hey - i e-mailed one of those companies in hong kong - they wanted 129 USD for the grille set plus 20 USD for the armrest which i was happy with - but then shipping for it all came to 200 USD to South Africa - so i decided against getting it because id still pay Vat plus duties and also a forwarding and handling charge on top of that - it was around three times in total of the original amount in USD so not worth the price

so i very much doubt that the free shipping would operate if they are sending it out of mainstream china - plus the shipping would be horrendous - so double check on that

This is the wrong part.
There is a similar part on the site, but it has an hollowed out right section for the stock intercooler.
that one is $189 US.

T Go is right, if you look at my pic below you can see the mesh is "open" on the driver side fog panel to allow for the air to flow to the SMIC. There are two types of lower mesh kits you can get, if you have a GTI you want the open one ... or save some money and manually cut the mesh :bangheadwall:

I know the "Sporty" ones are different, as I have on my car the ones with the big cut-out.

I was pointing to them because they are cheaper - and for those with a FMIC or a non-gti, for example, it might be a better deal. ;)

Hey guys, the honeycomb grills from vaglink and any other products have free shipping until September. I emailed them last night and got their reply this morning. So I rekon if people are wanting the grills then best time would be now I guess. I'm thinking of getting the $129.99USD one as I have the FMIC.

Just ordered myself one too (the one with no SMIC hole) so all up cost me around $160 AUD as free shipping. But waiting for them to refund 5% as they have a promotion on whereby you get 5% off purchase if you have an ebay ID.

Can't wait to get it. Will complete the exterior look. Just hope it doesn't get lost or damaged in the post as it will be a pain.

Cheers, think I'll be in as well (nothing like a forum full of identical mods). $145 after 5% refund works out pretty cheap for the non ventilation version.

Are these easy to install?

depends if you are willing to distroy the old ones if you are it's easy, if you're not you'll have to remove the whole front bumper which isn't really hard just annoying

DeanB

The fog light ones pull straight out, though the drivers side has a screw to undo first !

The middle one is easy with a set of snips ... cut through it in the middle so it flexes more and it pops straight out !! New one just clicks straight in - easy !

It would be interesting to see if these ones have the part number left on them, as the ones I've ordered from vagteam had the part number "erased".

So, as I've provided the part numbers, i expect 10% royalties off each grill imported direct from VW / VAG.

Hope i don't start seeing too many around tho. Can probably get the part # off the side pieces too if anyone is interested (I got the non ventilation version and will self-ventilate (hack).

Don't know mate, could be a browser issue.

I got the cheap one, used a Dremel equivalent to open up the drivers side for ventilation to the SMIC.

Grafted the old air scoop onto the new one.

Money well spent.

Drivers side has a screw to the center side of the fog light. Screw was not in contact with the grill on mine, so both came out with light pulling.

Should not have to pull with much force, check for screws (would be visible from the front) before having another go.

Finally got mine installed. Surprisingly, it didn't take me any longer than 3 mins to install. Pulled the side grills out, one with a screw, and the centre one needed a bit of convincing but managed to get it out with not too much damage to the original centre grill. Must say though, these honeycomb ones are built stronger than the factory ones particularly the centre grill. Now it looks more like the mini version of the golf gti. LOL

Yeah, many a person has called my car a Golf by mistake and now its even more similar.

I had to butcher the cr*p out of the middle section to get it out... Sides were easy after some ventilation customizing.

Gti Dave
29-08-2009, 05:55 PM
Yeah, the funny things is the Golf seems to be engraved into people's heads cause 9/10 times whenever I'm getting something to suit the polo, I have to keep reminding them its a polo not a golf (in case they order in the wrong thing and ends up wasting everyone's time etc).

noone
29-08-2009, 08:09 PM
Me too... But for the extra $60ish, I could not justify it to myself. The one I got required the ventilation holes to be cut out, so if you plan on keeping the SMIC, the more expensive one is a better choice.

Also the free freight I think ends tomorrow, so it will become a lot more expensive.

I tried again, on the driver side, i only able to pull the right side of the cover out, but i cant pull the left side...

then i tried to push it back in, but then i cant:eek::eek:

Now i got stuck, the cover is half out half in...

Can anyone give me an idea what is going on...

I really dont want to force it... I already tried a couple of big bang to get it back in but no sucess....

Might visit vw dealer and see what is going on...

Do you guys think the best way to remove the lower grills without breaking any clips is to remove the front bumper?

DeanB
14-09-2009, 11:32 AM
The fog light ones are just pull out (remove one screw on the drivers side) they are fairly simple and best to pull near the fogs first I found as they unclip easy.

The lower middle piece I attempted to do the same with no luck and used a pair of wire cutters to hack some of it so it had more flex and then it popped out. The new one clicked in very easy ... assume it would be a nightmare to remove as well once in.

If you need to keep the centre piece, then maybe you will have to. if you can get under the car, you should have reasonable visibility.

If you don't need the old one, butcher it!

if you have the one with the holes, graft (glue or something) it onto the back of the new unit. It helps push air to the SMIC (assuming you don't have a FMIC)

DeanB
14-10-2009, 07:24 PM
I attached the funnel with 2 holes drilled in it and 2 holes into the bumper recess and used nuts/bolts .. so it's fixed to the bumper now, not to the fog light grill.
