to shaft you.

You can also try another dealer to confirm if your proposed car is on the water headed for Fremantle.

I was told all kinds of rubbish by Trivets Skoda in Sydney. In the end they told me there were too many Skodas in Australia and the importer wasn't accepting orders so I had to choose one from their current stock. This was after I had driven from Canberra to Sydney with the cash in my pocket for the deposit. I had no other purpose for the trip and I had spoken to them prior to leaving Canberra and they knew exactly the purpose of my trip.

I was pretty well fuming after that and vented on any public website I could find. Not long after, I received a call from Kinghorn Skoda in Nowra. The sales guy Ryan couldn't have been more helpful. I think I had commented something on their website (not against them though). He asked what I wanted, he told me they could do it, I drove down the same day and paid the deposit. He was a little surprised at how easy the sale was for him. I knew exactly what I wanted, I didn't need a test drive or anything, he didn't need to sell me anything, just take my money.

At the time the wheels I wanted were over a $1700 option in Australia but only 8 pounds in the UK. I had already found out it was because Australia couldn't option them on the vehicle so they had to order a full set of wheels in the style I wanted and then swap them over. Obviously the dealer would usually end up with a spare set of wheels. I asked about them as I was getting mine made to order, could I have those wheels. The order didn't have it listed as an option but they added a note on the bottom and what do you know, my vehicle turned up with the wheels I wanted.

Don't take crap from dealers.
