View Full Version : Starter motor Problem
Hey Fella's,
im pretty new to this VW game.. I picked up a 1995 VR6 (Auto - 95k) a few month's back, it was running pretty good until last saturday! Jumped in the car, went to start it ..NO GOOD!! I think the starter motor has had it?
So i thought i'd jump on here and ask some of the local's for a little help with this.
Any idea's on where i could get a starter motor from or of a pretty good workshop i could take the car? Im currently living in Balmoral (Brisbane) ..so yeah, any help would be great.
Cheers Guys

Did you check the battery? If not turn the interior light on and check if it doesn’t dim while you cranking. If the light goes off it is most likely depleted or dead battery. Also check the battery terminals if they’re not loose or corroded.
Hey mate,
i will check it when i get home today, im pretty sure the battery is ok though. When i purchased the car, it had a new battery put in..but you never know?
Cheers for the advise.

Well the battery was either ''new'' to you but not to them, or you haven't turned the car on in a while...I'm guessing a if anything?
Either that or it's not the battery... :???:

You didnt happen to leave the car in reverse now? I know ive done that a few times driving the family car.
Check that there is 12v on the Red/Black wire at the starter when you are trying to crank mate. If no then you may be looking at the ign switch , not uncommon.
Good luck
Jmac
Sorry about the late reply. (Internet is yet to be hooked up at home:mad::mad:)
Cheers for the advise boys .. i will have the starter motor replace this Saturday, fingers crossed this is the problem?
Another thing, is it a pretty simple job changing this? would be keen to do it myself if it is.

From what I remember, it's a bit fiddly. There are three or four rather large (18mm hex head) bolts, including one which has a thread through it for the earth wire that connects to it. The bolts are a bit of a nuisance to get to so make sure you leave your car off for a while so you don't burn yourself!
If you need/want a detailed description I'll poke my head down there when I've got a chance and let you know how it's done.

its uncommon for vw starters to just stop working completely. in order to properly diagnose the problem we need more information - i.e. - what actually happens when you turn the key?
1) when you turn the key, do you hear a "click" from the engine bay?
2) is there just no noise at all?

Hi there,
when i turn the key it makes a noise, kind of hard to explain? It sounds like an electrical sound (Like a free spinning wheel)
When the car broke down, i spoke to the Autotune guy and explained what had happened and what sort of noise it makes and he said it sounds like the Starter motor?

Hey mate,
thanks for the help on this but i think i have it figured out now, had a little play around under the hood and i think i will be ok (Plus my mate is willing to help me out)
Cheers again for the advise and what not. I thinks it time to educate myself a little more on the car.

Haha nice one. No problems dude, and yeah I totally encourage your statement; doing things myself is what gave me the knowledge I have!
