Hi all,
Going and having a look at a vr6 and i have found and im not to sure on the odometer readings.
My question is how hard is it for someone to fake the readings? car looks like its in good condition and the price is alright. Also doesnt come with log books so i dunno... lol
input would be great

you just need to buy one from the wreckers with low k's and put it in and it shows the readings from the new dash

Ahh gay as, the vr6 is a 96 model with under 100k so they must have put a new dash in it.. gay

if its a car with that few kms it would usually be accompanied by a service history. Thats how you tell. Have a read through the book/receipts and make sure it is stamped on dates that add up. Make sure it doesnt have huge gaps in it either that may indicated it has been damaged & repaired.

Ignore the speedo, check for wear in certain places which would indicate high mileage.
Drivers side seat bolster.
Steering wheel for shininess.
Gearstick and handbrake for the same.
Switches for faded symbols.
Pedal rubber wear.
All of the above give a good indication of whether the under 100k reading is accurate.
If all of the above look in good nick and not seriously worn, then the mileage may be legitimate.

Hmm it doesnt come with log books or anything, im going to go have a look at it and pay real close attention to the dash.
Looks like it has a aftermarket gearstick, but apart from that everything else looks stock.

Don't forget, those parts can be easily replaced/fixed though!

It can be but rarely is. I mean it isn't that easy to find a replacement drivers seat, or steering wheel.
Also rarely do they change the pedal rubbers.
I mean your right it can happen, but most don't go that far to hide it.
Regardless if the mileage cannot be substantiated with log books, then really it shouldn't be used to value the car. In other words it should be ignored...Value it as if it had an unconfirmed mileage...say average for its age.

Yeah, i will just check it for general wear and tear. It should provide a good indication of the km's

Thats all you can do buddy, you can even get a fake log book all stamped up if you really wanted..I normally ignore k'S on an older car and guestimate its wear and usage based on the tell tale signs, as mentioned above.

To be honest I can easily believe low K's on a VR6. To fake it you would have to take out the cluster and replace it, and the VR6 clusters are different to 2.0. So dunno how many there are of those around, but yeah someone would have to really wanna con you to do it I reckon.
Theres also plenty of low mileage mk3s around, I found a 3 door on carsales the other day with under 50k.

There's is/was a couple of mrk 3 cl/gl's with under 100k. Quiet a regular thing, as the market they can attract. This is assuming its the original owner.

Not sure if anyone cares or anything but i went and had a look at the vr6, looked good on the outside but drivers seat was in a fairly bad condition and had seen alot betters days.
Had a quick search in the car and found log books.... last service last year had the odometer at 320,000km and it sounded like the timing chain was about to come loose.
Thanks for all the reply's guys again much appreciated

Asked the auction house what they where chasing for it and they said around $7500 i lolled and walked away

I paid 6500 for mine with 71,000km on it and probably in not as nice condition. Thats a great price if you can get rego and auction fees thrown in!!!
People are willing to pay 10k for a nice VR6, they are a relatively desirable car.

Another way to find out is to ring the rta (or equivalent) and ask em what k's it has done. I know in nsw when they update the rego each year the k's is recorded on the pink slip and then sent to the rta.

I wish that was around when I was looking for my car. Because I am impatient I bought an Auto VR6 for $8900. I would have killed for a manual in that condition at that price.

Is it just me or is that thing running extremely high ride height and some gnarly positive camber on the front wheels?
Almost looks like the engine isn't in there : )
That white gauge cluster is aftermarket, which would explain the dodgey kilometre reading.
In the ad it states :Odometer: 67,692 kms. showing on Odometer" - 'showing' being the operative word, and they know it.

Lol I think it's just you mate! That's how the stock springs sit if they aren't sagged, or if they've been replaced. And it doesn't look like there's any camber there...

hmm there are ones on carpoint for around 8k in alot better condition than that one, but im now starting to think a v5 might be a better option for me

Haha ok... totally off topic here, but...
Could be just a lens that gives everything a bowed look when it's at a wide focal length, but take a look - the top part of the front wheels sort of look like they're poking out more than the bottom part.
: )
Like this but less exaggerated:

Oh my bad I didn't realise you were saying POSITIVE camber. Yeah there is a bit there, but my car had it when I had stock suspension so I'm assuming that's just stock.

Nah - totally not stock.
The VR6 actually always had slightly lowered springs as factory. (Probably not by the standards of anyone here tho : )
Looks like some dodge springs were used, or they aren't seated properly.

Hmm that's a bit odd then :???: that looks like normal VR6 height to me, cos it was the same as mine and many others i've seen.
